Cool, it feels like we're getting a lot of big catalog releases lately. Even if they are only the first movies in a franchise. AKA the good ones?

Re: UHD release announcements
No doubt, I could convince myself to buy them if they were a straight up 2 in 1 combo (even 4k discs only), but that packaging makes it a pass for sure. There appears to be a German steelbook for both titles in 4k floating around but it keeps disappearing from the site. That to me would probably be the best way to go.

Re: UHD release announcements
I love the first one, the 2nd one is popcorn fun at certain times I'm in the mood. I could live without them. I hope they get repackaged. These studios come up with the silliest shit all the time. They need to keep movies looking simple in their little cases. Stop with this special packaging crap that accumulates dust. Jesus.

Stanley Kubrick's dazzling, Academy Award-winning achievement is a compelling drama of man vs. machine, a stunning meld of music and motion. Kubrick (who co-wrote the screenplay with Arthur C. Clarke) first visits our prehistoric ape-ancestry past, then leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever) into colonized space, and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) into uncharted space, perhaps even into immortality. "Open the pod bay doors, HAL." Let an awesome journey unlike any other begin.
Special Features:
- Commentary by Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood
- Channel Four Documentary 2001: The Making of a Myth
4 Insightful Featurettes:
- Standing on the Shoulders of Kubrick: The Legacy of 2001
- Vision of a Future Passed: The Prophecy of 2001
- 2001: A Space Odyssey - A Look Behind the Future

This gets me right here:
"leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever)"
FWIW, when I first saw this decades ago, it took my breath away.
IMO, it is one of the greatest moments of cinematic art in history.
You are wise, sir.
Buying it is a no-brainer and belongs in every film fan's library.

Re: UHD release announcements
some other tech news regarding '2001'
from the press release:
“For the first time since the original release, new 70mm prints were struck from pristine printing elements made from the original camera negative. A longtime admirer of the late American auteur, Christopher Nolan worked closely with the team at Warner Bros. Pictures throughout the mastering process.
Building on the work done for the new 70mm prints, the 4K UHD with HDR presentation was mastered from the 65mm original camera negative. The 4K UHD also includes both a remixed and restored 5.1 DTS-HD master audio track, as well as the original 1968 6-track theatrical audio mix (formatted for 5.1 DTS-HD master audio).”
this is also written up in this news release, but unconfirmed if true:

The 4K UHD Blu-ray disc of 2001: A Space Odyssey will feature Dolby VisionTM HDR that dramatically expands the color palette and contrast range and uses dynamic metadata to automatically optimize the picture for every screen, frame by frame.

WB Shop says 10/2/18, but the press release says 10/30/18. I'm not familiar with WB Shop ever getting anything early... what's the story here?

Re: UHD release announcements
I do wonder if WB will also be dumping some of Kubrick's other titles out that same month. If my memory is correct they have a history of releasing them around the same time.
Still 2001 in 4K ....

Re: UHD release announcements
Kino will be getting into UHD BD soon. An as-yet-unannounced MGM title (previously released on Blu-ray by Fox/MGM) is coming in October -- from a 4K remaster they're tackling themselves -- and will be among their first UHD BDs. It's not any of the Dollars trilogy, which seems to be coming in a trilogy boxset in 2019.
Supposedly, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich (of all things!) is hitting UHD BD on Sept. 25th.
Also in "wait, what?" announcements:
