re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I wonder if Blu-ray is still seen as niche to the studios, whereas they are more likely to license out older films to Criterion.

Like I don't see Fox releasing films like Night of the Hunter or even Some Like It Hot on Blu-ray.

Maybe they don't find a financial worth for releasing old films that won't get a lot of attention? I mean....we can all see how WB MIGHT not see Stagecoach in the same light as Casablanca. It's not a drama. It's a western. An old western. Which means...most people don't give a shit about it unless it's star is alive and still doing badass stuff. IE Clint Eastwood, though what makes Eastwood different is that he did a varied level of work all the way up to now (bear w/ me here) he wasn't dictated as much to a genre as (the amazing and legendary) John Wayne. Wayne is the Western genre (I'm uncomfortable saying that and what I'm about to say but...to people who are like us and know film it's true). The western isn't as cool as it was for our parents.

Saying that. I'm 23 yrs. old. A film major at UNT. Have Mexican parents who each parent enjoyed different genres. Dad- HK action cinema and U.S. action movies. Mom-Westerns and dramas (with some Mexican films for the both thrown in there too). Not many people around my age give a damn about the western. It's a B movie genre type (again I hate saying that) that thrived like crazy but it's not hot anymore. That's where I see studios not really pushing a film like Stagecoach. And it's also the why.

ooooh!!!!
Well look here.

Seems like Amazon doesn't have Pierrot Le Fou anymore. So fucking lucky I have it now. Well at least it's out on the Blu.

Not only that but the DVD version is no longer available at the Criterion site. If any of you want the Blu-ray I'd order it ASAP.

This has been much rumored as a Criterion Blu-ray later in 2010.

No, it's just temporarily out of stock. All of the DVDs have been since they announced the OOP sale.

Wha!? That would be incredible. I would love to see what supplementary features Criterion could put together for Night of the Hunter.

I stress the word rumored at this point. This was posted on the Criterion Forum recently:
some guy on Facebook wrote:
Thanks for M. That leaves 4 blus on my must have list, Badlands, Fanny and Alexander, The Night of the Hunter and Black Narcissus. Your the best CC!

Criterion wrote:
With that list, you're going to have a good BD-year...
There have been other mentions of this title as well over the last few months, but obviously nothing concrete. As far as supplementary materials, there is potentially a treasure-trove. In his fascinating book Heaven and Hell to Play With: The Filming of "The Night of the Hunter", Preston Neal describes the extensive surviving outtakes from the film in detail, so those could certainly be included, as well as the original introduction, narrated by Charles Laughton. Possibly some or all of these would have been part of the postponed (and now presumably shelved) MGM 2-disc SE.

Normally I would have never posted anything but that comment freaked me out, and I was glad to see that he was wrong so I had to make sure everyone else knew that it wasn't true haha.

I would buy all four of those rumored titles. Badlands makes sense, given the Days of Heaven disc.

Holy fuck....I'd love for this bitch to be packed with as many deleted scenes as possible. And whatever version that Malick is content with honestly. Theatrical or that long one I hear about.

I'd just be happy for a Thin Red Line release on BD. Don't care if it's Criterion or Fox and I don't care if it's barebones

Looking forward to that one too, tho I'd rather wait another yr or two if we get a CC release.

So how many BD's does Criterion release a yr? Seems like we're getting more announcements now.. or maybe I"m just paying closer attention.

Anyone know of Pierrot le Fou has always been $26.96 at the Criterion store? The reason I ask is because the Criterion website says they are giving an extra $5 off all these titles that are going out of print, but the price is still $26.96 for Pierrot le Fou.

Their regular price is typically $31.99 for all $40-tier items, I believe.

Correct. The $5 off is already reflected.

Yeah, Pierrot Le Fou on Blu is gone on Amazon and LOOKS like they still have DVDs of it too. God, I love DVDtalk for warning me on this stuff.

on a more positive note, The 400 Blows is for $19.99 on Amazon. It's soooo mine.

As far as I know, Criterion is still honoring all purchases made up until the end of March, so I'm not sure what the issue is unless you are really in to buying things on Amazon.
