Have you seen him in anything other than Mad Men? He was hilarious on SNL as well as a bit as a cable guy on "The Sarah Silverman Show".

I disagree. With Batman & Iron Man, sure that is true, but the "flying, shooting fire and lasers and all this other stuff" is exactly what people want with Superman.

I've seen other people make this assertion too, but it's always been interesting to me to see how a being that's basically a God has to reconcile that fact with living as a Human.

Problem is that for a film there's so little to put up and harm him directly. It's always the people he has to protect is where the drama is. Unfortunately...we see too much of it and not enough of Supes getting his ass kicked by someone who could take a punch from him. I'd welcome a Brainiac or Darkside plot with the same tone brought in the Animated Series where it made sense. THOUGH with Darkside you're going to have to explain it pretty well. Or just get Doomsday to kick his ass and explain his existence somehow. We just don't get enough Aliens in his movies. I'm tired of seeing Supes having to save Lois all the time. It gets boring. Make it a world event where he has to protect the damn planet from a threat that nobody but him and him alone can do.

In all that I don't mind Kent doing his Daily Planet thing, it's what he is and a thing we love about him. Make Lois the girl he likes but can't reveal himself too JUST yet. And for the love of Christ delete the kid. Just reboot it. Nobody that saw Superman Returns and it being their 1st intro knew his origins. He's from Krypton and all that but...when you're being told that instead of shown (the Returns intro doesn't count) it kinda kills the impact of what he is. Again use the Animated Series as a template. It's damn full of what everyone loves of the Character and his world.

last thing: Superman is the ultimate boy scout. Make him talk and be an all American type of guy. It's his thing.

I never viewed Superman as the "ultimate boy scout". I view him more as the Heisman-winning, All-American QB -- strong, confident, assured, natural leader -- who happens to be the nicest guy in the world so you can't really hate him for being so damn perfect. The way Reeve played him (the confidence and command he displayed when confronting Luthor in his subterranean hideout, for example).

Doesn't mean there can't be conflict, both internal (being the "ultimate outsider", removed from humanity yet emblematic of their best qualities) and external (a bigger, badder threat that almost (but never) defeats him and destroy the Earth etc.), but the core of the character cannot become corrupted or the filmmakers have already lost. (Superman leaving Earth for five years, Superman becoming a deadbeat Dad, Superman spying on Lois Lane's private conversations... oh wait...)

I get the sneaking suspicion that many (not all, but many) of those who INSIST "No Routh, No Sale" are continuity obsessive. I remember when the Burton Superman flick was getting off the ground in 1997, all over Usenet the obsessive types were insisting that it "HAD to be DEAN CAIN" because, in essence, he was the only Superman the public (read: Usenet nerds) could embrace/accept.

They need to add hair to his receding hairline.

This guy does not make a good Superman, maybe a 50+ Superman.

If they don't pick Routh it will be a big mistake. How can you not take an actor that looks so much like Clark Kent and Superman? When he was younger students called him Superman.

Give Routh another chance and make him throw some punches on the big screen, no love story.

There has been 4 actors playing Batman on the big screen in the past 21 years, the audience really doesn't care as long as the movie is good and entertaining.

Jon Hamm would make a great Lex.

If he were to beef up (and if he were taller), I think Matthew Bomer would make a great Superman.

He was actually in the running during the McG/Brett Ratner years right? I wouldn't mind him.

The dude is 38 years old. He perfectly fits the age that Superman is typically at in the comics.

Yes, Bomer was Ratners first choice, but then the studio wanted to cast a star (I think Brendan Fraser) in the role. Ratner eventually left the project like many before him. I wouldn't mind seeing Bomer in the role. I guess the whole thing with Routh was the fact that he looked and acted so much like Christopher Reeve, whom many think personified of the role. I still think he's a good choice next to Welling, but that's me.

I think the ideal choices for Luthor have already played him in one way or another. I think that Jon Hamm, Chris Noth, and Clancy Brown could all own the role in a live-action movie. Hamm has already played the character for comedic purposes, but he was 100% believable.

I wish they could do something like they did with the original in 1978; make something that is a two movie story. They should have one movie in which to re-familiarize everyone with the characters past, have him encounter a strong foe, and above all else, make it clear that Luthor is linked to this foe, but remains unbeaten at the end of it all. That was one thing that some of the 90s comics and animated series did that I thought made the story interesting. Superman had all the powers in the world, but Luthor was so slick that Superman could never find a way to beat him "by the book." The fact that Superman refuses to take the Batman style approach is what always winds up being his major defect when it comes to Luthor.

I never knew Ratner wanted Bomer in the role. I'd actually like to see Bomer get cast as he has the charisma such an iconic figure needs.

I liked Routh despite the fact they gave him nothing to work with. After he landed the plane and stopped the runaway car, he felt like Superman. Sadly, his best Clark scene (when he finds out Ma Kent and Ben Hubbard are dating) was cut. The movie needed moments like that instead of a sullen stalker Superman.

But Superman in the comics ages much like Bart Simpson, so how why would you want to cast someone in their late 30's that is supposed to carry a franchise over a number of years?

And also sadly his best transformation was the elevator scene. They should have shown him in the beginning changing to Superman to capture that feel the way Superman II did when Reeves went through the alley and changed.

Lets be realistic: we're talking 2, maybe 3 movies tops, if they work. Michael Keaton was *THIRTY SEVEN* when he was cast in Batman, 40 in the sequel. No problem there.

You don't know what you're talking about. Jon Hamm is one of the nicest guys on the planet. Hell, he's so down to earth that he helped me set up lights at Sundance. And we asked him about playing Superman. His words: "It's a tricky road to go down with some of those heroes, because they're not flawed. Superman is Superman — he's invincible, so where's the drama?"

Yeah but....Batman wasn't exactly physical in those films. Still love them. Keaton was a cool Batman. Really brought the brooding well.

Stuntmen do the majority of the "phyiscal" work. You need a seasoned actor with charisma and presence to sell your film.

And as an aside, if you think someone in their late 30s or even mid 40s can't be physical, check out Michael Jai White in "Black Dynamite". The dude is like 44 and has the athleticism and asskickery of someone half his age.
