EMPIRE: News On The Dark Knight Rises

Spoiler:
Let's hear from director Christopher Nolan first, and see what he'll divulge about the film. "It's really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne's story. We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after The Dark Knight. So he's an older Bruce Wayne; he's not in a great state.

"With Bane, we're looking to give Batman a challenge he hasn't had before. With our choice of villain and with our choice of story we're testing Batman both physically as well as mentally."

Speaking of physical challenges, what can Tom Hardy tell us about Bane? "He's brutal. Brutal. He's a big dude who's incredibly clinical, in the fact that he has a result-based and oriented fighting style. It's not about fighting. It's about carnage. The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it's nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action."

Costume designer Lindy Hemming also lets drop a few clues to his backstory as she talks about Bane's look. On the mask, she says, "He was injured early in his story. He's suffering from pain and needs gas to survive. He can't survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at his back, where there are two cannisters."

holy shit...that's a good while after the last one storywise. Jesus. It just made it very interesting now considering it makes you wonder wtf Gotham has been through since TDK.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises (Nolan)

They could easily have used that as an excuse to change the suit but they (smartly) opted not to. It would've been too easy from a cash-in standpoint rather than a story-based one.

Begins had a 7-year gap in its story from when Wayne left on his journey to when he returned and became the Batman, and it's been 7 years since that film came out, since TDK took place some six months or so after that.

Looking at it that way it's not much of a stretch, but they obviously have to explain what became of the "five dead, two of them cops, you can't sweep that up" and eventual hunting down we were hearing of at the end of TDK.

I guess the goddamned Batman got parole.

Spoiler:
So 1-2 years between Begins and Dark Knight and 8 years between Dark Knight and Rises, so he has been Batman for roughly a decade without a Robin? Boo!!

I also like how they say he is an older Batman, not in a great shape anymore. They make it sound like he is 50+ years old, but he is only early 30s.

If they could somehow bring in Henry Winkler as Ambush Bug, this movie would beyond rule.

"he's not in a great state". That has nothing to do with his body but rather his psyche. And he became thirty in BB so he's around 38 now. You couldn't even get that detail right. -ohbfrank-

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! And then he could go "bug" EmoSuperman!

And he would still be less ridiculous than that Bane mask.

Interesting.

Spoiler:
The large time gap has me wondering if we might get some references to other foes he might have faced in that time frame? Maybe a mention of Penguin, Riddler, or even Joker, who I am sure escaped Arkham a few times during that period. Also makes me wonder if Catwoman will have been in action for some time when the movie starts as well.

Has Batman been in hiding all this time? I figure he's still been fighting crime over the years but has maintained a much lower profile.

Also, somebody who has been fighting for that long is like a HB in the NFL. While they might still be relatively young, the toll it takes (both mentally and physically) makes them feel a lot older.

Some people....just get too excited...and don't read it right the first time. I do wonder though...it's beena good long time...I'm assuming others have been brought up and taken down by Batman? One could at least assume that...cuz...it'd be cool to know that that world continued w/ it's issues and we're just dropping in at this point.

Spoiler:
Where was it stated in Begins that Bruce is 30? I don't recall it. I had always assumed he was 25 like in the Year One comics, which is where Begins drew its inspiration, and that would make him at most 33-35 in Rises depending on how much time passed between the first two movies.

DonnachaOne 11-21-11 06:53 PM

Re: The Dark Knight Rises (Nolan)

While I don't recall them saying Bruce's age, your assumption that he is 25 is just that, an assumption. Citing Batman: Year One is irrelevant because Batman Begins is not explicitly based on one particular prexisting Batman story.

Based on what we see in Begins, however, he knocks around the world for a good few years after college, and then involves himself with the League of Shadows for another undisclosed time. It stands to reason that when he returns to Gotham that he's closer to 30.

Furthermore, and I wouldn't really count this since it's not seen or heard in the film, but the script has Bruce aged 28 when he's in prison in Asia.

Long story short, he's not old, he's just worn out, worn down.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises (Nolan)

They celebrated Bruce's 30th birthday just prior to the assault on Wayne Manor. He would have gained control of Wayne Enterprises once he became 30. That's why Mr. Earle was in such a rush to liquidate Bruce's majority shareholdings by having him declared dead.

Which goes along with Bane's first story arch in Knightfall. Batman was worn out, and Bane came in for the final fight.
