Yeah, I like Die Hard 2 as well. Although the original will always be my favorite.

And I definitely like Die Hard 2 more than Live Free.

The story could revolve around Riggs/Murtaugh infultrating a neo-Nazi group, and the plot-twist reveals that Riggs is a member. I think it could work.

1. Die Hard
2. Die Hard With a Vengeance
3. Live Free or Die Hard
4. Die Hard 2

Die Hard 2 is definitely my least favorite of the sequels. The other two may not be masterpieces of cinema, but they entertained me a hell of a lot more than the second one.

I like Die Hard 2 a whole lot. It still boggles me that on this site of all places that folks can claim that its crap as if their opinion was fact. I've always enjoyed the film and Hell, I like Harlin as a director too. Is it the best film ever? In my opinion, no. I think there is a lot that is silly in it, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying it. You guys need to lighten up and let people enjoy the movies they want without trying to correct them. You can review it and point out all of the flaws you perceive but you won't make me enjoy it any less.

PS: I think Let The Right One In is an overrated snooze-fest. See, opinions are not universal.

Also, in Die Hard 2 he stabs a man in the eye with and icicle! That is bad ass!

The best thing I could say about DH2: It's not bad... for a Renny Harlin film.

LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD was more than just a shitty movie; it metaphorically bricked in the open mouths of anyone who watched it. DH2 might have been dopey and inept -- and make no mistake, it was -- but LFoDH was just full-on 'tardation.

Renny Harlin vs Len Wiseman... hmmm...
Die Hard match up - DH2 vs LFoDH
Significant Other match up - The Long Kiss Goodnight vs Underworld

I give the wins to Renny...

That's just because John McClane has a higher vantage point sitting atop a fighter jet.

As opposed to the passenger plane wing he fought atop in Die Hard 2?

Re: Die Hard 5 >> Bruce Willis (tentative 2011)

Blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda I liked Die Hard 4 etc. etc. etc. I don't know. There is no argument in the world that I would stand behind justifying making a Die Hard PG-13 before they shoot it, yet it's also pretty much impossible for me to look at the final product and believe they could've done better than they did, with a PG-13 rating, at modern-day 20th Century Fox. I guess I also think that everyone knows deep down that 90% of sequels, even the "fun" or "good" ones, are not on par with the originals, so I don't find there's anything precious about the Die Hard name to protect. As long as Die Hard exists and someone can watch it and understand why it's a great movie, well, that's the legacy.

I guess I just wonder what makes McClane for other people. As much as John McClane can and should be R-rated, I never bought that the smoking and swearing defined him; every action hero from the '80s and '90s smoked and swore. The thing that I think survives through all four movies is McClane's half-surprise/half-amusement whenever he manages to take out a villain, and his general reluctance to be involved at all. McClane never tries to learn or adapt. He just goes in, headfirst, hoping that the hard way will be the right way.

Also, I'm tired of the argument that he became invulnerable. DH4 may make him too much of a superhero -- I'll admit the jet stuff is ridiculous even if I liked it, and I don't like that scene where he and Long duck under the flipping taxi -- but when you go through more than two of these movies, there's no more pretending he's Average Joe; the every-man-ness/physical vulnerability just naturally becomes an increasingly moot point because he's the hero of an action franchise. Yes, McClane ought to get the shit beat out of him, because that's what the title and the character is about, but...does anyone really expect him to die? Is leaping off an exploding rooftop, tied to a fire hose, and managing to break back in through a window more unrealistic than rolling off the wing of a falling fighter jet in any sort of meaningful way?

Good! Debate settled forever :)

My preference:

Die Hard (*****) - the first and the best, obviously. The battle between McClane and Gruber is top-notch and the film has plenty of great, creative scenes, including the one where the two meet up near the roof. I agree with Ebert that Gleason's character is uselessly moronic, but it doesn't bother me overall.

Live Free or Die Hard (****) - for me, what makes LFoDH work is its consistency. It's a whole grade less than the original, thanks to the PG-13, a couple of goofy moments (jet and taxi flip), and a weak villain, but Bruce is great throughout, and I appreciate Len Wiseman's use of more physical stunts and effects than some films (real cop car into real helicopter, real van in elevator, real stunt people flying out of windows and jumping around on buildings, etc).

Die Hard With a Vengeance (***1/2) - This one WOULD be the second best in the series: great action, an uncensored Bruce paired with a bitter Sam Jackson, and clever motivation for Jeremy Irons, but it blows it with an extremely lame reshot third act that ranks as the most tired and uninspired sequence in any Die Hard.

Die Hard 2: Die Harder (***1/2) - I can't lie. As infected with sequelitis as it is, I do LIKE Die Hard 2, but it's cruel in a way that feels more "of the time" than "of the series", and I think its musty, murky cinematography has dated it more than any of the other entries.

I agree with droidguy's assessment and ranking. LFoDH is just fun and the McClane of this film is more like the McClane from the original than in any other sequel. I liked that Willis has some good banter with his daughter like he did with Holly in the first. Is most of it over the top? Sure, but really that's the only place this franchise can go at this point.

 Agree. Plus, I enjoyed the inclusion of Tim Olyphant and Maggie Q as the villains.

I liked 2 more than 3 or 4.

1. DH
2. DH2
3. DH4
4. DH3

Maybe that means the odd number Die Hards are good, so #5 will be good too! :p

The sequence in Live Free where Gabriel was switching off essential services in DC alone is better than all of Die Hard 2.

As I suggested some time ago in a another thread, maybe it's time to for studios to start combining franchises.

Bruce Willis teams up with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover for... wait for it...

Die Hard With A Lethal Weapon

McClane and Riggs beat the crap out of each other.

I'd pay to see that. -popcorn-

Is this the new David Lynch film?

I think the fourth one gets bashed a little too much. It's not like it's Batman & Robin or something

I kind of like it more than 3.

Live Free or Die Hard would have been better as a sequel to Mercury Rising, in which the autistic boy grows up to be Justin Long.
