Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

this week has a lot of well reviewed movies (per RT)
  • 83% Sausage Party
  • 84% Pete's Dragon
  • 87% Florence Foster Jenkins
  • 99% Hell or High Water
  • 86% Blood Father

Pete's Dragon is probably the only one that has a shot of beating SSquad

67% drop for SS isn't horrible but it's not very good.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

So for this upcoming weekend, tracking:

#1. Suicide Squad -- -50% for $20m to $22m
#2. Sausage Party -- -45% for $18.8m

War Dogs $12 - $15m ($40m-ish budget)
Ben-hur $10 - $13m ($100m budget)
Kubo is looking at $13 - $14m

Judging by Tuesday, I think Pete's Dragon will have a very strong hold this weekend.

Posted in the other box office thread, but Suicide Squad has passed the $700M mark worldwide. Not too shabby.

WB is very happy with that number. Hopefully it leads to more supporting DC characters getting their shot in movies.

Coming 2021...Phantom Stranger: The Movie. Or if Snyder gets his way, Batman Vs Phantom Stranger.

How is that a surprise? BW is actually under its projections so is a bit of a disappointment. Good thing it has a low budget.

Snowden has an amazing cast and Bridget Jones is probably the only chick flick out there right now while the horror genre already has a movie out there to take Blair Witch place. Plus, whoever thought Blair Witch would hit $25M must have been smoking a lot of that good stuff. Once the reviews started pouring in, it wasn't a good sign for the movie unlike the last couple horror films that have came out.

Snowden also has shit reviews, which is the death knell for any adult-oriented movie. Unlike fanboys, people over 35 actually care about what the critics think, so no surprise that it landed with a thud. As for Bridget Jones, the writing was on the wall for that one too. The 2nd movie was a shadow of the 1st, and nobody was clamoring for a third one. Blair Witch didn't do great either. I think Lionsgate was expecting much better reviews as it got its world premiere at the prestigious TIFF, but that didn't pan out.

Thing about Bridget Jones, it's already made $29M overseas (and still has many territories to open including the UK) and the budget apparently was $35M.

Great piece on 60 Minutes from Sunday regarding the Chinese Film industry and how the U.S. is catering many movies of their films to appeal to them.

If you have the ability to watch it, try to do so. Very informative.

The New York Times critics, A.O. Scott and Manohla Dargis, did another of their white-guilt dialogue pieces about how movies need to promote equality and diversity and Dargis suggested the issue requires government intervention as if audiences were going to see something because the government said it was good for you. My first thought was, what does the Chinese government think? They have far more sway over what Hollywood makes than the U.S. government.

Snowden's issue is that the story has been told ad nauseum over the past few years on news program after news program and Citizenfour. It's also striking while the iron is lukewarm on the topics pop culture popularity (dumb as that sounds). It opened in line with W.

Bridget Jones domestic openings:
Bridget Jones's Diary: $10.73m, $71.5m total
Bridget Jones Edge of Reason: $8.68m, $40.2m total
Bridget Jones's Baby: $8.57m

roughly in line there too.

I think the only one with a potential "breakout" chance was Blair Witch since horror movies either catch or miss miserably.

Guess I was expecting a bit more with the cast from Snowden. Still a really good movie and worth the watch.

20 28 The Dressmaker BG $365,856 +97.6% 159 +123 $2,301 $630,447 - 2

Hell or High Water did quite well for itself during its run. Tim Burton's latest opened middle of the road but at least it beat its earlier estimates, it doesn't mean much but it does usually bode well for a good hold next weekend. Deepwater Horizon will likely be one of those well liked movies that does extremely well on cable and Netflix, I think it'll actually have pretty decent legs.

Storks held up okay, I thought Mag 7 would hold up a little better.

No Manches Frida has quietly racked up over $10m as well.

Expect fairly substantial drops this weekend with the closures, wreckage and clean up from Matthew in the Southeast.

Looks like the planet is trying to rid the North America of some nasty herpe sores.
