I wouldn't sit thru The Phantom Menace again if it was shot in 4-D, and that 4th D was a handjob by Natalie Portman.

I dunno, I'm dying for a MST3K in 3D added to this. I think that will be the only thing that would bring me back to this.

I'd probably consider this if it were offered.

Do we not want Star Wars in 3D at all, or do we just not want to sit through the prequels before we get to the originals?

Post 1187. Very clever

I don't want Star Wars in 3D at all. I like OAR and Original Dimensionality.

If it wasn't filmed in 3D it's an alteration.

I don't feel entitled to pass judgment on what other people enjoy, and in this case it's not a studio tinkering with the work of an auteur. It's Lucas himself playing with his own work, so I don't see any artistic violation. I just personally have no interest in 3D movies.

So if TPM is crap and 3D is crap and two negatives equal a positive, then TPM3D = best movie of 2012?

I wonder if there are other directors out there that want to tweak their past work but they don't risk their reputation on it.

I'm still stunned that Warner Bros. was willing to spend money for Richard Donner to go back and recut Superman II. That showed a tremendous concession toward the artistic side of commercial films, I though. Warner didn't have to do that; Superman II has always been held in high regard by fans, and they could have just made money off rereleasing the theatrical version.

By and large, though, it's always been my understanding that directors are either there to oversee the production of a movie, in which case they're punching the clock and cashing the check, or they're auteurs who would not subject themselves to the self-torture of endless revision.

Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012

When will people realize movies released in "3D" are not actually 3D? They create different planes and depths of focus for the image, causing eyestrain and confusion to our sensory system.

We already perceive three dimensions in 2D images.

I'm tired of this whole 3D phenomenon, but I'm especially tired of bad movies being released in 3D and consumers being convinced the movie is somehow enhanced.

I'd rather watch the steam rise off a fresh turd than see another 3D movie.

I'm pretty sure people realize that it's a manipulated image that doesn't operate the same way anything else in life does.

Ah, but we should be careful. Just because a film is released in 3D does not make it a bad movie. The last two Pixar releases were among their strongest, and they were 3D. Dislike the format, but do not make the mistake of conflating the gimmick with the movie. Sure, a lot of the movies released in 3D have been mediocre--but there have been plenty of mediocre "regular" movies in the last few years as well.

to who? You, maybe. Out of the very few films I've seen in 3D. I've never had eyestrain or become confused by the image entering my vision. Man up, sir. As long as the movie isn't bad...I shall not feel pain. Now...if I saw this...my brain would hurt...not from the 3D. It's cuz the movie is shit.

Agreed. For me, AOTC is the worst SW film.

Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012

I'm not a big enough fan of the prequels to bother seeing any of them in 3D, and as much as I love the OT, I can't see myself dropping $15/ea. to see them in 3D, either.

So, a big pass all around. I'll just enjoy them on Blu-ray instead.

I like the stuff with Christopher Lee as Dooku, Anakin's hunt on Tatooine and the entire battle on Geonosis. The rest of the movie largely bores me. I like enough of it that I don't dislike the movie, but I'd agree that it's probably the weakest of the lot.

Can't wait to see Jar Jar's prehensile tongue in 3D.

Lucas is a genius.

Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012

I've soured on the prequels over time. There's a lot of things about the prequels I like. But there's even more I don't like. But I never tire of the original three. Show me the original three in 3D and I'm there.

But let's not kid ourselves. Lucas will make gobs of money on this regardless.
