re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Anybody know what the packaging of the Yojimbo/Sanjuro set is going to look like? Individual release cases in a cardboard slipcover or something else?

Isn't the above picture one of the DVD set?

If you order directly from Criterion how do they ship? UPS, FedEx or USPS.

Do they ship a little early to get pre-orders on release day or ship on release day or later?

They've always shipped UPS for me. Don't know about pre-orders, though.

Good enough! If Amazon does not drop their March pre-order prices soon, I may just order directly.

I guess they're happy with the preorders for Malick's Days of Heaven.

That will look beautiful in Blu! The movie, not the Thin Red Lion.

I wonder what the likelihood of the legendary deleted footage being included is. Either way, great news.

Beyond deleted footage, there's a near 4-hour director's cut that exists. If anyone can release that, it's Criterion.

I really hope so. I've always been very curious about it. This movie should look beautiful in High Definition.

I always liked how this movie came out the same year as Saving Private Ryan, while all my friends were raving about that movie, I was like you should see The Thin Red Lion it's way better, man.

Were there any comparisons on it. Was it a better but a non financially viable cut?

I'd love to have as much as possible on this film.

The only person to ever really mention it in interviews was one of the background actors, Danny Hoch:
But what happened with Thin Red Line was that Terrance Malick made a 5 1/2-hour film for Sony and Sony sold the film during its production to Fox and when Fox decided to distribute it they said 'Hey! We're not releasing a 5 1/2-hour film on Christmas Day. We're cutting three hours out of the film and we're gonna excavate all the scenes that do not have movie stars in them. We're gonna splice together all the scenes that do have movie stars.' Originally the A-list guys were cameos, like John Travolta, Woody Harrelson, Clooney, Cusack. They were kinda like cameos. Not only did they cut out my role, which, you know, whatever, I had like four good scenes and I certainly wasn't a lead by any means. But they cut out most of the leads, including THE lead [Adrien Brody] and they just extracted their entire scenes, storylines, and characters from the film, including the main character who doesn't appear in the final cut."

Criterion should work with Malick to create a new cut of the film. I hope that's what they will do.
