I know it's just a hypothetical, but that's not really possible with some of the packaging that studios choose, such as digibooks (which I actually like).

Darn, you're right. We'd have to redesign those entirely ;)

I like digibooks too, but can see them becoming a problem for people who have kids, or messy adults, or who lend their movies out to others.

Uniformity? I like individuality for my releases. Even though it's easier for me to sort, I appreciate Criterion and their creative packaging.

I just received an email from them concerning the replacement cases I ordered. Here is the part of it that would matter to all of you guys:

Please note that we are out of stock on all cases and expect more to arrive within the next two weeks. As soon as we receive more cases, we will ship them out through First Class/Priority USPS Postal Service, so you should expect to receive your order within 3-5 weeks from now. You will receive a confirmation e-mail when your order ships.

Instead of paying for replacement cases, I just pawned off my digi-packs and replaced them (or will) during the B&N sales....pretty easy to at least break even on Criterion Blus.

My impression was that Criterion deliberately moved away from the digipaks due to customer complaints and trying to conform to the keepcase standard, etc. Now this thing just looks really weird and out of place among the rest of my Criterions. It's a minor quibble, but a major annoyance for OCD retards like myself :)

Actually, the By Brakhage packaging is completely consistent with the way they've been packaging their films for quite some time since at least spine 185. Anything with a somewhat thick booklet or book has been released in digipaks surrounded by a slipcase. The problem with the early blu releases was that there was no slipcase or book. It just seemed like a cheap way to package their blu-rays. I'm sure the Seven Samurai and Breathless Blu's will also be in digipaks because of their fairly large booklets.

As a Criterion veteran, you should know that new releases are announced on the second Friday of every month.

I could have sworn we have had announcements, even one just a few months back announced the first week of the month.

Maybe he's referring to the titles that Amazon leaked, like The Thin Red Line.

Can't believe I'll be adding my second Criterion title to my collection of 200+ Blu-ray's this year - Videdrome. Hope it's as good the DVD copy.

Once again, Criterion tweaks the color scheme. Looks like a relatively minor quibble though.

From The Criterion Cast:

Exciting news from the rumor mill! A trusted source buried deep in the business tells me that we should expect another box set this holiday season from the Criterion Collection.

This is still a rumor, and after digging around on the CriterionForum, it’s one that has been kicking around since at least last year, so keep that in mind. I’m told that Criterion has just recently acquired the rights to several films from the producing duo: Bert Schneider (producer of Hearts and Minds and Days of Heaven) and Bob Rafelson, specifically Easy Rider and The Last Picture Show. With the recent passing of Dennis Hopper, it’ll be great to have him in one more film in the Collection.

This will most likely be a box set (5-7 films) from the New Hollywood era, produced by Schneider & Rafelson, so it’s safe to assume that Five Easy Pieces will most likely be a part of this set.

Some other tidbits that I was able to pry out of this rumor:

* The box set (again, 5-7 films) will be released around November for a Holiday release (similar to Criterion’s mega Kurosawa set last winter)
* The films will definitely be a Criterion release (not Eclipse) as there will be lots of supplemental materials included.
* There will be a Blu-ray and DVD version of the set.
* The films will not be available individually, only as the set.

So again, this is all just a rumor, but a very exciting rumor at that. With this release, Criterion is proving yet again, that collectible physical media is an important part of our modern culture, especially in terms of film appreciation.
And from the Criterion Forum:

I confirmed the rumor about the New Hollywood boxset with an individual I know who works at Criterion. They were surprised that the Criterion Cast website was able to leak the story as Criterion has been keeping the set a well guarded secret. The set includes the films Five Easy Pieces/ Head/ King of Marvin Gardens/ The Last Picture Show/ Easy Rider/ A Safe Place/ Drive, He Said

Wonder if they will use the current Sony master of Easy Rider?

Hopefully they'll ditch the useless Hopper commentary track and get Lee Hill (author of the BFI Easy Rider monograph) or another critic/historian to record a new one.

There are so many dead spots I forgot I was watching a commentary track most of the time, and he doesn't say anything that isn't covered in the documentary. I would imagine Criterion would be creating exclusive content either way.

Five Easy Pieces in Blu-ray. Very nice.

I wonder if Criterion will become a major producer of classic (1970's and older) on Blu-ray because the studios are somewhat only interested in releasing newer films.

I was a bit surprised to see this become a Criterion release, as Sony has been doing quite a lot of catalog work recently. I'm obviously not complaining though, as Criterion will certainly give us a superior product.

Sony already released Easy Rider in a 40th Anniversary digibook. I wonder why they'd allow Criterion to put it in their box set.

I'd love to get The Last Picture Show and Five Easy Pieces... but there's no way I'm getting the whole set just to get those two movies.

I have to believe (hoping) they'll release them seperately later.

As far as I know, Faces, Killing of a Chinese Bookie and A Woman Under the Influence are the only box set titles that Criterion has subsequently given individual releases to, and those didn't appear until five years later.

Just got a copy of the Criterion Stagecoach from Netflix, and it won't play on my Sony BDP-S350. Looks like a brand new disc, too. Anybody else having playback problems with this one?

One poster on the Criterion Forum reported playback issues:

Anyone else having problems with this Blu-ray? It just whiiiiiiirrrrrrsssss in my player and won't load. No other Blu-rays have the same effect in my Sherwood 5004

I had no issues with feature playback on the PS3, but I did have some menu issues with the supplements section.

Not sure if was a Java issue or just a load hiccup, but a couple of times going up and down through the menu it would skip (not highlight) every other extra.

Ejecting and re-loading the disc seemed to clear it, but I've never had any issue like that on any BD I've owned or rented.

I did the eject and reload thing too, and it just says loading for a long time then says the disc is unplayable.

I know I'm at least one firmware version behind, so I'll try updating that tomorrow.

I was trying to remember if there were any other releases but Criterion hasn't broken up too many box sets.

I don't mind springing for the set. I don't believe Drive, He Said has ever been released on DVD. I had to look up Head... Seriously, a Monkees movie in the Criterion Collection?
