I liked Coulson in the IM1, in IM2 it felt kind of forced. He was cool here. There was meat to his part. As in...now you know what his job is like and it's getting kind of redundant for this guy...but he does a good job.

Very enjoyable. Nice breakout roles for both Hemsworth and Middleton.

I laughed out-loud at a couple clunky and blatant product placements for Southwest Airlines.

"Son of Coul."

Very fun movie. I tend to like just about all Marvel movies, but this one was among the best, I thought. Hemsworth was great, as was pretty much the whole cast. Very nice characterization throughout---their motivations and interactions seemed natural and unforced. Very good pacing between action and slower scenes, Asgard and Earth, drama and humor, etc. Thor was my favorite Marvel character as a kid, and this movie definitely did him justice.

Re: Thor (Branagh, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

Like everyone else, enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm in the camp of "Better then Iron Man 2 and Hulk, not quite as good as Iron Man." I thought it started off a bit slow, and some of the characters felt a bit weak like Heimdall, Thor's friends, and Skarsgard's character. Selvig and Foster never feel particularly believable as scientists. I also didn't really think the relationship between Jane and Thor was developed very well. Other then that though, very good movie. I'm glad the action scenes with Thor tossing his hammer or flying didn't come off as cheesy and just looked cool, and Thor and Loki were both absolutely fantastic in their roles.

Looking forward to more Marvel

I just have a feeling this was due to the 3D print calling attention to these aspects than anything else. I really want to see it in 2D as it might be more impressive.
I saw it in 2D and have all the same gripes with the CG that you did. Still enjoyed the movie, though.

I do wish they could have achieved better results meshing the CG ice giants with the guys in make-up. It's seemed we never got a real sense of these characters being organic and interacting with the humans on screen. It was either a dim, slightly dodgy CG version getting tossed around by Thor -- or just a close-up of an actor in make-up anytime they had to deliver a line. I'm glad they chose to include some cool mythological action set-pieces, but I wasn't all that impressed with the results during that sequence.

BTW, that Almighty Thor knock-off film is premiering on SyFy right now. I'll give it a watch to see if it's funny lame... or just lame lame.

Totally! And I love me some Kat Dennings, but the Darcy character adds nothing to the plot of this film. Comic relief? I dunno... most of her "funny" lines were used in the trailer and they didn't do anything to sell me on the movie's comedic sensibilities. I guess the Facebook reference worked better in the context of the scene... and the iPod line was mildly amusing, but nothing that mustered more than a light chuckle from the audience.

* * * 1/2 out of * * * * *

The Earth scenes were TOTAL buzzkill. The Asgard / Jotenheim scenes were AMAZING. Not enough chemistry between Thor and Foster; they looked nice together and seemed to get along, but I got NO feeling that she was the ONE! BIG! RELATIONSHIP! THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING!! Perfunctory is the best way I'd describe it.

The Asgard/Supernatural scenes made this movie for me. I loved the Rainbow Bridge, Heimdall, the set design, the 1980 Flash Gordon meets Master of the Universe vibe.

But overall, really good movie. Enjoyed it. But in the grand scheme of Marvel movies, I'd rank 'em:
  1. Spider-Man 2
  2. Blade
  3. X2
  4. Incredible Hulk
  5. Thor
  6. Blade 2
  7. Iron Man 2
  8. X-Men
  9. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
  10. Ghost Rider
  11. Hulk
  12. Spider-Man 3
  13. Daredevil
  14. Punisher
  15. X-Men: The Last Stand
  16. Fantastic Four
  17. Blade Trinity
  18. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
  19. Elektra (couldn't even finish this one)

Re: Thor (Branagh, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

Went in with low expectations today (due to the extremely weak trailers) and came out loving the movie. My son and I saw it in 3D and as others have mentioned, skip the 3D and see it in 2D. Not worth the money and actually makes me want to go back and see the movie in 2D.

The drama, humor and action all hit the right notes and I was never bored. The characters were well rounded and the movie never seemed silly or dumb. The guy playing Thor did an much better job than I expected and seemed born for the part by the first third of the movie. I thought the CG was good and my only disappointment was that Rene Russo never got naked.

My 7 year old enjoyed the movie too but I think he got a little bored with it during some of the more dramatic/characterization parts. But those parts are what made me love the movie more than I expected. Very well done and highly recommended. If they would just put out a decent trailer for the movie, they may do even better though word of mouth should spread pretty good for this one.

A long trailer for Captain America was shown before this and it is the comic movie I am looking most forward to this summer but Thor held it's own and I feel it fits nicely with the recent Marvel movies. Much, much better than Iron Man 2 thank goodness.

My rating: ****1/2 out of *****

but clunky as hell. I don't mind the compact bow. Whatever gets Hawkeye to do his job. I'm actually excited to see the Cap and Hawkeye moments. For those of you that don't know...they didn't get along at times.

Re: Thor (Branagh, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

why was this movie rated PG-13?

I loved the music score.

I thought the post production 3D'ing of the movie was pointless, except for the post credit scene where it actually looked like it WAS shot with a 3D camera (oh my god actually depth)

Cuz there's fantasy violence? Why do you ask? All the Marvel Studio films have been PG-13.

No not really. I've seen Longbows and Recurve bows that were compact then opened to full size.

But this is just s nitpick for me. I won't play Net Nerd and go all goofy on this minor issue.

I really didn't think the 'fantasy' violence was THAT brutal, I thought it could have easily been PG. okay, maybe when Thor was spazzing out at the hospital, but really come on, there been some PG-13 violent movies that skirt closer to an R-rating than this.

I enjoyed the film. I think enjoyed the stuff on Aasgard a little more than the stuff on Earth.
Enjoyed Hemsworths portrayal and Thor as well as the actor who played Loki.
Great effects too.
Looking forward to Whedon's Avengers.

from what the MPAA site says:
Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence
When the Destroyer meets the Shield guys he does knock some of those guys about. Did any of them die? seems like one guy went into that blast. And yeah...the Frost giants were a bit beaten up.

Re: Thor (Branagh, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

Thanks for the advice concerning 2D vs 3D - I saved myself $4 catching the 2D version this afternoon. I'm not anti-3D or anything, but this post-production 3D thing seems generally silly and not worth it.

I don't remember a movie poll with the scores as tightly bunched as this one. Thor really is a quintessential 4 (out of 5) star movie - clearly not perfect, but still doing a lot right and being highly entertaining. Like a lot of people, I was skeptical about this project at the start. Now I'm looking forward to seeing Thor again in "Avengers". Though it'll be tricky meshing Thor with the other Marvel heroes, since he seems to be on a completely different power level than the others. But if the comics made it work, I'm sure good writing can handle it. Certainly "Avengers" seems to be setting up a threat that will test the power of Thor and his Asgard friends, in addition to Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, and whatever other heroes they throw into the mix.

Now I'm set to watch "Almighty Thor"! I'm sure it will give "Thor" a run for its money

Re: Thor (Branagh, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

well considering that in this Universe much like the comics universe did...The Hulk is an established danger. They'll probably want to take him down somehow..which I can't wait to see. Loki will be a bigger deal but I want to see The Avengers fight Hulk before he's in. We got a taste of what a Cap vs. Hulk situation would be like in The Incredible Hulk w/ Blonsky fighting him using a variation of the Super Soldier formula. Granted...Blonsky wasn't to Cap's level in tactic. Thor will face someone who doesn't know how to go down and Iron Man will have to play it smart lest he get caught and crushed like a little Tin Man. I'd also welcome to hear the Hulk talk a bit more w/ shouting his makeup names for Cap, Thor, and Iron man.

Re: Thor (Branagh, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

Well, I just finished watching "Almighty Thor". I had incredibly low expectations ... and this still managed not to meet them For some reason, the whole movie seems to be shot with some kind of blue filter giving everything a dull washed-out look. Much of the movie just has Thor, Jarnsaxa (his female warrior friend), and Loki running around deserted back alleys of LA. If you have a thing for dumpsters and empty warehouses, this is the movie for you! Despite everyone fighting over something called "The Hammer of Invincibility", whoever possesses the hammer seems to always get their ass kicked.
