Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Landing in the runner-up position is Disney's Christopher Robin, falling short of expectations, delivering an estimated $25 million from 3,602 locations. While this is an improvement over the $21.5 million debut for 2016's Pete's Dragon, it's not a strong start for the film, though with little competition over the coming weeks and an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences it could hope for some decent legs.

Christopher Robin banned in China due due to sensitivities between Pooh and the President looking similar.

Ridiculous

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

They should just have The Rock do Pooh's voice for that version, then they would release it

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I'm glad to see Mission Impossible still holding on strong.

Was hoping Christopher Robin would have a stronger second week. Although I guess Winnie the Pooh movies have never been huge hits despite the character recognition.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I'm hoping BlacKkKlansman, with its strong PSA and high Cinemascore rating, will turn out to be the big sleeper hit of the summer. I don't see it playing well with the Flyover State crowd, and "urban" (black-perceived) films tend to drop faster. Great movie either way.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Early numbers this weekend:

Crazy Rich Asians plummeted from $26.4m last weekend to $25.5m this weekend, a devastating 4% drop for the movie for a $77.6m domestic gross. /s

There are no real comps for that one. Borat opened in a similar range and was up 6% in it's second weekend, but it also had a limited release it's first weekend and was rated R. Similarly, Wedding Crashers and Hangover were R and had 25% drops their second weekends. Both of those closed well above $200m domestic, as Crazy Rich Asians likely will too (not sure it'll reach Hangover ($277m domestic) or Big Fat Greek ($241m domestic) Wedding levels, but it should be high)

Happytime Murders didn't do so hot and looks to be landing around $10.2m for the weekend, placing third behind The Meg ($11.6m, which would put it at $103m after this weekend).

Industry estimates for the weekend of Aug. 24-26:

thumb rank film dis. screens (chg) fri 3-day (-%) total wk
1 Crazy Rich Asians WB 3,526 (+142) $7M (-4%) $25.5M (-4%) $77.4M 2
2 The Meg WB 4,031 (-87) $3.2M (-44%) $11.6M (-45%) $103.8M 3
3 The Happytime Murders STX 3,256 $3.95M $10.2M $10.2M 1
4 M:I – Fallout Par/Sky 3,052 (-430) $2.2M (-27%) $8.2M (-23%) $194.1M 5
5 Alpha S8/Sony 2,719 $1.6M (-52%) $5.7M (-45%) $20.2M 2
6 Mile 22 STX 3,520 $1.6M (-70%) $5.6M (-59%) $24.7M 2
7 Christopher Robin Dis 3,394 (-208) $1.55M (-42%) $5.5M (-38%) $76.7M 4
8 BlacKkKlansman Foc 1,914 (+126) $1.4M (-29%) $5M (-32%) $31.7M 3
9 slender Man Sony 2,065 (-293) $775K (-45%) $2.5M (-47%) $25.1M 3
10 A.X.L. GR 1,710 $792K $2.35M $2.35M 1

BlacKKKlansman is Spike Lee's 4th highest grossing movie so far, it'll be his 3rd highest grossing after its run (behind 2006's Inside Man and 1992's Malcolm X).

Ant-man and the Wasp should be around $211m domestic after this weekend. It just had a huge $24m Friday in China and will pass the original's worldwide gross next weekend.

Mission Impossible Fallout opens in China next weekend which should boost its worldwide b.o. a substantial bit.

8/26 Estimates

Ant-man and the Wasp blew past Ant-man's worldwide gross this weekend thanks to a strong opening in China.

Crazy Rich Asians didn't hold the early 6% estimate and instead plummeted a devastating 10%. Yeah no, that movie is fucking crushing it.

The Meg is doing very damn well also and has raked in $462m worldwide.

Mission:Impossible Fallout opened at $77.3m in China, a franchise high, and is now at $647m, about $12m shy of Rogue Nation but will a ton of heat behind it still. It should have no problems topping Ghost Protocol as the highest grossing entry worldwide (or Mission Impossible II in the US, it's about $11m shy there).

The Incredibles 2 crossed $600m US, $1.16b+ worldwide, and is the 2nd highest grossing animated feature to date.

Ant-man and the Wasp is now at $594m worldwide, the original pulled $519m at the end of its run.

Wow, Crazy Rich Asians is still going strong. I liked it and all, but I'm really surprised at the strong retention. But I guess at this point in the summer, the competition has been pretty weak for it.

I saw Searching last week and enjoyed it. Impressive debut for being a limited release.

I'm really happy to see Crazy Rich Asians and Searching do well. Even the Netflix movie To All the Boys I've Loved has been getting some love on social media, so a lot of movies with Asian lead actors doing well lately.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Cute, well done live action family movies with animated bears seem to struggle a bit in the US--I blame Ted.

The 66.2% drop for the Nun is the largest second weekend decline in the Conjuring Universe.

Fox surely wanted a bigger opening weekend for the Predator.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

From Box Office Guru:

Crumbling 65% in its sophomore session was last week's top film The Predator with an estimated $8.7M. Fox has taken in $40.4M to date and the final gross should come close to the $52M of 2010's franchise installment Predators which suffered a more terrifying 72% freefall in its second weekend.
Michael Moore, the box office king of documentaries, stumbled with his latest entry Fahrenheit 11/9 which fared poorly on its opening weekend. The R-rated film from new distributor Briarcliff managed to gross only an estimated $3.1M this weekend from 1,719 theaters for a dismal $1,803 average. It was a very wide launch for a doc and reviews were quite positive, but audiences just did not come out for it. Critiquing Trump, the 2016 election and beyond, 11/9 offered much of what has been on the TV news airwaves constantly for the past couple of years so many in the target audience felt it unnecessary to pay to see this on the big screen...
There was plenty of activity below the top ten from wide release flops as well as strong platform debuts. The creator of the TV ratings monster This Is Us found no luck pulling his fan base out to a multiplex as the new film Life Itself was ignored on opening weekend grossing only $2.1M, according to estimates. The R-rated film from Amazon averaged a miserable $805 from 2,609 locations and poor reviews repelled any interested bodies. The teen thriller Assassination Nation bowed to an estimated $1M from 1,403 sites for a horrible $713 average for Neon.
