ah...I can't open the link. I thought you meant people eating their words in the sense that it was good looking. *sigh* One day...we'll get a good BD of this...or maybe whatever the next format is we'll get the "perfect" version of the film.

Some people were claiming all the DNR talk was just non-sense.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm pretty sure the second sentence contradicts the first...

I'm pretty sure he was trying to claim that the new, DNRed version is better because of lack of grain. So he IS J6P. At least, that's how I understand that sentence.

I happened to check out the thread over on their forums about it. It is unanimous amongst their users that this blu-ray looks better. Even the dude that said "I hope they do not use DNR, that will kill the detail", says after the review is posted "The new one looks a lot better so I am going to pre-order in a couple of days."

And all they had to do was take the existing digital master and recompress with a high bit rate mpeg4 based codec and all would have been well. Instead some uneducated technician ruined art by applying expressionist digital processing. sigh.

That was definitely a dnr-friendly review...and I just sold the first release blu-ray of this classic just over a week ago. You can't assume anything whatsoever with a blu-ray release.
I'll await more "esteemed" reviews first before deciding what to do, but suspect I'll be repurchasing the first release. Sigh

Since there seems to be alot of people saying the DNR'd version sucks should I buy the 2-pack from wal-mart with The Terminator for $20 or is The Terminator not a good disc?

I think Lowry Digital (the folk who remastered the Bond films) is working on the remaster of The Terminator. Too bad Fox didn't hire them for Predator.

I really didn't think the original disc looked bad. Maybe it would have been better with AVC instead of MPEG-2, but otherwise it was pretty much what I was expecting from an 80s action movie shot in less-than-ideal conditions.

Glad I know I didn't make a mistake in keeping my current Blu-ray. Disappointed to know that the studio was stupid enough to release a DNR-ed to hell release of this classic action film.

Agreed. AVC MPEG-4 with the same transfer would have been the best release possible, IMHO. As it stands, I think the original release was fairly good. I'm so glad I held on to it after this edition was announced based on the recent reviews and horrendous screen-grabs. I have NEVER liked DNR. It is always a detractor, but this new Predator release just takes things too far, and it appears to ruin the release altogether.

I wish all studios would take a note from Bond remasters. Simply amazing work. I also wish there was some kind of standard or regulation that would be put in place to hold studios accountable.

bestbuy.com has it for $15 . I think I'd give it a shot for that amount. Comes with a ticket to predators right? I'm seeing that regardless.

Even Blu-ray.com gave the PQ a 2.0 and mentions the excessive DNR.
Jeff Kleist said (6/17/2010):
Of course, we all know how nutty those AVSer's are...but gees, looks like the screenshots once again don't lie. It's a turd.
Jeff Kleist said (6/17/2010):
Heavy, in regards to your Predator question, yes work was done on Predator, but Fox issued strict instructions that detail was not to be sacrificed to eliminate grain. You're also looking at a modern film scan rather than one that was done about 4 generations of scanner ago which certainly helps. Movie still doesn't look great though, but from the people who have seen it, it's..."better".

And my most trusted reviewer, Josh Z, has commented on AVS:
Curious to see if DVDTalk handles it (I hope for Adam or Supr). I think the 'other' reviewers should be getting the disc today or tomorrow, since Fox typically sends out titles very close to or on release day.
Unlike most here, I have already watched the disc. Or, at least, the first 20 minutes of it, which was all I could take.
The opening credits scene with the helicopters flying in and the team riding in jeeps is a wash. It looked like crap on the old Blu-ray (barely a DVD upscale level of detail), and it looks like a different form of crap here. There's no net gain or loss there.
However, for the rest of the movie after the titles, the actors definitely look like plastic on the new disc. When the action moves to the jungle, the folliage is so smeared that it looks like motion interpolation has been turned on or something.
The old disc is inconsistent, but looks like a grainy movie. The new one just looks weird and not at all like film. It's a travesty, IMO.
