My preference:

Die Hard (*****) - the first and the best, obviously. The battle between McClane and Gruber is top-notch and the film has plenty of great, creative scenes, including the one where the two meet up near the roof. I agree with Ebert that Gleason's character is uselessly moronic, but it doesn't bother me overall.

Live Free or Die Hard (****) - for me, what makes LFoDH work is its consistency. It's a whole grade less than the original, thanks to the PG-13, a couple of goofy moments (jet and taxi flip), and a weak villain, but Bruce is great throughout, and I appreciate Len Wiseman's use of more physical stunts and effects than some films (real cop car into real helicopter, real van in elevator, real stunt people flying out of windows and jumping around on buildings, etc).

Die Hard With a Vengeance (***1/2) - This one WOULD be the second best in the series: great action, an uncensored Bruce paired with a bitter Sam Jackson, and clever motivation for Jeremy Irons, but it blows it with an extremely lame reshot third act that ranks as the most tired and uninspired sequence in any Die Hard.

Die Hard 2: Die Harder (***1/2) - I can't lie. As infected with sequelitis as it is, I do LIKE Die Hard 2, but it's cruel in a way that feels more "of the time" than "of the series", and I think its musty, murky cinematography has dated it more than any of the other entries.

Good reviews. I pretty much agree with all of that. :)

Because it's a movie discussion forum? Because's we're discussing the Die Hard series? Because it's ON TOPIC? Because if you don't like it feel free to go pound sand.

Sorry, but posting "this is the worst movie ever" "this is the worst movie ever" "this is the worst movie ever" "this is the worst movie ever" "this is the worst movie ever" over and over doesn't constitute a discussion IMO.

I love Live Free or Die Hard, just wish they would do the unrated version on Blu-Ray.

It was way over the top and McClane has turned into this unstoppable super hero, but I loved how the movie acknowledged it. McClane is very self aware that he is going to win and I love the way that Willis played it, taunting the bad guys the whole way. Hell, even the bad guys seem to know they are fucked.

I also thought Justin Long was great. He really played the voice of the audience everytime McClane did something rediculous.

Nothing can touch the first one, but LFoDH is one of my most rewatched movies. Love it.

Part two is good, but seems really dated for me. I think most of that has to do with the murky way Harlin shot it.

I loved part three at the time, but the whole racial back and forth between Willis and Jackson really annoys me now. Jeremy Irons was great. Last 1/3 of the movie with the Dumb Truck and Boat really kills it for me.

Die Hard
Live Free
Die Hard w/Vengence
Die Hard 2

I'm actually among the minority that enjoyed Live Free Or Die Hard. It can't touch the original (none of the sequels do) but it was a solid actioner.

The Geneva Convention does not prohibit us from showing Live Free or Die Hard to you and your men, as you are not Prisoners of War, but common Thieves and Murderers...

I don't think we're in the minority, I just think Hokeyboy is being so loud in his opposition that it seems like there's more of him then there really is.

I'm with you... easily the worst in the series IMO, and it barely resembles the character that Willis was previously reluctant to return to. This was the script that changed his mind? And now he wants to do more?

Perhaps Bruce is entering his Robert DeNiro phase ... i.e. his unapologetic whore for money phase

I'm rewatching Live Free or Die Hard right now. I still like it. It's no Die Hard With A Vengeance but it's still a good time at the movies, which I cannot say about Die Hard 2.

Just watched "Live Free or Die Hard" it was a pretty average action movie, nothing special but entertaining enough but something I still don't get why is called Live Free?
