re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Anyone crack into House of Games or Funny Games yet? Have HoG on dvd, somewhere, but c’mon. Think I bought digital too. Haven’t seen any reviews. Love the movie and especially Mamet. Would love Criterion to do more of his stuff. Spanish Prisoner please. And was always interested in Haneke original. I think I saw the insipid remake with Naomi Watts and Tim Roth. Ugh, but heard original is great. I have them coming tomorrow, but don’t know when I’ll get to them...

Well, the remake is also by Haneke, so I wouldn't call it insipid. But either movie (actually, most of Hanke's movies, save for Cache), good or not, are movies I never want to see again, much less own.

The Spanish Prisoner was just released by an indie label called Ammo Content earlier this month. Or supposedly released. Amazon says "Usually ships within 1 to 3 months."

Amazon Amazon

In any case, I don't think Criterion's getting the rights to it anytime soon.

Ammo Content? Who are they and how the heck did they get the rights to it? I ordered it, but what will I be getting? Yeah, I’m guessing Criterion won’t get their hands on the rights for a very long time.

Ammo Content has some weird B-C level shit - and The Spanish Prisoner. I’m guessing this will be bare bones only.

The release date on that has gotten pushed back numerous times. No way in hell I'd pay $20 for that without some reviews on quality.

I love the movie, so I'll take my chances. As long as the picture quality isn't some kind of sub-par DVD/VHS quality, it'll be worth it to me.

I think there's a very good chance that it's recycled from an old DVD master. Which would be problematic because the DVD was released by Sony during the era when they edge enhanced everything.

I'd be very pleasantly surprised if it turns out to be a fresh film scan.

I can’t believe nobody has commented on the Kiarostami films. I’ve wanted these for almost twenty years. I’m so excited.

Missed your comment. Who knows. I did send them an email asking for anything at all regarding what they plan on releasing. No response so far.

So October should see spine 1,000 released. I wonder if Criterion has any special plans or do they consider such things trivial.

No idea what it will be but they do put thought into certain numbers. How could they not get a giggle out of #666.

I think/hope 1000 is something special.

I would trade all of your souls for spine 1000 to be Criterion's first 4K being a box set of all three seasons of Twin Peaks.

I'm going to guess #1000 will be either Orson Welles related or one of the movies Netflix released (Roma, Buster Scruggs, etc.), preferable on UHD, but not likely.

If spine 1000 is a 4K title it could be Good Burger and I'd be over the moon.

What could that possibly offer that the existing Blu-rays for the series don't? Other than the Criterion branding, their Fire Walk With Me release was almost entirely redundant to the Paramount/CBS edition.

I've got my fingers crossed that it's Betty Blue from Jean-Jacques Beineix.

EDITED TO ADD: Dex, you must have beat me by mere seconds!

No, it should be the original, unaltered Star Wars trilogy.

Just FYI: but Klute is $22.99 with free in store pickup at Walmart, if you don’t want to go Amazon route...
