Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012
Just a bump for this tidbit. Rick McCallum was interviewed here and had this tidbit:
So if TPM does badly, or not enough to cover costs and make a profit I suppose, we get nothing else.
"We’re doing 3D versions of all six films, one a year, starting in February of next year. We start with [episode] one and go all the way through six, totally chronological," he said. But the first one is a somewhat of a test. "One a year, if they work. If they don’t, then there will be just one [episode converted to 3D]."

I'm a person who just doesn't like 3d. The only possible way I could be on board with this is if episode IV is fixed back to the correct Han shooting first version.

With reduced box office numbers for 3D shows this summer (Pirates 4 and Kung Fu Panda 2 had lower 3D ticket sales than expected), I think we're in the slow downhill phase of the 3D phenomenon.
I have a feeling that the Star Wars conversions will be late to the party and nobody will really care. Given they're starting with The Phantom Menace, that might not attract most older, cynical Star Wars fans like myself, but it could be a boom for younger kids and parents.
So, in conclusion I have no idea what will happen!

I'd rather Lucas finance turning this into a theatrical feature:

Yeah...the cinematics they've been showing for a while for this game literally contain better direction than all of the prequels.
This was the one 1st one they released..was really solid work. A bit too much but it was pretty good.

Those game trailers make me want to cry. If Lucas released an animated film of that caliber, it would be a game changer almost on the level of the original Star Wars.
Of course, those are basically what the prequels should have been in the first place. The main villan is what Darth Vader should have looked like by the end of the second film.

Still think its stupid that this is set 1000s of years before the movies & the tech looks the same. Clone armor, Star Destroyers & destroyer droids. Think up new tech.

I think the problem is that, although it's set thousands of years in the past, it still has to be recognizably Star Wars, or at least they think it does.

at hanging the future of the other 5 films on how well The Phantom Menace is received. Looks like this project might be one-and-done.

Not necessarily. It could be simply that he thinks if he does the OT first, no one will come out to see the prequels. By doing it this way--and emphasizing that each film's performance will determine whether the series continues--he's basically told OT fans that if they want to see their favorite movies in 3D, they need to pay to see the prequels. Granted, I have no idea why OT devotees would even want to see their beloved trilogy further tampered with in 3D, but it's a reasonable business scheme.
