I doubt they won't use Green Goblin again. He's essentially to Spider-Man what The Joker is to Batman. It only makes sense for him to be in one of the films if you ask me.

The KGRogers in me says Green Goblin is Spider-Man's arch-enemy, sure. In the films, I thought Dr Octopus was the best villain.

If anything, I always thought it was funny that his baddies were usually purple and green. I know of the ink limitations of the period and implications of primary and secondary colors in comics of the Lee/Ditko era, but it was still amusing.

He's a big deal now since 1996. Before though? His major triumphs were finding out Parker was Spidey and then The Death of Gwen Stacy. Stacy's death being the bigger deal. He later was impaled by his own glider in a fight w/ Spidey a bit later

In 1996. He came back and turned out to be a mastermind of all the crazy fucking shit that was happening since 1994...The Clone Saga. And it ended w/ Ben Reilly, the at the moment Spider-Man (also the former Scarlet Spider), dying and Peter finding out he wasn't the clone after all.

So to me? Being 10 years old when he came back? Big deal. Nobody has been this big in Spidey's life like Norman Osborn has. They'd all been pretty even. The major ones that is. They were all pretty evened out.

Osborn made it personal though w/ what he did in the '70s. None of the others really did that. Venom was closest thing to being around so much.

For those interested, there is a Walmart exclusive preview DVD for TASM out today, which comes with a comic and it seems to be the first appearance of The Lizard.

On the DVD you'll find:

A BTS piece (7:32) with Webb, Garfield, Stone, Sheen, Field and others contribute, you see parts of two scenes which have not been seen before and it is pretty good.

An exclusive scene which I will name in the following spoiler tag and detail in a spoiler tag below The scene runs 2:38

A sneak peak of TASM Video Game (looks pretty good, I loved Spider-man 2 on Gamecube back in the day, can't get much better than web swinging through NYC in HD) which is a tad short at :57

And lastly the 2nd theatrical trailer, which is the only segment on this disc in 5.1, the rest are all DD Stereo.

The sound is good, the video is okay, not as good as I expected but not horrible, it is a DVD after all. The featurette plays by default as does the scene, then you are taken to the menu where all 4 are selectable.

I haven't read the comic but it looks pretty cool. As pictured this is $2.96 at Walmart and I think it may have rang up as less than that (I have to find my receipt). Hope this helps you guys out, it's a cool little look at the movie and could be a great Father's Day surprise for any Spidey fan, plus it's a neat collector's item, I'm happy with mine.

Growing up in the 80's and reading Marvel Tales and ASM, Kingpin was the one guy Spidey always had trouble with. It's too bad Miller included him in his Daredevil run and made him his own. Younger readers now associate him with DD more.

Arch-enemy doesn't mean "best" villain or "favorite" villain. Arch-enemy is really just who does the most fucked up shit to the hero. For Batman, it has always been Joker who is Batman's arch-enemy. For Superman its Lex Luthor, and for Spider-Man its the Green Goblin.


Don't forget Sins Past where it was revealed Norman impregnated Gwen...

Yeah. I'm not sure why they thought that was smart. Straczynski did a lot of stuff I liked w/ Parker. And that..was the end of that. Add in that they had a different artist was well. His team up w/ Romita Jr. was amazing. Great team. Sins Past though...Jesus...

Sins Past is almost universally regarded as the worst Spider-Man of all time. The only story that is possibly hated as much is One More Day.

Originally what happened is that Captain Stacy was killed in crossfire during a battle between Doc Ock and Spidey. Gwen blamed Spidey for it as much as she did Ock, and she couldn't handle living in NYC anymore with the constant reminders of Spidey being everywhere. So she moved to France.

Well then in 2004, J. Michael Straczynski decides to completely change that by writing a storyarc called Sins Past. It is then revealed that Norman fucked Gwen and got her pregnant. Now the reason she moved to France had basically nothing to do with her father's death, but instead she moved there so Peter wouldn't find out she was pregnant. Then later on when Norman kills her, originally he just killed her to mess with Spidey, but Sins Past said he killed her to cover up the pregnancy.

Gwen actually gave birth to twins, a boy and girl. Norman genetically engineered them to age faster and mindwiped them into believing Peter killed their mother. So then they eventually came back seeking revenge on Peter as... the Grey Goblin...

Sins Past was such a steaming pile of horse shit.


It was just yet another crappy editorial mandate. I agree Straczynski's run started off great and definitely helped revive the comic after all the 90s Clone Saga crap, but Sins Past was just horrible. Straczynski did later say that he originally planned to make Peter the father of Gwen's kids, but the editors wouldn't let him do it because they felt Peter having kids would age him too much. (Remember MJ was pregnant during the early part of the Clone Saga as well and Norman kidnapped the baby. Then they basically pretended it never even happened since the baby was never seen again afterward for the very same reason of the editors not wanting Peter to have kids.)

Oh yeah, OMD is definitely hated to the level of SP, if not even more so. I remember the last issue of OMD, a lot of people bought it and then taped themselves ripping it in half or throwing it in a fire and put it up on youtube to show their protest of it. Like this guy:

I gave up following monthly comics back in 1985 and nothing I've seen or heard from fans in the last 27 years (good or bad) has made me regret that. The last 20 years in particular also don't make me regret not pursuing a job in the industry. OMD sounds like an absolutely hilarious FU to regular followers of the character. But I guess trying to constantly work with a continuity built up over four decades (for a character who's spent most of his life in his 20's) it's bound to come to that.
If I were made editor-in-chief or publisher of one of the big two, my first edict would be all titles sharing the same universe, would be rebooted, hard, every 7-12 years. When you give something an end date, it colors everything.
You have a chance for truly affecting, long form storytelling in which events have a substantial affect on characters.
And if a particular plot choice doesn't fully work- you learn from it and don't use it in the reboot.
Old fans probably wouldn't care for this approach- but the alternative is all this ridiculous, congested continuity that prevents new readers from hopping on, and makes substantive change and growth impossible.
7-12 years is also enough to age the character in real time and have him still be somewhat viable as an action hero (or age him just enough that his decreasing abilities create even more story potential).


Getting back to the new film though- I was kind of bullish about this one earlier, but the last few clips I've been seeing aren't doing it for me. Garfields Parker seems like a punkish A-hole to me from all these scenes. Won't write it off just yet. I do think it will be more popular than many are anticipating- and the 3D can be a showstopper, especially for the many opportunities to induce vertigo. But the original misgivings (primarily from this being a more heavily Ultimate influenced series now) are starting to come back to where I'm just not as eager to see it as I was a few weeks back.

I had read about the Sins Past story and was hoping it was an "alternate universe" kind event. Very stupid to try something like that IMO. If they even mention Gwen going to Paris for any reason in this movie, I think that's reason enough to abandon all hope in this reboot. What exactly was it that happened in OMD? I haven't followed Spider-Man comics for a while.

FWIW, I see this entry in the Spidey series as being similar to whenever Marvel puts out a #1 issue that's doing an alternate take on a familiar story. How many times has Superman had a re-boot? This can be seen as something similar to an "Ultimate" universe.

OMD was the answer to fixing Spidey's problem from Civil War. He revealed his identity on TV. To be part of the Registration Act. Now...I liked Civil War. I did. It made sense that at some poiint. Government would want a control on these superheroes. But Spidey doing that? Stupid. It just killed a major part of who he was in an integral fashion.

OMD had Aunt May shot and dying. Spidey makes a deal w/ Mephisto to make everyone forget who he was under the mask. And then the year after that was trying to fix what OMD did. I think Spidey is back to the status quo now.

OMD essentially started with Marvel's Civil War in which the Superhuman Registration Act was passed which required all superhumans to register their identity and powers with the federal government. Spider-Man revealed that he is Peter Parker on live television.

Then Kingpin sent a sniper assassin to kill Peter at his home. Of course his spider-sense warned him to dodge the bullet, but Aunt May was in the path and she got shot instead. All of the greatest geniuses, such as Tony Stark and Reed Richards, could do nothing to save her.

So that leads into One More Day.

What did Spidey do? He made a deal with freaking Mephisto. Mephisto is essentially the devil in the Marvel universe, so he essentially made a deal with the devil to save Aunt May's life. The deal was that he would trade his marriage, and Mephisto would make it so that the marriage never happened at all, and in exchange Mephisto would restore Aunt May and also wipe out the knowledge of Spidey's secret identity from everyone so that essentially he never revealed his identity on live tv.

There was just so much wrong with OMD. First, Spidey would never never never make a deal with the devil no matter what. That is just so completely against his character. "With great power comes great responsibility..." Uncle Ben would be rolling in his grave. Instead of actually taking responsibility for his actions of revealing his identity to the world, he decides to take the easy way out. It also effectively erases 20 years of Spidey history because Mephisto didn't just undo the marriage, he made it so that it never happened in the first place. So Peter and MJ were never married at all period.

Later, Joe Quesada wrote "One Moment in Time" which revealed what actually happened on the day they were supposed to have been married. A fat guy fell on top of Spidey and knocked him out, causing him to miss his own wedding. I'm not even joking about that. Spidey, a guy who can withstand punches from the likes of Green Goblin and Doc Ock, is knocked unconscious when a regular ol' fat guy falls on him.

Every time I think about this movie, I just let out a sigh and shake my head. Why are the trailers so underwhelming? Why does the lizard look like a green turd? Give him a fucking snout, assholes!! Why do all the web slinging scenes take place in the dark? Or at least it looks like that from the trailers. Why do we need to see the origin again after only ten years? Couldn't we just James Bond this shit and have a nee actor but just have Spiderman being Spiderman already? Why does Spiderman's origin contain a deep dark secret within it now? I actually Andrew Garfield seems like he could be a good Spiderman but I have a strong feeling he's stuck with a shit movie. Just please, if the movie underperforms, don't do the origin again! Shit.

A lot of those have already been answered. Lizard doesn't have a snout because the design is based on the original Steve Ditko Lizard. Web-slinging at night I speculate is trying to be more "realistic" in the regard that criminals are more active at night, and also Peter is in school during the day anyway. Spider-Man's origin has always contained a deep dark secret. His parents were originally CIA spies in the comics. The change to scientist in the movie is actually an improvement in my opinion. It better explains why Peter is naturally gifted in science... like father like son.


The Secret Invasion storyarc was written a year after One More Day, and in Secret Invasion it was revealed that several people had been secretly replaced by Skrulls over the last few years. I had really really really hoped that it would have revealed Aunt May as a Skrull, so that way Peter would have traded his marriage not for his actual aunt but rather a freaking Skrull.

Also I don't mind the change to his face. Like it was said..it's the Ditko design. I do mind that we have a naked Lizard. Cuz you know..he's naked..and his penis is missing. I'm sorry...I don't mind that I go all superhuman Lizard. But the moment this change takes way body parts. yeah. I might fucking mind a bit.
