Re: Thor (Branagh, 2011) — The Reviews Thread
I really enjoyed this movie, far more than I was expecting to. As a lot of people are saying it wasn't as good as Ironman but better than Ironman 2, I actually thought it was as good as Ironman, if not a little more. But comparing the two is a bit odd, since one is way more rooted in fantasy than the other. All good nonetheless, I'm really looking forward in seeing those two fighting side by side. I think Branaugh did a damn fine job with this.
But The 3D wasn't worth it IMO. Some scenes did look good, but there werent any scenes I felt that looked amazing because it was in 3D. I'd definitely encourage my friends and family to see this in 2D.

I saw it. Liked it. My biggest issue is the battle with the Destroyer seemed weak. I understand that wasn't meant to be "boss" fight, since Thor was so obviously going to fight Loki. But, it just seemed like once Thor got his hammer it wasn't even a match. Outside of that, Chris Helmsworth was damn good as Thor. Nothing like I expected since we all heard those rumors of how bad he was. Natalie Portman was OK. Loved all Thor's crew and wish we would've seen more of them. A few of the fight scenes were a little shaky but it's understood given that quite a bit of that may have been CGI.

this is the best marvel superhero film i've seen. better than Ironman...IMO. Maybe cause I'm more partial to the fantasy/mythology type of movie. this is a must see movie if you are a fan of action/superhero movies.

The aspect that resonated strongly with me in this film was Thor's genuine heroism. He's a hero worth rooting for, despite his character flaws which are in all honesty, well-intentioned. His selflessness is apparent very early on and it's a great ride seeing him grow into the man Odin desires him to become. I can't think of another Marvel hero that thinks so much of, to borrow a famous line, "the needs of the many," as opposed to his own desires.
If that isn't enough, Loki is a fantastic villain. They really got his "trickster" nature down and they gave him a good deal of pathos, leading up to his full embodiment of villany, but even then he's not "comic book" evil.
After seeing Thor in all his Asgardian glory, with his powers never coming off as hokey, I feel the new Superman movie has a tough act to follow in terms of aerial and superhuman action, not to mention pure heroism in the character.
I'm definitely looking forward to "The Avengers" now and it will be fun to see how the big three interact. We have Thor whose for the people and selfless, Tony Stark who still has a major selfish streak, and Captain America, who according to reports will likely fall in the middle: for the people but disillusioned with the jingoism.

Also, I see Captain Marvel as Thor's direct DC equivalent, but there's no way to ignore the Superman comparison. I said early on after seeing Thor's Destroyer footage that any new Superman film would almost require him fighting some kind big god damn villain.

I tend to agree. I liked Thor more than BOTH Iron Man films.

For me:
Really Liked - Iron Man, Spider-man 2, and X2: X-Men United
Liked - Blade, Blade 2, Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, Spider-man, X-Men, and Thor
Didn't Like - Blade Trinity, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Hulk, Iron Man 2, Punisher, Spider-man 3, X-Men: Last Stand, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine
I haven't seen Daredevil, Elektra, Ghost Rider, or Punisher: War Zone.

oh, a few more comments. I think the guy who played Loki did a fantastic job. Oddly, I thought Anthony Hopkins was the weakest of all the actors that had major screen time . His performance was kind of wooden and seemed like he was just going through the motions.

Really? I think that was Hopkins' best performance in years. Then again, I think he's become nothing but a scenery chewer in the past decade.

While not a perfect film, Thor was the first of the Marvel films to portray one of their mystical/magical heroes in such a way that he does seem to belong to the same movie universe as a more scientifically-based one like Iron Man. And, ultimately, it fulfills the promise of the character on film in a way that I didn't think possible. While not up there with the original Iron Man, it certainly doesn't fall much far behind it, certainly better than the 2nd, Incredible Hulk, and most of the non-Marvel Studios Marvel films with the possible exception of Spider-Man 2.

I liked him in 'Fracture'.
Besides that he's just been coasting for a decade now though I think. phoning in performances that smack of arrogance and artifice for the most part.

Maybe it's me but...I no way am I surprised by Hopkins' performance...cuz it's practically Hopkins in Shakespeare mode. It's an easy role for him and it worked.

People who're good at what they do often make it seem that way.

Nitpick...Didn't like seeing the compound bow. Would've preferred a Longbow.

This movie was a blast - it's not perfect but I loved it. Saw it in 3D and 2D so far and definitely think 2D is the way to go - 3D added nothing at all. I do think the finale could have been retooled to be cooler and the FX aren't too convincing in that section. The casting was perfect and Hemsworth is a certified star, he just OWNS in this. The dutch angles started to get to me but I think Branagh did a great job, bringing enough gravitas to the Asgard stuff and a good lightness to the Earth portions. Can't wait for Captain America now, it's got a lot to live up to. 4/5
