I've never read a Thor comic in my life and was ho-hum about this all along, but count me extremely pleasantly surprised.

About it looking cheesy: that was one of my fears going into this as the trailer and photos didn't blow me away. But it really doesn't. Everything fits within the realms of Asgard, the frost planet and earth and nothing really looks ridiculous. Hemsworth and all the Asgardians look pretty awesome in their costumes.

Re: Thor (Branagh, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

The wife and I caught a screening this morning, and the movie was certainly more exciting than I expected.
Spoiler:
Thor's battle with the Frost Giants at the beginning being just one standout. Jeremy Renner has more or less a walk-on role, but it did leave me excited to see more Hawkeye in The Avengers.

Branagh's action scenes were very well-staged, and the cast is in good form, especially Hemsworth, Clark Gregg and Idris Elba. The small doses of comedy were well-received by the crowd, as they were peppered in sparingly.

The 3D was pretty unnecessary, which shouldn't be of much surprise. Feel free to save a few bucks on that charge.

I absolutely recommend the film, but I can see this film playing out more like The Incredible Hulk, in that it supports The Avengers, but may not necessarily start its own individual franchise. Hemsworth is great, and I look forward to seeing more of him, although outside of a larger Marvel team-up, I'm not sure if audiences will want to follow Thor solo. Hopefully I'm proven, though.

Good solid Iron Man-level fun. It's kind of slow to really get going, but by the end I was having a good time. Hemsworth is much better casting than I'd thought, and I quite liked Hiddelston as Loki. It's not perfect (there's probably no really feasible way to keep Asgard from looking a bit too much like Queen music video) but quite entertaining. B+

I found it to be very entertaining. I liked it much better than Iron Man 2. Good mindless fun. While the 3D wasn't necessary, I was very impressed with the depth it gave the world of Asgard.

Stan Lee cameo: check
Subtle background music in one scene by a band who's album just came out a few weeks ago: check
Additional build-up scene after credits: check

So this was not shot in 3-D? Was it converted afterwards? The theater I am going to doesn't have a choice between the two.

Saw this at a preview tonight in Chicago. Hell of a lot of fun, right up there with the first Iron Man. I am loving the way Marvel is inteconnecting these movies and characters for an orgasmic build-up to The Avengers. Bring on Captain America!!

Do you think Captain America will suffer at the Box office because it is a period film?

I'm gonna go see this today. The 2D version is in a rinky dink screen so I guess I'll see my first converted 3D movie today.

^ FWIW, I believe the FX shots were done in 3D, and the rest was a post conversion.

Seeing it tonight. Hope it's as good as everyone is claiming. Been reading some Thor from the runs of Walter Simonson and Stracyznski (sp?) and it's pretty good stuff. Thor's stories are truly more epic in nature than a typical Marvel story, so I hope the movie keeps that aspect.

Re: Thor (Branagh, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

Ive heard that on a technical level, the conversion itself isn't bad, but when it comes to the creative decisions regarding shot compositions, use of 3D, etc, etc, its clear that it was shoehorned in.

Either way, the movie didnt need to be converted or shot in 3D.

I consciously avoided seeing it in 3D (as I have most 3D flicks post-Avatar) and glad I did, it was just fine without it. And pretty much every 3D movie I've seen has been projected WAY too dark.

Same here , and I have to say that kind of baffles me.

This critic disliked it so much he decided to write a review that pretty much spoils the whole plot with a pretty much kingly disregard.

I have to say I had to render the review invalid when I read this blurb:

And then I had sex for the first time, and I kind of stopped following comics, not out of a put-away-childish-things compulsion -- no, really -- but more of a time-management issue. He claims he's a fan of the old-school Thor comic by Kirby, which I can respect, but he didn't need to make that kind of a crack.

Branagh was on Kimmel last night & stated that the whole movie was shot in 2D & that all the 3D was put in in post production. Our theater has 4 prints & 3 are 3D, They really are pushing it. I'll be watching it on the lone 2D screen.

I'm avoiding his review, per your advice, but seriously is he some sort of Harry Knowles wannabe with writing like that?
