re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I am OK with Criterion releasing 2-3 *new* releases and 3-4 blu-ray upgrades every month. They have literally 100s of movies still in print that they haven't released on Blu-ray yet and I hope they eventually get there entire catalouge upgraded that they possibly can

Perhaps this is due to ongoing relationships with a director, etc.; I'm surprised by the Fat Girl and Sweetie upgrades.

Not blu-ray related, but perhaps noteworthy to some:

The Entire Criterion Collection Coming to Hulu Plus

If Criterion plans to no longer provides their releases to Netflix streaming that will be a major disappointment. I am not going to leave Netflix though just so that I can have that capability with Hulu. I'll rent the physical discs (which is what I tend to do anyway).

Although Netflix almost never upgrades a Criterion title to Blu-ray if they already carry the previous DVD version.

All I'm hearing from responses here and elsewhere:

"WAH, I DON'T HAVE EIGHT DOLLARS A MONTH TO AFFORD THE ENTIRE CRITERION COLLECTION WITH BONUS MATERIAL STREAMING. WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH."

I'll keep my Netflix and pay the additional eight dollars a month for Hulu.

I'd love me some Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring. Would be an instant purchase for me.

I'd also drool at any chance for a couple of Patrice Leconte masterpieces - The Hairdresser's Husband and Monsieur Hire.

Exactly...Leconte is just another respectable French director who hasn't been represented on English-subtitled blu-ray, and not even that well on DVD. It's time for other French movies as the ones listed to be represented on English-subtitled blu-ray instead of the usual pretentious watch-once ones that Criterion gets rights to.

It's possible that whoever owns the rights to those films you want are not willing to work with Criterion. I am sure CC does the best they can with what they can get

Since were talking about French films, any chance Criterion releases Claude Miller's The Little Thief any time soon? This is sort of a female version of 400 Blows and Truffaut wrote the screenplay. I don't think this has ever been released on DVD (in the US) only VHS.

Mortelle Randonee first please if Claude Miller is an option. I dont think it has even a dvd release elsewhere that's worth getting.

Yes, the NTSC dvd version was heavily cut, while the PAL version had the uncut version it only had the original French audio language and no english Subs.

Great performance by both leads and a nice cameo by Stephane Audran.

It's all a matter of perspective. I'd guess that about 99% of the general population would describe every single title on your want list as a "pretentious watch-once movie," if they're even that generous.

I'm not saying I agree with that (I don't), but I think it's pretty funny that you believe yourself to be an arbiter of taste when it comes to French films.

You enjoy putting words into people's mouths, don't you? This was just the list of films that I like and some others have already said they liked, before your usual angry comments directed at me. I'm just trying talk about famous French films that haven't been released on English-subtitled blu-ray.

These films aren't considered pretentious at all - they were just like regular, almost mainstream, French films from the 1970s - 1990s that became regarded as classics, with some of them already released on blu-ray in France (without English subs). It's nice that Criterion releases blu-rays of Goddard and Truffaut, but it would be nice to mix it up with more of the French "respectable mainstream, non-art-housey" classics as some in my list.

I don't think of myself as an arbiter of taste when it comes to French films. I just find it strange that many of those French films/filmmakers from the 1970s - 1990s are not well-represented on English-subtitled blu-ray.

I just asked a Netflix rep about this and he sidestepped the question. So, I guess they won't be able to rent them anymore.
