Re: DVDTalk draft game

Your OP indicated 3 days. I'm fine with sticking with that. However, if everyone wants a shorter time frame, that's ok...personally I wouldn't go with less than 48 hours.

Man the last pick is always tough, I was debating between about 10 characters for 20 minutes or so. Gotta go with the lead in the best WWII movie ever.

Tom Hanks isn't the lead in The Guns of Navarone.

I have that movie in my Netflix queue, and I'm sure it's good..but I don't think it will hold a candle to SPR

I'm still sickened by the fact that it lost Best Picture to Shakespeare in Love

Considering I think that SPR is a great opening and an OK closing sandwiching a crap film, I'm sickened it was even nominated for best picture.

The best character in the best WWII movie is a bad, bad man.

I've heard that opinion expressed on more than one occasion. Having still not actually seen the movie, I can't comment on it beyond the fact that even people I've heard praise the movie tend to concentrate on the opening more than anything else.

(Oh, and this is the kind of remark that can get you into some trouble around here; just sayin'.)

Strangely, the same way that it feels to be right.

Re: DVDTalk draft game

This is an outrage! I'm kicking out all the draft participants who don't like SPR

What don't ya'll like? The great acting? The engaging and suspenseful story? The realistic and exciting battles? The world class directing? The amazing production design and awe inspiring cinematography?

Don't kick 'em out. Just make a note of them and don't vote for them.

It's not even Spielberg's best WWII movie.

Like I said, I still haven't seen Saving Private Ryan, but ignoring that for the moment, here's how I'd rank 'em:

Schindler's List
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Empire of the Sun (although it's been ages since I've seen it; might go higher)
That scene in Jaws where Quint describes the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
1941

For my final pick...

"Toga, Toga"

John Blutarsky (John Belushi, Animal House, 1979)

Bobby Shalom already selected him in the seventh round.

Re: DVDTalk draft game

Raiders of the Lost Ark took place in the early 30's, not during WWII (September 1939-August 1945). The Nazi party existed before than obviously

I know when WWII began; it's the year of Raiders I missed. And so did you, actually: 1936 (which hardly counts as "the early 30's"), according to IMDb. (I'm entirely too lazy to throw on the DVD just to check the on-screen date.)

Re: DVDTalk draft game

I didn't look up the date of Raiders, I just guessed it was early 30's. Close enough.

I'm also not looking this up, so blow me if I'm wrong about this. But isn't Temple of Doom set before Raiders? I read that somewhere once.
