too bad Criterion didn't release 'Smiles on a Summer Night' would have made a great third film with 'Interlude' and 'Monika'

I'm all over La Haine and maybe the 2 Bergmans.

I'm not exactly a Blockbuster spokesperson, but I've had luck renting some Criterion titles from Blockbuster By Mail that weren't carried by Netflix (most recently, The Phantom Carriage SD).

Another nice thing about Blockbuster is that you don't have to be a current member to log into your account & add DVDs to your queue. So you can actually research their stock if you're so inclined, they don't have a separate tier for BD, they'll tell you straight up which formats & versions they carry a title in.

[Then again, I think it might have been the opposite with Kuroneko, where I got that from Netflix. Both BB & Netflix carry a lot of titles unavailable from the other.]

Anyway, the features listed for MALKOVICH!
DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION:
New high-definition digital restoration, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
New selected-scene audio commentary featuring filmmaker Michel Gondry
New behind-the-scenes documentary by filmmaker Lance Bangs
Conversation between John Malkovich and humorist John Hodgman
Director Spike Jonze discusses Being John Malkovich via photos from its production
Two films within the film: 7½ Floor Orientation and “American Arts & Culture” Presents John Horatio Malkovich, “Dance of Despair and Disillusionment”
An Intimate Portrait of the Art of Puppeteering, a documentary by Bangs
Trailer and TV spots
PLUS: A booklet featuring a conversation between Jonze and pop-culture critic Perkus Tooth
Someone else can do the homework on the rest of the upcoming releases.

Why would Goundry have a commentary track and not Spike Jones?

Criterion asked on facebook about which catalog titles should be upgraded to Blu-ray. They've received over 1200 replies... most of which I don't agree with...

Gondry and Jonze are friends; I imagine Jonze declined to commentate and suggested his friend do it instead.

I also reckon Gondry has things to say about Charlie Kaufman, since they've collaborated as much as Kaufman has with Jonze.

When it comes to interviews and such, Spike Jonze strikes me as someone who makes the Coen Brothers look like gregarious extroverts by comparison.

Maybe, but I also suspect it's all a put-on. I wish Criterion had retained the interview from the Universal DVD, where he throws up because he's being asked questions about the movie.

brute force, the blob, george washington, short cuts, the 39 steps, really any of their horror or film noir titles would be great.

They've already upgraded most of the titles that were most desperately in need of revision (mostly the early spine numbers, like the Powells, the Suzukis, the Fullers, Diabolique, etc.) - the remaining big ones, in my opinion, are Andrei Rublev (which I'll buy the day it's released, even though I'm generally not buying upgrades at this point) and the two David Lean adaptations of Dickens novels.

What, no demand for BD Equinox?

Actually, what I could never get my mind around was the BD of Gimme Shelter. Do you get a clearer image of the Hell's Angel stabbing the guy to death?

But, in all seriousness, are there any other Criterion docs you think would benefit from a BD upgrade? Hearts & Minds? Haxan? Koko?

I'd say the Samurai Trilogy is equally high in need as Rublev and the Leans, though they are as well.

Gimme Shelter surely benefited from lossless audio, didn't it?

Forgot about that. Picnic at Hanging Rock would also greatly benefit...

Anyway, some bored soul has compiled the results of the Facebook poll:

Hopefully that gets the ball rolling for Brazil on Blu-Ray (assuming it's not already in the works).

Back in April of last year, Mulvaney said this via email:
We do hope to re-release this film on Blu-ray in 2011 or 2012 but don't have an exact date set, so please stay tuned!

I totally forgot to vote for This Sporting Life...but at least someone did.

Hasn't Rashomon been played for sometime now? And what about Le Samurai...do they still have the rights to that one?

yes, why the 4K restoration hasn't yet been released on blu via Criterion is a major headscratcher - come on, what's the holdup here?
