re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

It's not confirmed (at least as far as I know) whether the french Leopard has the right aspect ratio or colour scheme.

As for Senso, I've seen it previously theatrically and the more washed out look of the Criterion seems to match what I remember of it.

You can never be too sure. Case in point: Sweetie BD.

I hope they can confirm it soon. We have a used copy of the Something Weird release at work, and I was considering picking it up...

Anything but a turd, and it's aged extremely well! Something Weird's print of MURDER A LA MOD was in excellent condition to boot, so presumably Criterion has access to it (at least tentatively) and wouldn't need to do much work on it. That trailer posted way back doesn't really do the film justice. It's been a while since I saw it, but I do recall thinking of BLOW OUT while I watched it, but can't remember why now. As someone else noted, it could easily merit a standalone Criterion release, provided they rounded up some good context to go along with it, or coaxed DePalma to sit down and talk about it at length in an interview, but including it with BLOW OUT, if that comes to pass, is inspired.

If it's close to Amazon's $10, it's worth it. THE MOVING FINGER, also on the same disc, is a pretty decent film as well. Even the bonus film AN EYE FOR THE GIRLS is moderately worth a peek.

I don't think Criterion would upgrade these but I seen both F For Fake and George Washington showing in HD on a Showtime in the last few weeks. It might mean that HD upgrades are coming or it could be nothing. F For Fake looked pretty bad picture quality wise but George Washington looked good.

From Criterion's own site, 1.33:1.

If QT is a fan of anyone, it's De Palma.

I can get it at my store for less than that, so I think I'll try to snag it. If it ends up on Criterion's Blu-Ray, then that's just an extra bonus.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Just got this e-mail from Criterion:

We will be announcing new Blu-ray and DVD editions of Solaris as part of our May lineup. We now know that the black-and-white scenes in the film were meant to be tinted blue, and we have updated the feature accordingly. The supplements from the original DVD will not change.

The old DVD edition is officially out of print. However, we are offering it at a 65% discount from the SRP at criterion.com (use the promotion code RHEYA at checkout). We have a limited supply and will fulfill orders as soon as we can.
