I've had it happen before with dvd. My friend just had it happen with a copy of Oceans 13 last week.

What do you mean a security sticker on the disc?

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

You know those plastic security tags stores put on DVDs and CDs? One of those was stuck on the face of the disc.

wow. That sucks. How'd you miss it when you opened it up?

Supermallet 01-11-10 11:04 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I was paying attention to something else when I opened up the case and popped it in the player.

You mean when you were peeling the ones off the case something happened and it got caught on the disc?

Supermallet 01-12-10 02:46 AM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

No, it came stuck on the disc. I didn't notice it was on the disc because when I opened the wrapping and the case I wasn't paying much attention.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I think TheDuke is referring to the security stickers that come on the case to prevent people from opening the case (that also says the movie title). I think Suprmallet is referring to the stickers that are many 0.33" x 1", and that have a magnet or a little electronics in them. That sucks, Suprmallet. Glad everything seems to be working ok.

Yes, that's what I meant.

Oddly enough, my BD of Kagemusha had the same issue when I bought it back during the last Barnes and Noble Criterion sale. Thankfully, I caught the sticker before I put it into the player and was able to remove it without any damage. I wonder if they have some glitches at the pressing plant?

A member over on blu-ray.com received all 9 replacement cases today and has posted a couple of pictures for those that are interested.

So true! I would think that Walkabout would be an eye popper; I kind of wish they had never mentioned it way back in the early announcement of upcoming Criterion blu disks, makes the waiting seem much longer. I think Walkabout is now the only one unreleased from that batch.

Yeah, the initial list was:

The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear
Contempt is coming -- just not from Criterion -- and Walkabout remains in limbo.

Yeah, it's actually not the waiting that bothers me as much as the anxiety born of the Ran and The Third Man debacles. -pray-

They did confirm that it's still coming on their Facebook page, but no concrete details were given. Interestingly, Walkabout is available as a Netflix Instant Streaming film right now. Haven't seen the quality -- or whether it's even anamorphic -- but it's there.

I say this a lot but...damn, it was good to get The Third Man when it was going OOP for Blu. One of the best damn Blus I have.

I bet Criterion lost the rights, like 'Ran'

;)

Vivra sa vie!!!

One of my favorite movies ever, on Blu-ray too.

Thank you Criterion.

I hope Criterion continues to pick up OOP Fox Lorber releases from director's like Godard and Truffaut. A lot of those films deserve the proper treatment, and on Blu-ray too. I'm especially hoping for more Truffaut though I am incredibly pleased by the news for Vivra sa vie.

Solid Snake 01-18-10 12:13 AM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Yeah, we need more Truffaut. With directors like him Criterion would totally give the films the respect they warrant. Still can't believe CC lost the rights to Ran though...wtf, CC?

I don't know what the Fox Lorber rights picture looks like, but what I wouldn't give for some Criterion Wertmuller and Itami discs!

I think after The 400 Blows I got all the Truffaut I need. :)

Well, it might not have been their call to make. I'd imagine they were licensed the title by StudioCanal for a certain period of time, Criterion assumed they'd be able to re-up, and...well, it turned out they were wrong.

StudioCanal also controls The Third Man and Contempt, and maybe it's not a coincidence that the former went out of print not too terribly long after we learned that Criterion no longer held the rights to release Ran and the latter never materialized. Maybe StudioCanal is getting better terms from Lionsgate, or some of these more prestigous titles were a condition of the deal with Lionsgate...?

No Jules et Jim? :(

Also....uhm...considering how CC lost Ran, Third Man, and whatnot...I worry when Amazon no longer has a certain CC release. So....8 1/2 Blu-Ray is not available from Amazon atm. Are they just out or did something happen that we should know about?

WAIT: Amazon has this on that page...

Item Under Review

While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here. (Thanks for the tip!)

We're working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.
So....what's THAT all about?

No one knows what the problem with 8 1/2 BD is?

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

the bluray.com review for 'Ran' is not very flattering - one wonders what the image and audio would have been if Criterion had releaed their version and not Studio Canals via Lionsgate.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Since the Criterion's Ran dvd (upscaled) looks better than Lionsgate's blu-ray, it's a safe bet Criterion's blu-ray would look world's better.
