I had little problem with that type of BD release. Include the original DVD for its special features and give the movie space on BD.

That's exactly what's happening with 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases right now.

Heh. Sounds like the original intention of the Sony "Superbit" series of dvds.

Of the few Superbit titles I picked up over the past half-decade, it turns out Sony didn't really use that "extra space" on the dvd disc. It appears "Superbit" was mostly marketing, than any actual technical substance.

(More generally).

Sounds very much like typical "fandumb" type behavior in many genres/hobbies.

I'm not familiar with Taylor, but I can see genuine Les Pauls in good condition holding their value.

Most of my remaining guitars is stuff that hasn't really held their value at all. Such as copies of flying V, Warlock, etc ... which were "made in Japan" back in the day. (In those days, "made is Japan" was largely mediocre commodity oem type crap when it came to guitars).

My guitars were also heavily modified, with a different bridge and better pickups. If I were to sell my old guitars, probably the only selling point would be the modifications. The actual original underlying guitars would be largely worthless nowadays.

Ironically in that particular large trade ^, I got the original Battlestar Galactica complete epic series dvd set, which turned out to be one of the few dvds which had a lot of rewatch value. Just about everything else I have on dvd/bluray, I only watched once/twice or not at all.
(Elaborating).

In terms of actual rewatch value, there's only a few dvds/blurays which actually had a lot of rewatch value for me (besides the original Battlestar Galactica).

In the end, it turned out it was largely horrible stuff that I least expected such as:

- Sharknado 2 and 3
- Crank 1 and 2

I have no idea why I found these ^ titles so captivating, that I watched them over and over again. (Probably watched them over a hundred times already).

In the case of the original Battlestar Galactica, the only semi-plausible explanation I can think of offhand for watching it over and over again, is that it was the first non-cartoon show I latched onto when I was a kid/preteen. Around that same time, I was also reading a lot of stuff about space and the space program. This coincidence of events seems to have left a huge impression on me, which has lasted to this very day.

I can't think of anything else in my dvd/bluray collection which I have watched more than once or twice.

"Superbit" did utilize a higher bit-rate but visually-speaking, the difference was often not noticeable.

I would think using slightly higher bit-rates for Blu-ray and UHD would be even more difficult to detect.

Higher bitrates often helped on Blu-ray, though there were diminishing returns after a certain point.

Honestly, sometimes lower bitrate encodes can look better than higher bitrate encodes. It really depends on the encoder. An efficient encoder with a skilled compressionist at the helm can do more with less. Even with all the complaints about Scream Factory's authoring, for instance, insufficient bitrates weren't the problem there at all.

You can transfer a VHS tape recorded in SLP mode to a Blu-ray disc at 37mbps and it will still look like badly recorded SLP mode VHS tape.

All things being equal, a higher bit-rate should look better than a lower one but as you said a better encoder with a skilled compressionist can make a huge difference.

4K UHD sold 228,000 units as of June 24, which is maybe around $6 million total dollars.

Interestingly, the article also says blu-ray is up 3% this year in units and 6% in dollars. I assume that lumps together both flavors of blu...

That actualy seems pretty impressive considering how few 4K releases there are, and that the format has had little in the way of promotion.

And all 4K discs also come with standard Blu-Ray discs, so even those who buy them not knowing what they are will still at least have something to play. It's funny that so many Blu-Rays released the past few years have had regular DVDs with them after people had upgraded their equipment; they likely would have sold more in the beginning if they had done that then. (Working at Tower when they first came out, people did return them and HD-DVDs after realizing they would not play on their DVD players.)

I can't believe this still continues! I just bought two general release titles from 2016 and there they were, side-by-side DVDs. I have no use for these coasters. I list them on half.com and sometimes recoup $5.

I still like the idea of including the DVD. Our Bluray player is in the living room and if somebody is using the screen for a game, I can watch in the bedroom but only on my laptop.

I keep and watch them since I'm obsessive, but I trade the digital copy codes for other movies I don't have if I can (though I still keep the papers with them!)

Again, the average person doesn't give a shit about stuff like this.

But they do give a shit if they get it home and find out "Hey, I can't play this on my Bose system!" A LOT of people returned Super Audio CDs for the same reason; if all of them had been hybrid format then that wouldn't have been a problem, but they only did that with a few titles. But my point was it would've been more helpful to include DVDs with Blu-Rays the first few years they were out, instead of now.

I don't know anyone that even knew what SACD was (outside of audiophiles), so I don't buy it. That was a super niche along with DVD-Audio. That's a giant leap there.

I also appreciate it when there's a combo pack that includes a DVD and digital code.

(Working at Tower when they first came out, people did return them and HD-DVDs after realizing they would not play on their DVD players.)
Yeah, I think in the early high-definition days, the combos were only for new releases. Catalog BD titles that came with DVDs was a newer phenomenon.

Same. I have some titles on digital but a lot fewer than I have on physical media.

I think HD-DVD was the first to come out with the combo, which I thought was a good idea.

They were overpriced and there were some issues with the technical execution of pressing them but it gave people that versatility. It also cut down on the number of "This won't play in my DVD player" returns.

Does anyone else remember MGM releasing Blu-ray/DVD combos in a DVD-sized case? I don't think those lasted too long.
