The Boogeyman (2023)

Although I'm not familiar with the source material Director Rob Savage & Writers Scott Beck, Bryan Woods and Mark Heyman based their film on (Stephen King's 1973 short story), the end result is incredibly generic.

If you've seen Smile (2022), than you've probably already seen 90% of this film.

Mad Heidi (2022)

Oddly enough, this Swisspolitation film would have benefit from being ten-times more schlocky than the final result.

Still, its bookends are a blast and feature solid performances from Alice Lucy & Casper Van Dien.

X-Men: First Class Starz
Directed by Matthew Vaughn

This film explores the origins of the X-Men, as seen through the lens of a '60s Spy Thriller. It's a clever approach that gives the film its own distinct personality. More importantly, the storytelling is sincere and always puts its emphasis on the characters.

Stunt Rock Kino Lorber Blu-Ray
Directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith 1979
Australian stuntman Grant Page goes to Los Angeles to work on a television series. He uses his spare time to lend his expertise to rock band Sorcery, helping them develop pyrotechnic magic tricks for their shows, and also finds himself in a budding romance with a magazine writer as he recounts to her his own exploits as a stuntman and daredevil.

This was designed as a low-budget "Promo" for Grant Page and the band "Sorcery" and it's become something of a cult film. There's not much story but there is some great stunt footage. "Sorcery" was an over-the-top and Theatrical band and their interludes now comes off a lot like "Spinal Tap". The picture quality is quite good and there are lengthy interviews regarding the production of the film.

Hulu

I am down for anything with Kelvin Harrison Jr, and Samara Weaving a smokeshow that could double as Margot Robbie's sister.

This was not bad and a good history lesson on a guy I never heard or knew about.

I wish there was a more comprehenisve look at his life since he did a lot in his life after the events of the movie ended.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) Entertaining enough fantasy/adventure that features a fun script and seems accessible to both fans of D&D and those, like myself, who know very little about it. Also enjoyed the cast with Chris Pine showing his usual charisma and worked nicely opposite Michelle Rodriguez. Did lag a bit in the middle but the finale was good. ***/***** (4K Ultra HD)

X-Men: Days of Future Past :The Rogue Cut 20th Century Fox Blu-Ray
Directed by Brian Singer. 2014
The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.

A solid time-travel story that relies heavily on character and doesn't indulge in a lot of Comedy. This film does throw in more of the vast cast of "supporting mutants" that came in the years after I stopped reading the comics, but the emphasis is on favorites like Wolverine, Professor X, Magneto, Mystique and others.

X-Men: Apocalypse Disney+ 4K
Directed by Bryan Singer
With the emergence of the world's first mutant, Apocalypse, the X-Men must unite to defeat his extinction level plan.

While not a terrible film, it is the least of Singer's efforts. While Singer's other films didn't allow the characters to be upstaged by the effects, "Apocalypse" seems to be filled with actors flailing around against "green screen" backgrounds, with endless shots of buildings being destroyed and rubble flying through the air. While one of the series most powerful villains (and portrayed by Oscar Isaac), En Sabba Nur isn't all that compelling. Jennifer Lawrence, -who was good in the previous two films as "Mystique", -is surprisingly dull here, though that may or may not be her fault. "Jean Grey" is a character that's re-introduced in the film, and she's supposed to have more power than anyone else on-screen and her presence should just be "electric". That's a little too much to ask of Sophie Turner and she just doesn't have the necessary magic.

Starz

I wish I had a dad like the Kirk Douglas character who paid for me to visit a whorehouse inhabited by Jenny McCarthy when I was a teenager.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix 20th Century Fox 4K
Written and Directed by Simon Kinberg
Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.

The keys to the franchise had been taken away from Director Bryan Singer and given to series writer Simon Kinberg. "Phoenix" is more to my taste than the previous film. Once again the threat is both world-shaking and deeply tied to the characters, and the film has some emotional weight. It's darker and more intense and takes a more critical look at "Professor Xavier" than in the previous films. I get the impression the film is generally not well-liked, but I enjoyed it.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Above the Shadows - had this in my Prime watchlist for a while, because it was listed as 'science fiction.' It's not, and it's not very good. On the plus side, it stars Olivia Thirlby (Dredd), whom I like a lot, and Alan Ritchson whom I liked in the Jack Reacher show. But the writing for this is pretty bad. It's an interesting premise, but it isn't really explored in an interesting way. Basically the woman (Thirlby) has been literally invisible (and inaudible apparently) since her mother passed away when the woman was a teenager. But for some reason she discovers that a bouncer at a club can see and hear her. She decided it's a sign that she needs to help him revive his MMA career and that she'll be rewarded by becoming visible again. So it's kind of an urban fantasy/fable.

HBO

Tye Sheriden and Michael Cera were in this so thought I would give it a chance.

This was a endurance test trying to finish it.

The critics loved it but maybe I am a simpleton and did not get what the meaning was or the point of the film?

It seemed like the main character was having a mental breakdown.

MGM +

It was not awful until the ending or the final play and wow what the hell was that?

Maybe this was the most memorable part of the movie.

Earth Girls Are Easy TCM
Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey. Directed by Julien Temple 1988
A Southern California nail technician befriends three furry aliens after their spaceship lands in her swimming pool.

For the last year or so I've been trying to watch some of the movies I passed up on the rental shelves for year and years, and here's another one. I wasn't bowled over by this "Musical Comedy" but it is relentlessly silly and watchable, and the color palette is amazing.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

I'd been meaning to watch this for a couple decades, but finally got around to it yesterday. I have to agree with the middling reviews it received at the time of release. Nice production design and camera work, but a bit toothless for a neo-noir. The highlight was teenage Diane Lane channeling her inner rock star and lip-syncing for her life in the opening and closing musical numbers. Both those tracks (written by "Bat Out of Hell" songwriter Jim Steinman) were immediately added to my playlist and have been on a loop all afternoon.

I remember VH1 did a segment about Staying Alive on one of those I Love the '80s specials. Finola Hughes mentioned the finale and said "I had no idea what that was about... and I was in it. For six weeks!"
