yeah apparently shot at 2:55:1 but shown regularly at 2:20:1.

The colours look slightly better on the Fox, but at least in the screenies, the Fox has slightly less detail IMHO.

I can't wait to scoop up that Videodrome BR the next time B&N has their sale. :)

Why are Criterion's extras always interlaced?

Or is that because the Fox shows so much more of the frame, so any area in the Fox image will have less less pixel space to present it compared to the equivalent area on the Criterion?

Plus it looks like there is more ringing along edges (edge enhancement?) on the Criterion so it gives the impression of more 'stuff' but much of it is video compression artifacts.

At least thats what it looks like to me from the screen dumps.

yeah no idea to be honest. My copy of The Leopard hasnt arrived yet from the B&N sale so cant say what my impression of the PQ is of the CC disc.

Also, I wouldnt buy the Fox without knowing more about the 'correct' colour scheme and aspect ratio. And it will take some convincing regardless, I'm used to the colour scheme on the CC dvd (which is obviously similar to the blu ray).

If they were originally SD, I think they upconvert them to 1080i (?). I'd almost prefer they left them in their original resolution.

I always found it amusing that the Civic Television offices are filled with posters for Roger Corman films. At first I thought that perhaps those sequences were shot at New World, but they didn't have a Canadian office, did they? I don't recall Cronenberg mentioning the posters at all on the commentary track.

Has any of you had this happen to your Blu-ray Criterion titles?

I purchased the two movie set of Yojimbo and Sanjuro on the B&N sale and when I tried to play Yojimbo last night, it wouldn't load and "The disc cannot play" message popped up. My Sony player wasn't able to recognize the disc itself. I put Sanjuro next, and it load up with no problem. I also inserted Modern Times and Seven Samurai Blu-rays and they load up with no issues.
To test it one more time, I inserted the Yojimbo disc on my PS3 and it also wouldn't read it. So I can definitely say that is not a firmware issue of my player.

I e-mailed B&N to see if they can exchange the disc for me and if not, I guess I have to contact Criterion directly.

They will. Some folks had problems with both Yojimbo and Walkabout on several machines, where specific players have issues either booting the disc or maintaining stability with the audio and video.

It's too bad, I was looking forward to watching the film. Hopefully, B&N will contact me soon...

My apologies if this has already been mentioned, I didn't see it if it was:

Posted 4 hours ago on the Criterion Facebook page:

"We're announcing new titles on Wednesday, what are you hoping for?"

I hope some of these will be BDs.

Outside of Eclipse and box set titles, they very rarely release anything as DVD-only anymore, so I'd expect at least 3 of 4 to be Blu-rays.

They've announced new BD's for every single month since they started releasing them except Feb 2009. Why wouldn't there be any this month

Ghost World?
The Social Network?
The Blob?
Carnival of Souls?
Fat Girl?

Those are a few I would enjoy

Does anyone know if Criterion sells or sends replacement cases?

I bought Cronos (BD) today at a shop maybe 40+ minutes from where I live. Came home to find the spine is split open possibly from a boxcutter/unboxing.

As far as I know, they do. I had a copy of Stagecoach arrive from Amazon that was similarly damaged. I emailed Jon Mulvaney and he hit me back with a quick response asking for my mailing address. A week or two later, a new case arrived in the mail free of charge.

Thanks for the heads up!

I sent an email in hopes something like that would happen :)

Is $69.99 a good price for the BBS set? I know Amazon is running Criterion's cheaper this week and I wanted to grab that.

Never been lower anywhere else, to my knowledge (although B&N was pretty close).

That is what I figured. i wanted to double check since I got burned on a couple of Amazon deals a few weeks ago.

Time to order!

Peter Weir's Fearless. Come on, come on! It's about time this title was treated right.

Blow Out has been teased already, so I'm guessing that.

I would also love the Three Color Trilogy

M. Hulot's Holiday would also be pretty sweet (on blu-ray)

My guesses:

Weekend
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Passion of Joan of Arc
City Lights
The Killing

Titles hinted at in the newsletters usually don't get announced until months later, so I doubt we'll see Blow Out in March.

I don't have a prediction, but I have a dream:

Blue Velvet
La Grande Illusion
Pasqualino Settebellezze
Rashomon

If my dream comes true, I will convert my house and open The First International Church of Criterion.

Since Rashomon toured with a new print this year, that one wouldn't be a stretch. Same rationale works for Mr. Hulot's Holiday. Both would be great news, but Rashomon will check an item off of my personal top five wish list.

Yes, but didn't the remaining Hulot titles revert to Studio Canal's control? Please tell me I'm wrong- I would looooooooooooooove to be wrong!

oops...I left out an important part. I hope some of these will be BD versions of some current titles. I have a few I'd like to see upgraded. Fanny & Alexander and Rashomon top my list.
