The original color timing of Do The Right Thing is back on the upcoming 4K restoration release:

This excited me, until I looked at the samples in the link. It's still quite different from the original Criterion DVD. Definitely better than the Universal release, though.

The DVD should not be the reference for what the movie is supposed to look like. The DVD was Criterion's first attempt to meet Ernest Dickerson's intentions for color timing, within the limitations of that format. The orange hue looks a little oversaturated in most of the DVD screenshots.

The new Criterion Blu-ray screenshots appear to follow the same color grading intentions, but with better clarity and more accurate saturation.

I'm not saying it's 'the' reference, just that it's my reference (or preference, if you will).

I don't get the same feeling of heat from the screenshots for the new Blu-ray. As an example, the shot of Ozzie Davis standing on the street.

I'll probably buy it, anyway, especially for the extras.

FWIW, my copy of The Spanish Prisoner shipped and Amazon now shows it in stock. Guess I'll find out in a day or two what I paid for.

Went to B&N today with the intention of only buying two discs. Walked out with Blue Velvet, Hedwig, House of Games, and Notorious.

Seems like Martin Bell's 1984 film Streetwise is coming up:

Just got my copy. Looks like all we get it a full frame trailer for the extras. Well, the trailer and English subs on the movie. Good news (sort of) is that the movie itself looks pretty good - not 4K remastered (maybe 2k?), but compared to the full frame trailer, you can easily tell it's been cleaned up and in its correct aspect ratio. I guess I'm happy with it. It could have been a lot worse. Still could use some Criterion lovin' (as well as just about all other Mamet films).

looking forward to Klute. i don't agree with Dr. Svet's opinion of the movie as i think it is a classic, but everything else is stellar (especially those hefty extras) and that's all 5's for me...

amen. House of Games and Homicide (both of which i have and are amazing) are simply not enough. we need SP, Glengarry, Redbelt, hell, i loved Spartan, Heist was brilliant. hell even throw in The Untouchables, which i know isn't a typical Mamet film, but he did write it and could use an upgrade.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I hate this forum for getting me to go to Barnes and Noble and hit the 50% off Criterion and Arrow sale.

Today I got Bull Durham and Dressed to Kill. Last week I got Police Story 1 and 2, Before Trilogy, Tootsie, Sex Lies and Video Tape and the Breakfast Club.

I'm not the biggest Criterion fan because IMO a lot of the movies are more "art house" and don't have much replay value. So I had to be a little picky what I wanted.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Did any of you guys ever have any problem with bronzing on some of the Criterion titles replicated/released during 2009-2010? I have encountered 7 titles so far that I am going to have to ask for a replacement for. A few of them are titles not even mentioned on the "master" list of affected titles. Kagemusha and 8 1/2 are two of them that I have problems with along with Walkabout, Monsoon Wedding, M, Revanche and Paris, Texas. Those are the titles that I have found up to this point of going through my collection. I probably checked 30 discs today. You guys might want to do the same if you have some of these titles and haven't watched them in some time. I am also pissed to know that my Monster Squad, which is now OOP, is starting to bronze. I am going to also post this in the B&N sale thread.

I'm probably just out of the loop, but I hadn't heard of this issue before. Where's the list of affected titles that you mentioned? And does this actually make them unplayable?

My advice would be to do a little more exhaustive research on potentially affected titles. That list does not include all of the titles that have become problematic for some owners. I have encountered a handful so far that are not on that list to go along with several that are. I would also use at least two different bd players while testing their playback. On Stagecoach, for example, I had problems with one of the special features skipping about 20 minutes. This was repeated on two completely different players. There are problems with movies replicated during the 09-10 period at a certain replication site. A lot of discs under other labels that were also replicated there have also gone bad. Fortunately, Criterion is doing the right thing by looking after their customers and swapping out the bad discs.

My Monster Squad special edition that is long OOP and from Lionsgate is starting to show signs of bronzing. If that goes bad then I am simply shit out of luck. It has some great special features that are no longer available.

Looking forward to seeing what spine 1000 is going to be tomorrow. Hoping for a Wong Kar Wai box set.

We should probably be wary of all Criterion titles that came out before 2011 or so, and check them every now and then.

Wonderful! It's about time. I still have the laserdisc, which I bought for about 75 bucks twenty-five years ago.

Surprised there was no announcement today. It's usually Mondays isn't it?
