Casey Ryback? REALLY?!

Your other picks were pretty good, but that one was baffling to me.

I think a lot of lists (including my own) suffered due to multiple portrayals and sequels. If we were able to specify a specific performance in a specific film those lists would have been stronger.

(Not a criticism of the game, we all knew the rules going in -- just a general comment)

OK guys, the mods have talked about this, and despite what happened in the Feedback thread, we are willing to let this go on. We currently have two options:

1. We can wait for Osiris to come back. His suspension is for a few weeks, so the game would be on hold for a while.

2. We have someone voted out of the first round take over and finish the game without Osiris' involvement. We can use this thread to choose who will take over the game.

Let me know what you think.

didn't know he got suspended..

anyhow I vote for just waiting for him to come back, its his baby! .. although he did say at some point he would be gone for a month on vacation or something like that..

Then someone would have to finish it up for him.

I'm of two minds about this. On one hand, and I think I got into a bit of dispute with Osiris about this early on, I saw this as about the characters and not the performances. I think it's fascinating to contrast the different ways that James Bond or Count Dracula have been portrayed over the years. If you put Roger Moore's womanizing near-superhero next to Timothy Dalton's monogamous self-loather, it's hard to reconcile that they're both playing the same character--and yet, both are clearly playing James Bond.

On the other hand, I took a hit from one voter who said I had "too many 'variouses'" on my list (Bond, Dracula and the Cowardly Lion, my top three). It became difficult, I think, for a lot of voters to take a character with several cinematic incarnations and compare them with characters who existed in a singular feature portrayed by one actor.

My solution, going forward, would be not to call it a character game at all, but specifically identify it what I think Osiris really wanted to do, and that is have a game pitting specific acting performances against one another.

I almost picked Ryback, because I'm a huge Seagal fan.

I tried to choose characters who were only played by one or two actors specifically so that people would think of those performances that had impressed me enough to put them on my list. The one exception to that was Bugs Bunny, who, by virtue of being animated, is known as a singular character regardless of who did the voice.

Re: DVDTalk draft game

I actually didn't read the rules. I thought the individual characters were going to be going against each other like we had that movie tournament earlier in the year. I didn't realize we were drafting a team to be judged against one another.

I thought we were going to end up with one winning 'character'.

If it's okay with the mods, and there's no objection from the players, I'll be happy to create the next poll (singular!).

I'm fine with this. Though I hate to move forward with no input from Osiris. I haven't even looked/nor gone thru the experience (:fc:), can you log in, receive PM/e-mail thru DVD Talk while serving your time?

Edit: Just sent him an e-mail thru the site, to see if it worked and/or to see if he'll respond with any thoughts.

I'd be willing to run it if we think that is the best way to go forward. I don't think a multi choice poll would work, so we would need 4 threads. We could run 2 concurrent threads or 4. I don't think the people who really dislike theses threads would be less mad about 2 threads than 4 (but I could be wrong).

A multi-choice poll would work fine. If somebody voted for both, that's their prerogative -- no negative impact it just cancels out their own vote for that match-up.

Then you introduce the problem of people accidently voting/not voting. I suppose it would be worth that to avoid the complaints.

Edit to add: That also makes for one massive first post or 4 large first posts.

How about 2 polls starting today going to Monday, then the next 2 start?

Or let's just wait for Osiris to get back

Not a big deal (to me anyways). That's how we always have done it in previous draft games.

Re: DVDTalk draft game

I think it could be set up in one poll. In the poll itself, you'd want to bold the first two, "un"bold the next two, and so on to separate them a bit. I think that's how the favorite movie/character threads that Woody created were set up. <s>You could also link each list in the OP to lamphorn's commentary...</s>
