Re: UHD release announcements
Moon is getting a 10th anniversary UHD BD release on July 16th.
Newly in 4K with HDR and remixed with Dolby Atmos audio, the film is also stuffed with bonus features including new deleted scenes, a poster gallery, commentaries, Q&As, and Jones’ short film Whistle. There’s also a brand new retrospective conversation with Jones where he talks about getting the film off the ground.

^ Nice! I'll definitely grab that. Reminds me that Gravity is wayyyyyyyyyyy overdue as well.

I can't believe Moon is already ten years old. Time does fly.

I had the same thought. It was a great blind buy that I didn’t think I bought that long ago, but my Blu-ray.com profile confirms I added it the week of release. Was due for a rewatch which I’ll wait for the 4K to do.

Update on Hannibal's performance and what the near-future of UHD BD (or, well, lack of it) looks to hold for KLSC:
It['s] doing well, Best Buy will be carrying it in most of their key stores.
At this point, we have the UHD rights to a couple of dozen titles, but none of them will most likely make the cut. We are looking into releasing the Leone/Eastwood trilogy, doing some tests and getting some quotes.

Re: UHD release announcements
I suspect that a lot of the titles they can release just aren’t that compelling, at least for the wider UHD audience.
When Kino was teasing what would ultimately be Valkyrie, noting that it was an MGM title from the ‘90s/‘00s, a bunch of folks scoured their release slate from back then. After subtracting the Bonds, co-productions that MGM doesn’t have video rights for, and titles already licensed to other labels, MGM didn’t have much to get excited about. The remake of The Thomas Crown Affair was about the best thing we could’ve hoped for. (I assumed it’d be a pre-DI title, so Valkyrie admittedly didn’t occur to me.)
It does unfortunately seem near-term that UHD BD is going to be some percentage of new theatrical releases, prominent titles celebrating a milestone anniversary or tying into a remake/sequel, and stone-cold classics they’ve consistently proven to sell well.

Yeah. It's unfortunate, but I get it.
I wish Lost Highway would have made the UHD cut, though. It's a damn shame that it didn't, considering it hasn't had a proper North America Blu-ray release until Kino announced it a few weeks ago. I think, in that particular case, maybe a UHD release would have garnered some extra hype... but who knows.

Re: UHD release announcements
I agree. From the sound of things, they were handed an existing master for Lost Highway rather than remastering it themselves, so I’m not sure if 4K would’ve been in the cards there, as much as I would’ve loved to have seen that.

Re: UHD release announcements
I'm not sure the economics of licensing movies from other studios is viable for the current UHD marketplace. Unless a studio is willing to license a movie out for peanuts, the market may not be big enough to support anything but the absolute biggest sellers.
This is a problem because the large studios really don't have much interest in supporting physical media themselves.

Re: UHD release announcements
...or if the UHD rights are included with the DVD/Blu-ray license, which seems to be the case for MGM (since it’s not as if they’re releasing any UHD BDs themselves).
Although I guess I’m really just talking about the U.S. here. European labels seem to be more adventurous, and thankfully, we don’t have to worry about region coding!

Best Buy has a page up for The Shining set for Oct 1. There is a listing for a regular release and a steelbook which is linked above. The steelbook art is so ugly that the Batman UHD's are even laughing at it.

Re: UHD release announcements
This was such a small time film I'm surprised it's getting the UHD treatment when there are award winning films that haven't had a decent release yet. I did see this when it came out. I think all I remember is the guy sitting on the toilet when the monster made an appearance.

Re: UHD release announcements
This is a very independent UHD release as well; the comments in that Dawn of the Discs Facebook post suggests it's being self-released by Charles B. Pierce's daughter. It's not getting a release at the expense of another film. But if it takes off, maybe Bootleggers will follow afterwards. (Pierce's daughter was assigned copyright of that as well.)
