re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
it's not bluray but BFI just released a Tati collection (for some reason it doesn't include 'Trafic')
Jour de fête (1949)
A hilarious exposé of the modern obsession of with speed and efficiency, Jacques Tati’s award winning feature début is a dazzling blend of satire and slapstick.
Les Vacances de M. Hulot (1953)
The film that brought Jacques Tati international acclaim also launched his on-screen alter ego: the courteous, well-meaning eternally accident-prone Monsieur Hulot.
Mon Oncle (1958)
Jacques Tati’s third feature is a satirical assault on the twin targets of efficiency and the modern world. Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and a Special Prize at Cannes.
Playtime (1967)
Regarded by many as Jacques Tati’s masterpiece, Playtime is a surreal comic vision of mankind’s battle against the overwhelming depersonalisation of modern life.
Parade (1974)
Tati’s last film sees his return to the boisterous music hall world in which he began his career as a mime artist in the 1930’s. The perfect stage for Tati’s comic genius.
Extras across the five discs include: Interview with filmmaker Richard Lester on Tati:
Playtime feature commentary by film historian Philip Kemp:
Short Documentary ‘Au-delà de Playtime:
Continuity supervisor Sylvette Baudrot on Tati and Playtime:
Director biography and short film about Tati:
Interview with Tati, filmed in London (1977,19 min) :
Original Tati trailers :
Fully illustrated colour booklets containing commissioned sleeve notes, essays and biographies.
cool beans!

I received all of my replacement cases today. All my Criterion Blu-ray discs look pretty great together. The only one that sticks out like a sore thumb is... yup... you guessed it... The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
I would kill for a replacement case for that one. I know Paramount distributed it, but Criterion should offer a replacement case anyway.

I didn't hate the cardboard cases like a lot of people, but I absolutely love the clear cases they're using now.
If I could buy them in bulk (preferably in thinner versions), I'd replace ALL of the ugly blue cases I have. I haven't bothered to see if anyone sells them, though.
edit: looks like the cases come from Scanavo (model number CBR 101), but they're not listed on the Scanavo.com website, which makes me assume that they are custom made solely for Criterion. I'm tempted to contact Scanavo and see if they'd produce a "normal thickness" version... but I wouldn't be able to afford a large enough order to make it cost-effective. I can dream, though...

Well shit...I've only been putting off buying Grand Illusion since, well, the beginning.
I was really hoping for an updated Alphaville also, good to know that R2 version is out there though.

I guess I don't understand how Criterion can lose the rights to these films.
I mean, is there really that much revenue/profit left in some of these titles for the rights holder to terminate Criterion's license??

^ it has something to do Studio Canal who owns the rights thinking that Lionsgate will do better than Criterion - HAH, fools!

it hasn't been confirmed as to whether or not it will be blu-ray/dvd or just dvd but here's the artwork (minus the title, etc.) for NIGHT TRAIN TO MUNICH, due out in june:

here's hoping it will get a blu-ray release.

Got my Third Man replacement case today. It was run over by a car from the tire print and the case and insert are completely destroyed. Ordered another replacement so I'm up to $10 so far on just a case for the movie. Sigh.
At least Pierott and Seventh Seal arrived from Amazon with no damage so some good news at least. I still want to pick up Bottlerocket, but I am waiting till I find it in the plastic case.

Criterion wouldn't send you another one for free??

Not really their fault. Thing was in a padded mailer and wrapped inside that with bubble wrap. It took complete incompetence by the post office to destroy it. I didn't even ask for a free replacement. I just sent them another $5.

I agree Criterion doesn't owe you anything, but you ought to try to get $5 from the post office, even if only to make a point.
