Re: Predator: Ultimate Hunter Edition -- June 29, 2010

Predator 2 is a great guilty pleasure. Sure, it's dumb as dirt, but its datedness and over-the-top cheesiness are exactly what makes it watchable.

Then again, I have a soft spot for "near future" sci-fi movies, the more ridiculous their speculative future the better - especially if we've already passed the date the movie was set. At the time Predator 2 was released, it was set 7 years ahead to the future year of 1997. We're now 16 years on the other side of that, and looking back at its decidedly '80s fashion and hair styles is hugely entertaining to me.

Predators doesn't even succeed on that level. It just has nothing going for it.

The new 3D release comes out tomorrow and there are still no reviews.

Per the discussion over on blu-ray.com, the transfer seems to be the same DNR disaster as the UHE. Here's the comparison at caps-a-holic:

Great. The franchise is dead in the water, so this was probably the last shot we'll have at it ever getting properly remastered. Way to go Fox!

UGGGGGGGH. Fuck you, Fox. Fuck you to hell.

It's like we're HK now. We don't take care of our shit. At least HK had a good reason to not give a fuck. We dont'

Aargh. There were rumors that a new transfer was done, and I'm very disappointed to hear that's not the case.

As I recall, Bill Hunt claimed that a Fox rep "confirmed" that it was a new transfer. Apparently, either: 1) Hunt made that up, 2) the rep lied to his face, or 3) the rep was a PR lackey who had no clue what a "new transfer" actually is.

There were.

Tyler Foster rarely posts here now, but he was involved in a discussion over twitter with James Finn (EVP, Marketing Communications at Fox Home Entertainment). Tyler tried to be clear and sought confirmation that a new master was being used. Finn said yes.

He also said that a DVD inclusion was possible, but at the time they were planning to go with the 3D disc and throw in the Ultimate Hunter disc for the extras. Of course, they subtracted the UHE disc and added the DVD for the extras. Other regions fared better.

I picked up the 2007 BD in anticipation of this. Glad I did. Sounds like it's the best we'll get until the eventual 4K release in 5 years.

Jeez. So disappointed by this. I wish someone like Shout would get there hands on it to do a proper release.

Shout would just use whatever master Fox handed them. Some of their awful looking Universal-licensed films are proof of that.

Rented it on BR from the library after reading this, saw it for the first time in years. It's dated as hell, but it's from the days when these movies were proudly violent. The premise is cool, the film just doesn't exploit it well. Paxton is likeable as always, a few cool action scenes.

Art exists at the whim of money. It always has, and it always will. Sad, but true. Although given that Disney just bought Star Wars and Fox's rights will expire fairly soon, you'd think they'd put more effort into what franchises they actually had.

I wonder why Fox fouled it up so badly in the first place? You look at professionally released discs sometimes, and you just have to wonder.

It sounds like in this case, the fault is with the transfer rather than the materials.

I wish they'd spent the money fixing the transfer instead of putting together a 3-D version of a film which was never intended that way in the first place.

It's safe to say that aside from all the atrocities allowed in this world's nature...there is no motherfucking bearded white guy in the goddamn sky called God cuz obviously that motherfucker would fix Predator on BD. Also goes for Cameron fuck ups too. There is no God.
