I might be interested in 1984 if I didn’t already have the Twilight Time release and the MGM DVD. The special features don’t sound like they’re worth an upgrade.

Strong month. I'll be picking up

Baker's Wife
Europa Europa
Klute

along with a bunch more in the Criterion sale. If there is a Criterion sale, of course. Should never take anything for granted, I suppose.

With some big Arrow releases that I don't think I can wait to pick up on sale, July is shaping up to be an expensive month.

I've never seen this, but I'm interested in the Eurythmics soundtrack version. Maybe a lot of people will dump their DVDs and I can grab a used copy cheap.

Be aware that there's not much Eurythmics music in the movie. Director Michael Radford hated that score so much that he used only the bare minimum of it that the studio demanded, and had the volume suppressed very low in the mix so it wouldn't draw attention to itself.

The Twilight Time Blu-ray offered an isolated score track that sounded much richer and stronger than the full movie soundtrack. But, again, there really isn't much music in that version of the movie, so the track has really long silent stretches between short bursts of score. I'm not sure whether Criterion will also include that feature (it's not in the specs on the Criterion web site).

The Muldowney track has a fair amount more music in it than the Eurythmics track.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the older DVD editions only had the Muldowney score, no Eurythmics.

"When We Were Kings"?
Though I don't know who those guys are and what they have to do with Muhammad Ali.

Could well be right, slop.
Looks like Woody Allen and Francis Coppola sitting on a bench.

A Dream of Kings?

That is a tough one.

That's definitely not Woody Allen. Not the type of hat, glasses or jacket he would wear.

^Yeah, you're right about the duds. The face of the guy on the left in the thought bubble does look a lot like Allen, though. Less so outside the bubble.

Janus tweeted this:

<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

So, it is thought that it has something to do with Burroughs and Ginsberg... Kerouac: King of The Beats or The Beat Generation: An American Dream. Maybe a collection of docs? It doesn't seem like the greatest clue. Idk...

Makes sense. Guy on the right could pass for either Coppola or Ginsberg.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

As reported by Filmmaker Magazine at the Hawaii International Film Festival where [Wong Kar-wai] appeared, he confirmed that his studio Jet Tone Films are completing 4K restorations of all of his films with a theatrical tour in 2020 in mind, timed with the 20th anniversary of his masterpiece In the Mood for Love. It also seems that those who have been clamoring for a re-issue of the out-of-print Chungking Express will get more than desired. Janus Films and The Criterion Collection hold U.S. rights to these restorations, so we can hope that means an exquisite Bergman-esque box set is around the corner–perhaps after an Abbas Kiarostami one, following his forthcoming touring restrospective.

A little underwhelmed by that slate. Magnificent Obsession might be a blind buy, I like what I've seen of Sirk.

Any word on the next B & N 50% of sale? Typically it happens in June, but haven't seen any evidence of that for this year.

Ah! Lol, No wonder I haven't heard anything yet about the sale! Guess Police Story will have to wait until then.

For what it's worth, I think that movie is almost on par with my favorite of Sirk's, All That Heaven Allows...That was a fantastic movie and this one isn't that far off...Buy it with confidence...I doubt you'll be disappointed...
