I own this

It was good the first time and even better the second.

It is hard to watch to see him descend into madness but you realize how great Joaquin was when you compare him to Cmom Cmon a completely different character.

De Niro excelled as Murray Franklin. What a prick.

Maybe there could be a sequel but Phoenix does not seem like the guy who wants to be stuck in a franchise.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

I visited my parents this weekend, so it was time to watch another old movie I'd never heard of (but should have):

Battleground (1949) - WW2 movie that follows a company of infantry men in the 101st Airborne during the Battle of the Bulge, as they fight the Germans in the area around the Belgian town of Bastogne. We get to know the characters and their backgrounds and personalities as they leave their base to head into action, dodging mortar shells, digging foxholes, and keeping an eye out for German spies. There's humor and tragedy, and of course, ultimately victory, but not without loss. I was unfamiliar with many of the actors, though apparently Van Johnson was a big star at the time. Ricardo Montalban has a small but significant role, and James Arness has a very small role, too. James Whitmore was quite familiar to me, as he had a long, prolific acting career and I've seen him in many movies and tv shows. He may be best known to many as "Brooks Hatlen" from The Shawshank Redemption (Brooks was the old inmate who got released and hung himself).
I have to imagine this movie was a big influence on many subsequent WW2 films and tv series, including Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. It's definitely worth a watch if you like the genre.

Magnolia (1999)

As divisive as this film is, I appreciate re-visiting it from time to time.

A Shot in the Dark (1935). A generic murder mystery at a college. Everett van Sloan as a professor. I liked it because it used every trope you can think of: "I saw someone enter the murdered man's room -- I'll tell you who it was later," the secret marriage, two unrelated guys who look the same, and a murder disguised as a suicide. I know, but what can I do? There was no bright young lawyer discovering that he was working for an evil law firm in Rosemary's Baby.

The Protector (1985) - I love this Jackie Chan flick even though itís not that popular and the man disowns it too. Gotta love the plenty full-frontal shots of the females too.

Yes, it's an overlooked classic. I would go so far as to say it belongs in the top-20 horror films of the seventies, which puts it in very illustrious company.

Hulu

Pablo turns in a Oscar worthy performance about people living on the margins and makes you appreciate your life more.

HBO

It seemed like nobody liked this or maybe expected something scarier or more Scifi or a thriller since it was adapted from a Stephen King book?

I think I have seen it maybe 3 times.

Hope Davis in 2001 what a smoke show.

RIP Anton Yelchin who was a young kid in this movie.

Sucks there is no blu-ray release.

Don't remember anything about this one, but looking on IMDb, I did rate an 8/10...

Wondering if this is one that could be released under the Warner Archive Collection line.

It was not horrible but not great either but worth watching to look at Haley Lu.

Watched it today, enjoyed it. Some cheesy stuff and the after Carnival scene had me & . My favorite scene was at the end, Explanation of the procedure.

This was in theaters?

Written and directed by Joe David Moore from Avatar.

Meyers had a sick apartment or town house in NY.

First Jacinda Barrett sighting in decades.

Shirley (2020)

Though I'm unfamiliar with the life & work of Shirley Jackson, I enjoyed the performances in the film, especially from Elisabeth Moss.

Not a film that I would re-visit again.

The Sadness (2021)

DiabolikDVD's mini-description on Twitter was a perfect review of this film:

"Imagine 28 Days Later with Dead Alive level gore and a CATIII mean spiritedness. That's The Sadness"

It also forgets to mention that it severely lacks likeable characters.

Though most of this film's traction has been (and will be) on the sheer level of gore and borderline CATIII inspired nonsense.

I watched Chappie last night. I actually enjoyed it up until the last few minutes. I understand that the thematic and tonal shifts could be jarring for some people, though. And I could see the robot being annoying.

2010: The Year We Make Contact. After spending a few moments trying to determine when the movie took place based on the '80s-looking earth tech onscreen (next time, pay attention to the title, right?) I knew that something wonderful was not going to happen. Clarke's weirdly sappy ending was not welcome. 2.7/5

The junkies in Chappie were annoying.

I thought the final minutes were the best and sad too.

Netflix streaming

It was ok though I wanted to love it or maybe be a 3 1/2 or 4 star movie at least.

When Chris Noth was on the screen it was more engaging.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Watched The Invisible Man Appears this morning, Japanís take on the classic character. Could have used a punchier script but the FX were damn good.

Tonight the wife and I watched The Orange Years, documentary about the creation of Nickelodeon. Very good with lots of the old actors reminiscing and some very insightful looks into how they made their own mark on television.
