Prices for the replacement cases for Canadians is the same as the US. I just ordered all nine, but they told me Bottle Rocket is currently the only one on back order.

Bigger than Life on Blu?? Great news. I'm pleased to see the extras are different from the BFI disc. Days of Heaven should look wonderful.

I am so pumped about the Kurosawa releases on BD, especially on his birthday. I'll also pick up the Eclipse sets as well.

LionsGate has the rights, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

My thoughts, as well. I've watched my BFI copy six times since acquiring it from someone on the Criterion forum a few months ago, and it's become an absolute favorite. I'm content to wait for a while to get it on Blu-ray (especially since I'm in the process of selling my PS3 and all my BRs) but it's nice to know I'll eventually be looking at a fresh batch of a features when I can afford to be buying movies again some day.

Very nice.

I love that subtitles look so much better on Blu-ray.

What's up with Ché's different aspect ratios for part 1 and part 2? Was that how they were released in the theaters?

According to IMDB, part one is 2.35 and part two is 1.78

You shouldn't have a problem. I imagine there will be some curiosity generated in the original as a result of that dumb movie that's coming out.

Ha, some of my family members were raving about "Nine" over the holidays. I told them to check out the superior 8 1/2 but I doubt they will.

I actually saw Nine today, and I thought it was excellent... to each their own. It was a pleasant surprise.

Why?

Am I the only person who keeps the DVD after I get the blu-ray version?

I mean, I can play the dvd in a bunch more places that I can't play the blu-ray - it's nice to have that option on your favorite films. That, and Criterion always gimps the inserts for the blu-rays for some reason.

there's a few Criterion blu's reviewed in the latest issue of Widescreen Review and being as critical as they are, their impessions of the discs were disappointing to say the least - I'm not sure what the problem is, if the Criteion transfer is to blame, or if the print original condition failed to impress:

Title / PQ-AQ rating (out of five):

Repulsion: 3/2

Playtime 3.5/2 & 2.5 for the PCM track (this was one bluray I had really hoped Criterion had transferred an actual 65mm print instead a 35 reduction interpositive)

Kagemusha: 3.5/3

Wages of Fear 1.5/1.5

Monsoon Wedding 3/3.5

Howard's End: 4.5/3

Wings of Desire 4/3

A Christmas Tale 5/3.5

Gomorrah: 2.5/2

Gimme Shelter 2/2

Pierrot le fou 4/2

Last Year at Marienbad 3.5/2

I absolutely don't agree with many of those scores. The heavy edge enhancement in 8 1/2 is a definite disappointment, though.

The U.S. release apparently has some aliasing and audio issues on A Matter of Loaf and Death.

WSR's disc reviews have always been based on an "eye candy" and "ear candy" scale. Movies are automatically deducted points for being in black & white, or having mono audio. Any hint of film grain also loses points.

I really hate that side effect of Blu-ray. It's like those guys on HTF that all orgasm over Crank.

Yeah, sloppily standards converted from 1080i50. The UK release is the one to get assuming you are 50hz capable.

what exactly does that mean - why are certain Euro blurays encoded as such??

I got my copy of 8 1/2 today (looks fantastic, by the way), only to find a security sticker on the top of the disc itself. Unfortunately I didn't notice until after I had put it in my PS3 and it started making horrible sounds. It seems to be working fine now, thankfully, but how does something like that even happen?

Using the same masters as for broadcast overseas, I'd assume. I seem to remember hearing that's why some of Alliance's Canadian releases are 1080i too.
