That trailer rocked. Everyone I know who isn't on these boards thought it rocked. And Speed Racer was great.

It did "rock," I suppose. It might be an entertaining film, I won't argue that. But a good film? It certainly doesn't look that way. Cera also needs a damn haircut. His hair being that huge looks even worse than normal.

I've never heard of the book before, so this is all new to me. Trailer looked decent, but Michael Cera going around fighting guys doesn't really appeal to me. I like the cool comic book effects, but i'll probably need to see more reviews and spots.
What the hell does Speed Racer have to do with this? (which by the way was pretty decent)

I haven't read the books either, but the trailer reminded me of The Spirit and that is not a good thing. When a movie needs to put onomatopoeia, it usually tends to fall on the campy side. Is Scott Pilgrim campy?

I take "campy" to mean "deliberately dumb", and while there are certainly plenty of strange and goofy things going on in Scott Pilgrim, it's hardly ever dumb. (Some people think a couple of things like the Vegan Police trot down that road, but I'm not one of them.)

There's a lot of cartoonish exaggeration, but I wouldn't call it campy. It's basically a really well-written relationship book littered with characters with a surprising amount of depth, but they just happen to live in a very videogame-like version of Toronto (complete with extra lives, extradimensional warp tunnels, bad guys that turn into change, vegan superpowers, etc.). The series is probably best known for all the random geeky references -- semiobscure games, very specific comic book arcs...things like that -- and the surreal, over-the-top fight sequences, but those don't overwhelm the books. It really is a character piece first.
Thanks for the brief summary. It's kind of what I've heard. Still, is the use of visual onomatopoeia necessary? To me, it takes away from the story and makes it too cartoonish.

I can't imagine anyone who has never read the OGNs liking this movie and I understand why they would be like WTF? It has to be a really silly looking movie if you've never heard of the books.
Fortunately, I've been pluggin' those books since the first one came out on these boards and I'm not on the trendly bandwagon that hates Cera so I am still super excited for this. O'Malley was constantly hanging out with the cast and crew & Wright during filming so this seems to be definitely one of the most faithful comic book adaptations ever done. Looks like they did a great job with the boyfriends.

I've never read the OGNs and I'm in. I believe in Wright's directing. The look of the trailer appeals to me. I don't mind the "whoosh" and etc. I like it.

About 2-3 times per year I see a trailer that gets me genuinely excited about the prospects of an upcoming movie. Even though that excitement ends up being unfounded more often than not, I did have that reaction to this trailer. FWIW, I had never even heard of the OGNs before today.

$8.63 each at Amazon! Buy them all. The series starts off well enough but gets indescribably amazing with vol. 2, and they get even better and better from there. Definitely stick with it at least through the second volume in case the first one doesn't do much for you.

Some of my friends went to a public-only test screening tonight and loved it. I tried to see it too but someone from the studio recognized me and wouldn't let me in. Sucked.

because a studio publicist I work with knew who I was? Yeah I felt really cool. Especially when I was told I couldn't go in while my friends made it through. Anyhow, the point of my post was three of my huge movie fan friends thought the film was amazing.

Caught a screening of it the other night and I thought it was great.. well, minus one aspect. Over all, the effects were awesome and it did stay pretty close to the book.. well, the books that are out now. No idea for vol 6.

The preview doesn't have me too excited, but I love Wright so will check this out.
I'm also praying for Joss Whedon to remake Blade Runner with Michael Cera soon, just for the Scanners moments that would take place on this board.

I get the Speed Racer feel as well. The reason for the comparison may be it's a film that tries to stick with the look and feel of it's source material.
I haven't read the OGNs but I can assume the look of the charactors clothes etc and the words stick to what was on the printed page.
I like Speed Racer as well and think the hatred is a little OTT.
I will see this as Chris Evens seems to be on a roll at the moment (he was pretty good in Push, and that is saying something!).
Still not quite sure on Cera.
