Well, not if you're using something other than a PSP.

I thought it only worked on upcoming Sony titles that will include the PSP version on the disc. So the Fox version is probably better since it works with Windows and iPod a much larger group of hardware.

Depending how the file converts itself, it should be a .MP4, which would work on a iPod (or PSP). Unless it streams it via wireless connection.

I like the Fox method because it at least saves you the time of having to encode it.

I like the Lionsgate method the best, since it isn't using up space on the disc. Then again, I may be biased because I have no interest in watching a movie I have in HD on a portable device.

Is the Sony method actually transcoding the BD movie, or copying over a separate version?

350MB - 500MB on a 25GB or 50GB disc is a drop in the bucket regarding space on a disc.

Is it really that low? I was thinking it was more like 1.5GB.

If this streams to the PSP and works with all Blu-rays, then the feature is beyond awesome... Probably too good to be true.

Wasn't there a price drop after Christmas as well? The PS3 is now at a palatable price point which should definitely help sales.

I agree. This type of interaction between the devices is very cool.

I'm pretty sure it is simply copying over a PSP version on the disc. I'm trying to find the original article I read about this from CES.

Yes, it really is that low. Quality of those files in the 350-500MB range is excellent (obviously depending upon the PQ of the device playing it)

The screen is only a couple inches big so the picture doesn't have to scale to a screen that is much larger. A 300MB encode of most movies would be more than adequate for a screen as small as the PSP's, I'd imagine.

right, 480 x 272 won't take too much space

The Family Guy episode was not very big when I transfered it over. These are low quality copies.

Update: There's a rumor that Sony's portable copy would transcode any Blu-ray film into a PSP version. That's not how we understand it. The firmware update would just allow the PS3 to "see" the portable copy already burned into some Blu-ray discs and then make it available for transfer to your PSP. Think Digital Copy for Sony's gear, not Apple's.

So this won't be a feature of the hardware, but of the hardware AND software. Still pretty cool, IMO.

I just bought a bigger PSP memory card. I'm ready for some downloadable movies.

Pirates 3 had been in the top 10 for quite some time. This may be the first time it's out. 3 Fox titles in the top 10.

Here and I actually BOUGHT Pirates 3 last week! Apparently I'm in the minority.

I wonder if we will get sales numbers. No Country is #1, but may have only sold 20k copies...meaning ID4 could have only sold a little more then 2k copies. Sad thing is I think we only see sales numbers if there big...like 60k big.

Turns out it's a good thing I was so dubious.

SCEA contacted us today to let us know we were right to doubt, the Playstation 3's firmware 2.20 update will not include Portable Copy support, despite reports to the contrary.

Too bad, I'm about to go away on a trip for a few days and was thinking I might be able to bring some movies with me. Of course, I'm also still confused about whether all Blu-ray movies will be copyable or if it will be only for movies that have an extra PSP file included on the disc.

I wonder if Target carrying ID4 and I, Robot helped these numbers anyway. They had them out front with all the other new day and date titles by me.

Might have. I visited 3 Best Buys last week and between them, they had a combined total of 1 copy of I, Robot and 0 of ID4. I had made a couple of trips, so I don't think they had any to sell. Target of all places had multiple copies of both titles. All of the Best Buy stores here are the larger type with a big BD section, so I was surprised they slacked on these.
