Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

3 years late, but I watched The 15:17 to Paris on HBO Max tonight. Right now they have a library of Clint Eastwood directed and starring movies.

Wow, this movie was awful. 20-25 minutes of the actual story stretched out to 93 minutes. The whole movie was just poorly structured and the 3 real life guys should not have been cast as the leads. They were not actors at all. I thought even the actual attack sequence didn't work because these guys weren't able to sell the scene and the emotions.

I like Judy Greer and Jenna Fischer, but they were miscast as 2 of the Moms. The kids who played the younger versions of the 3 main guys were also awful actors. I saw in the credits that this was a screen adaption of the book written by these 3 guys. I think that was a bad idea. I don't know anything about their book, but it's structure didn't work as a movie.

Paranormal Activity 4 (2012)

Directors Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman and Screenwriter Christopher Landon return to follow up the series' 2011 entry.

I enjoyed the group's previous effort, which made the haunted house formula of the series incredibly fun.

This fourth entry in the series is a bit bland, resting a bit too much on its laurels, playing it safe and doubling down on the creepy kid formula.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014)

The change of setting and diversity in casting breathes life into a series that faltered quite a bit with its 2012 entry.

Effectively creepy and filled to the brim with occult ramblings.

Final act was a whole lot of fun!

Hanzo the Razor #2: The Snare.

I thought I was getting a standard samurai film. Hanzo the Razor is a constable, who fights bandits, official corruption, and sexual slavers. It was influenced by James Bond and Dirty Harry, there was lots of nudity, and Hanzo rapes every major female character.

It ended up being uncomfortable.

Mandy (2018) - revenge flick starring Nic Cage. Stylishly dark and gory, but without substance.

Amazon Prime

GLOW probably covers the same territory and did a better job.

Maybe if Malin and Thorne fought in the nude this would have been great.

Keep in mind they are all Christian Fundamentists. But I went with it, knowing I'm probably going to have to leave this place at the end of December anyway. OMG, was it hilarious. The movie is the exact opposite of what they expected, but to me, their reaction was pure bliss. I enjoyed making them feel unfortable...It was awesome...I heard some screams...I heard several "Shut it OFF!"...Hahaha...Maybe don't fuck with me in the future...

They probably loved that scene when Franco sucked off that gun

It was ok in some spots and Jeff Goldblum as the evil professor but made for people that are loaded with sugar and short attention spans.

I own this and it still holds up though it has been awhile since I saw it.

Hoffman chewed the scenery and sucks he is not around to showcase his talents.

I bet he would have been working on a long form series on a streaming service if he was around today.

Last Night In Soho (2021)

Wasn't a huge fan of the final act but loved every bit previous to it.

Sleepaway Camp 2 Amazon Prime Streaming
There's a lot wrong with the sequel, -the plot is full of holes and the kills aren't very creative, -and, yet, I found it satisfying in a fast-food at midnight kind of way.

I Drink Your Blood Grindhouse Releasing BD 1971
A small town is visited by a Hippie cult that literally turns rabid and goes on a killing spree..

It starts a little slow, but eventually turned into everything I could want from an authentic "Grindhouse" B-movie. Plenty of supplements, though in the effort to be complete, you get the same set of anecdotes many times over. The set also includes the films "Blue Sextet" and "I Eat Your Skin". "Sextet" aims to be a sophisticated Harold Robbins-style "Sex-Drama" but the lack of budget kills it. "Skin", on the other hand, is a cliche-filled "Men's Adventure" filled with Voodoo and Zombies, and while it's laughable at times, it's very entertaining.

It was pretty funny. I woke up and the Blu-Ray case was laying on the floor outside my door. Clearly, they were not fans. And my roommate kinda commented on it when I went downstairs, something to the effect of, "How bout you not recommend movies anymore." I said, "Sure."

Injustice Warner Bros. Animation BD
After Superman endures a personal tragedy at the hands of The Joker, he decides to use his power to control the world.

I found the animation subpar and some of the voice-casting awful (in particular, Justin Hartley as Superman). Another one I didn't care to finish.

Race with the Devil (S: Peter Fonda, Warren Oates). The guys and their wives are on vacation in a new RV. They accidentally see a human sacrifice by a satanic cult. The cult pursues them wherever they drive. It's packaged in a double-bill with Crazy Larry, Dirty Mary, but it's a superior movie. This is one of those rare well-written horror movies in which the characters never make those stupid choices which only exist to advance the plot.

Friedkin Uncut Showtime Anytime App or Showtime On Demand

Good documentary on Director William Friedkin covering his most noteworthy films, and ignoring some of the lesser ones. He's well in his '80s now and not so much the "Hurricane Billy" he was as a younger man, but he still remains firey and opinionated.

Reminiscence (2021) — Kind of a hollow grounded sci-fi film noir mystery yarn that features decent performances from Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson and Thandiwe Newton but the story wasn't terribly compelling and never quite believed the relationship between Jackman and Ferguson. Kind of ran out of steam early on and spent the remainder of the time not exactly interested in the mystery elements. I don't know, wanted to like it but highly doubtful I'd ever want to revisit. **¾/*****

Bird on a Wire (1990) — Serviceable and entertaining, but throwaway action-romance-comedy with both Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn showing their individual charms. However, the plot is thin and the action kind of average. There's not a whole lot here memorable for either of the stars. Guess it's fine for a lazy Saturday. ***/*****

Stalker - Not really sure what to say. Technically well-made, well-acted, but I'm not pretenious and I have absolutely no idea what the point of the movie was (and that's coming from someone who loves Tarkovsky's Solaris...and hell, I even liked Soderberg's remake with Clooney). I just don't know what to think about this one. It was just bizarre. I'll check out the special features. But, yeah, weird fucking movie.

Check out the book it is based on "Roadside Picnic" by Arkady & Boris Strugatsky - it's a fascinatng premise and original story. It makes more sense of the movie. There is also a history of the Tarkovsky's film, one in that the original with more special effects was lost/destroyed and he had to do a 'do-over', which is much more toned down.
