I just finished final chapter and it's another winner. Man, they restored the mono soundtracks they sound even better than the 5.1 tracks.

What a glorious transfer and the 5.1 was booming on the unrated first. Just FYI: but defaults to 2.0. Looked great and that Manfredini score is amazing. Great movie towards the end. Palmer killed it. Literally and figuratively. Like watching for first time. Can’t wait to dig into extras.

Wow, you're the only person that I've read actually likes the 5.1 tracks. They're weak compared to the mono tracks. In fact, the first four films all have restored mono soundtracks that bury the 5.1 mixes. I watched the first four over the weekend.

Re: Friday The 13th BR Box Set in the works.

I've only watched Part 2 out of this set but am about halfway through Part 3.

Is the 2-D transfer for the latter supposed be ridiculously soft in some areas? I notice the softness pops up occasionally but more so when there is a 3-D effect setup to happen.

Outside that, the 2-D transfer is definitely a step up when it comes to detail alone.

I mean, is it really so hard to send some check discs to 3 or 4 super-fan sites and let them marinate with them for a week or so, and get the feedback that would hopefully catch things like this before production?

Not when Shout wanted to get this out before Halloween.

Yes. The previously released Blu-ray was an oversharpened mess, IMO.

I agree the mono is louder sonically, but the 5.1 was still loud, but more even through the channels. More dispersed I guess. The mono was just loud on front speakers, but I like the balance that the 5.1 provides.

Re: Friday The 13th BR Box Set in the works.

Well I started with the New Line movies first. It's kind of disappointing FvJ and the remake are just the previous discs. I didn't really notice the problems of Jason X and Jason Goes to Hell except the audio seemed soft in a few places.

Re: Friday The 13th BR Box Set in the works.

I got a reply back from the email I sent about the disc replacement program as I had trouble uploading a picture of the receipt. It said they received my request and it'll ship on or before November 23rd.

Re: Friday The 13th BR Box Set in the works.

Part 3 has never looked really good picture quality-wise in 3D or 2D. It was shot with the left and right eye views on top of each other in one conventional frame, then projected with a special projector lens to combine them polarized on the screen in a 2.35 ratio with about half the resolution of an anamorphic scope image. Drive-ins could not show 3D so traditional 2D prints were made for them in anamorphic format- the older video transfers were panned and scanned from those (the oval-shaped changeover cues show up in them.)

4K TVs with 3D can't show a 4K resolution image in 3D, but they do use the extra resolution for passive 3D without the obvious "scan lines" that the first-generation passive sets had. It's really an incredible technology and far more impressive than any 2D 4K picture I've seen on it so far. Shame on LG for dropping it just because it wasn't the next big thing- they didn't even do anything to promote the improved 3D picture on these TVs, I only heard about it through word of mouth.

Re: Friday The 13th BR Box Set in the works.

Hot fucking damn. Great set and 3D gets 4.5. Best video out of any of the movies reviewed, I believe. NM: many got 4.5 in video.
Maybe not unrated 1, think got 4.5 as well. Either way, what a fucking set. 2 and 3D def this weekend! And one of my all-time favorite guilty pleasure movies seems most new extras of all, Jason X. Kane Hodder best Jason imo. Fucking newly loaded and fresh new paint job to boot! Can’t wait to get into all!!!

I unironically enjoy Jason X. It's the best horror-icon-goes-to-space sequel.

I never have understood the hate for it. It is dumb fun and tongue is firmly in cheek the entire time.

I can only guess that many Friday The 13th fans want(ed) a true horror movie and instead got one where it is making fun of the franchise than taking it seriously. But by that point, reboots weren't the thing and it appeared the filmmakers just wanted to have some fun with it.

I am not a Kane Hodder as Jason fan, but his performance actually works here because everything is so over the top (even more so than usual).

Not a very high bar in terms of best horror icon goes to space, but I agree. The movie knows very well what it is and doesn’t try and hide that fact.

Out of curiosity, which other horror-icon-goes-to-space movies do you all like? I unironically love Leprechaun 4 for largely the same reasons as Jason X, both of which I've seen more times than I'd care to count. I dug Critters 4 at the time but haven't seen it since the early '90s, so for all I know, I'd hate it now. (I keep meaning to get Scream Factory's Critters collection but haven't bitten yet.) And, tragically, I've never seen Hellraiser: Bloodline.

I think Hellraiser: Bloodline is at least an interesting movie. Not perfect but kind of watchable.

Re: Friday The 13th BR Box Set in the works.

Hellraiser: Bloodline would have worked better as two separate movies; one set in the eighteenth century, and one set in the twenty-second century.

Just look at Event Horizon to see how awesome "Hellraiser in Space" could have been.

I directed Hellraiser Bloodline! And it was my first movie in Dolby Digital.

I'm watching part 3 right now and I'll say its a slight improvement but it still looks like shit if you aren't watching the movie in 3D.

Leprechaun 4 is easily the best sequel in that franchise.

I like the 3rd Leprechaun movie in Las Vegas but the 4th movie is a ton of fun too.

I like Hellraiser: Bloodline but having seen the Workprint Version, I agree that it should have been split into two separate films.

Event Horizon is still the best Non-Hellraiser Hellraiser In Space film.

In terms of Horror Franchises in space, Jason X is still my absolute favorite.

The New Beginning commentary with Adam Green and Joe Lynch isn't as light hearted as their Final Chapter Commentary. It's taken from a podcast they recorded in 2018 but still very informative.

Speaking of commentaries, skip the new Jason X one, it is terrible.
