That said, I don't get the hate for DIE HARD 2.

At least that one FELT like a DIE HARD movie. Ridiculousness aside, at least we get Bonnie Bedelia, Reginald Veljohnson, William Atherton, and "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow."

Die Hard 3 and Die Hard 4 were DIE HARD movies only because they plugged Bruce in an action movie.

I agree with you about Die Hard 2. Great action movie. Over the top? It's an action movie. Am I understanding correctly that the complaints are it's not as believable as Die Hard?
Seriously? Sure, the action in DH2 was on a grander scale to the point of a James Bond movie but so what? Yes, it repeats some of the plot points of the first but it didn't bother me. I love DH2 as much as DH. The other ones not as much but I still enjoy them.

A humorless McClane? Fuck that! Tears of the Sun was a humorless Die Hard! If John McClane is not cracking wise then what's the point?!

Of course I'm still pissed that Mary Elizabeth Winstead isn't his partner in crime this go-around. :grumble:

I've liked ALL the DIE HARD films (yes, even the last one)...but I DO wish they'd go back (at least one more time) to the claustrophoic one man versus impossible odds that the first one provided. The last two were more "buddy cop" movies than the original formula.

DH3 is my favorite cuz that's the one I grew up the most and it introduced me to Jeremy Irons. I thought he was a great villain. DH is the better film..but I prefer DH3 out of nostalgia and Irons.

I would rank them:

Die Hard
Die Hard with a Vengeance
Die Hard 2
Live Free or Die Hard

This.

There is a natural progression to the Die Hard series.

Die Hard (in a Building)
Die Harder (in an Airport)
Die Hard with a Vengeance (in a city)
Live Free or Die Hard (in the entire country)
A Good Day to Die Hard (worldwide)
Old Habits, Die Hard (in space!)
Live Fast, Die Hard, Leave a Good looking Corpse (Vs. Satan who is played by Alan Rickman and is invading heaven)

Die Hard (remake starring flavor of the month teen idol, rated pg-13, 3D Lie-max format.)

I really love most of Vengeance. I think the only thing that I think of as a letdown in Vengeance is the ending. For some reason the ending never did it for me. Other than that, I loved the flick.

Die Hard 4 was just too slick or something. I don't know exactly what it is. But they (John McTiernan, Jan de Bont, etc) bring that asthetic from movies like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Speed, Jack Ryan movies, etc.
It was too over-the-top and seemed more like your average run-of-the-mill action movie than a Die Hard movie. Live Free seemed to be too expansive.

Agreed 100%.

Agreed.

McClane does not need a sidekick. Powell worked well in the the first one because he was mostly outside of the action. In the second one he was pretty much alone, again with some outside help though. For Vengeance the saving grace with the sidekick was that Samuel Jackson was great in the part. Justin Long didn't make a great sidekick.

Just watched this last wknd.... I think they could've shaved some of the running time off here and there - for example, have Irons' first scene be when he walks up to the bank exec (instead of the give-away on top of the building).

Still a solid, fun film.... I'd rank the sequels pretty much in order. DH2 kind of follows the Home Alone sequel, in that it's so similar, basically copying the first one...but I liked that approach.

as long as it is a good action flick, who gives a flying shit if he's a cop or not.

This at least looks to have some personality versus the last one. I haven't seen any of John Moore's movies, they all looked pretty bad.

This could be fun at least, and it'll be a damn trick to be a more bland director than Len Wiseman.

Not a good teaser. Just a bunch of random shots with no real context. But whatever, I'm sure it'll be better than that entry with the "I'm a Mac" guy.

Yep. All flash, no context, lots of gunfire and explosions and car chases... but I'll admit it has me ever-so-slightly excited to check it out. It's gotta be better than the last one, right?

It's a teaser, it's either a bunch of random shots with no real context, a logo, or something that won't be in the movie.

Just there to make people aware of the fact that it's coming out.
