re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I forgot all about this until I read the last few posts...
I bought all 9 replacement cases in December, and they never arrived well into the new year. When others started reporting that they had received them, I contacted Criterion and asked about my order's status. They said I should have received them by now, and promptly shipped 9 new cases which I received via UPS the next day. They also told me that if the 1st shipment ever arrived that I could do whatever I wanted with them. Lo and behold, two weeks later, I found that first package waiting on my doorstep: well-weathered, cheap mailer, but the cases are bubble-wrapped, safe, and sound. Anyways, if anyone wants them for $3 postage thru Paypal, send me a PM, and I'll get them to you after the holiday weekend. No new packaging, I'll just seal the envelope & ship Media Mail as-is.

P.S. I want them going to a good home. Bargain-hunting bottom feeders looking to flip these for a few quick bucks, don't waste your time, I know who you are.

ETA: TAKEN!

I assume the packaging was necessary to house the 92-page booklet?

To your horror? I'm guessing you didn't previously see photos of the packaging on the internet from other site reviews and the such?

This is definitely a classy-looking set. This set in no way is packaged as inferior as the early 9 digipack Criterion blu-rays. It has a nice outer slip case with a lovely, thick booklet.

I can't imagine that Criterion will ever release a plastic replacement case option for this wonderfully packaged release.

Packaging issues aside, Criterion has surpassed my expectations in almost every way. I never thought they would be releasing so many titles on a consistent basis. The quality of movies with The Thin Red Line, Red Desert, and even Abbas Kiarostami finally getting a release, not just on DVD but on Blu-ray is very, very impressing.
A simple Blu-ray case with a classy Slip Cover would have been fine (like Lionsgate Studio Canal releases).

I love the classics as much as the next guy, of course, but I really love the Criterion/IFC partnership that is going on right now. I hope that continues for years to come.

Yes, to my horror. Now I have 25 or so blu rays sitting nicely on a shelf designed to hold their length and one oversized digipack hanging out of the middle of them. Ridiculous.

They can shrink wrap the back or provide a slip case as they've done many times. Thumbs WAY down.

I don't find it horrifying, but personally I think it's a minor annoyance that the inner digipacks don't maintain a straight edge when they're in the slipcase. You can even see that in one of the linked pics. It's not that big of a deal, but I think it does knock down the aesthetic value and mar the otherwise classy look of the set. Lots of DVDs have been packed this way (both from Criterion and other studios - the original Godfather trilogy comes to mind) and I've never really liked it. I would have preferred their standard plastic blu-ray case to hold all the discs packaged with the booklet inside the slipcover.

Yeah. I'm with Kerborus on this. It's great content-wise but terrible packaging-wise. My impression was that Criterion deliberately moved away from the digipaks due to customer complaints and trying to conform to the keepcase standard, etc. Now this thing just looks really weird and out of place among the rest of my Criterions. It's a minor quibble, but a major annoyance for OCD retards like myself

One of the things I liked about blu-rays at first was the uniformity. But, just like DVDs, it appears that we can throw that out the window.

I've only been buying BDs for about a year, but already have 20 or so titles that are not standard casing.

So while I'm very tempted to buy the cases from Criterion to make most of them standard, I'll hopefully pass on their offer since my blu-ray library is already all kinds of messed up due to other packages.

Yep. Just based on my own collection, there are the blue keeepcases (98% of movies), the clear keepcases (Criterion), the green keepcases (Whip It, Hulk, Green Lantern), Sopranos season 6 (DVD sized retarded HBO packaging), The National Geographic collection (same as Sopranos), digibooks, oversized digibooks (KotCS), Band of Brothers tin case, steelbooks, True Blood seasons 1-2, Rome book-style packaging, Close Encounters digipak, The Messenger digipak, slim blue keepcases (Austin Powers, Ultimate Matrix collection, Batman Anthology), Star Trek original motion picture digipak, Battlestar Galactica digipaks, South Park seasons 12-13, and so on and so forth.

Pain in the ass.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I think I may be about to say something that everyone can agree on.

How about if the studios release their special stuff in whatever type of packaging they want, as doctorhotd lists above, but inside that packaging the actual discs and coverart are in standard blu-ray packaging?

I would love that. All my blu-rays perfectly uniform, with whatever specials I like on top of the bookcase, or displayed wherever I want.

I know it's just a hypothetical, but that's not really possible with some of the packaging that studios choose, such as digibooks (which I actually like).

Darn, you're right. We'd have to redesign those entirely

I like digibooks too, but can see them becoming a problem for people who have kids, or messy adults, or who lend their movies out to others.

Uniformity? I like individuality for my releases. Even though it's easier for me to sort, I appreciate Criterion and their creative packaging.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I just received an email from them concerning the replacement cases I ordered. Here is the part of it that would matter to all of you guys:

Please note that we are out of stock on all cases and expect more to arrive within the next two weeks. As soon as we receive more cases, we will ship them out through First Class/Priority USPS Postal Service, so you should expect to receive your order within 3-5 weeks from now. You will receive a confirmation e-mail when your order ships.

Instead of paying for replacement cases, I just pawned off my digi-packs and replaced them (or will) during the B&N sales....pretty easy to at least break even on Criterion Blus.

Actually, the By Brakhage packaging is completely consistent with the way they've been packaging their films for quite some time since at least spine 185. Anything with a somewhat thick booklet or book has been released in digipaks surrounded by a slipcase. The problem with the early blu releases was that there was no slipcase or book. It just seemed like a cheap way to package their blu-rays. I'm sure the Seven Samurai and Breathless Blu's will also be in digipaks because of their fairly large booklets.
