General Blu-ray News and Discussion - Part 6

Looks like Part 5 is locked, let's see what happens this time.:D

You might notice that the Blu-ray discussion is on its sixth thread, while the HD DVD discussion is only on its second. The overwhelming reason for this is because a tiny handful of particularly determined posters are hellbent on diminishing every piece of Blu-ray news, no matter how innocuous it may be.

This is thread is intended for news and discussion about Blu-ray. Criticism of the format and studios is acceptable and encouraged, but that doesn't give you carte blanche to post that "this is why your Blu-ray update doesn't matter" or blindly defending HD DVD. There are no more "...versus..." threads here, and those users who continually attempt to use this thread to that end will be suspended.

We've been overly lenient towards some obnoxious users up to this point, but the derailment at the end of the earlier thread will not happen again.

If you're not interested in Blu-ray -- and I don't care if you have a player or not -- stay away from this thread.

Seriously can we keep this thread on Blu-ray and not on dvd, downloads, and waxing philosophical of how Blu-ray will be a failure. I'd like to find out more about new releases but the last 4 or 5 pages of the last thread was pure muck.

+1.

If anyone wants to derail this discussion or discuss something that is tangential to the current discussion, then please START A NEW THREAD. Thanks.

Especially since there's only one format now, maybe it'd be better to just break the news out into their own threads?

bunkaroo 03-02-08 10:05 PM

Sort of Blu-Ray related:

Trent Reznor has just announced a surprise immediate release of a double instrumental release called Ghost I-IV.

One of the options for purchasing is a pre-order of a Blu-Ray disc with 24/96 audio and a slideshow.

Trent rules when it comes to using technology. If the site was getting hammered so hard I'd be ordering right now.

Go to ghosts.nin.com if you can get through...

Sounds good.

There are already separate threads for:

New Release Announcements
Blu-ray Disc Players
Reviews and Recommendations

*also:

Bargains
FAQ
among other threads

So what should we be talking about then? Hopefully this is fair game:

I hear Sony is out to double their Blu-ray production from last year to about 100 titles in 2008. I like the sound of that since they have only released about 93 titles in the first two years combined. I hope it means Starship Troopers is going to see a US release that outdoes the international release. I heard it wasn't bad, but I'm waiting out the US release and there's a chance it will have better special features on it. I'm also thinking Ghostbusters (and part 2?) are part of that figure. Can't wait! How about Jerry Maguire while you're at it, Sony?

I was surprised to read they've only released 93 titles. Even if a third of the proposed slate for 2008 is day and date, that's still plenty of catalog titles.

Here's hoping Leon gets released this year.

I think Ghost Buster was already somewhat confirmed several months ago?

I'm trying to order it now. The Blu-ray only comes with the $75 deluxe edition or the $300 limited edition. I like NIN enough to pay $75 for everything that comes in that edition. It doesn't ship until May, but I'll let you guys know how it is once it arrives.

For now I went with $10 for the double CD. Trying to download the FLAC version now - quit at 82% the first time. :(

Rate seems to have picked up though.

Supermallet 03-03-08 01:16 AM

I got through and ordered the $75 version. Downloading the MP3, because 320 is good enough for anything but my home theater, and I'm going to wait for the Blu-ray to play it in my HT.

dman988 03-03-08 01:48 AM

AH, the site really isn't working for me. So annoying.

I think I'll get the $10 version. I'm a huge NIN fan and probably should get the deluxe edition, but I have better things to spend that sixty five bucks on this month. :/
Still, this album rocks (from what I've listened to).

Good question. They certainly own the 2006 Casino Royale. Would love to replace my original Bond sets for Blu-ray versions if they were really cleaned up well!

MGM (Fox) released the most recent James Bond boxs ets.

PixyJunket 03-03-08 10:38 AM

As a former NIN fan, I might actually be able to stomach an instrumental album.

PopcornTreeCt 03-03-08 01:39 PM

Glad to hear about Sony. I think titles like Ghostbusters, Leon, Jerry Maguire are definite choices.

With Ghostbusters 3 being green lit, I imagine these would be available around the release date.

candyrocket786 03-03-08 02:19 PM

Not sure if it's news, but my local Frys has started to stock the 40gb PS3s w/o Spidey 3.

Men in Black was showcased at CES. Starship Troopers is another title that I believe will be headed to BD in '08 from Sony. We need more sci-fi titles.

tonymontana313 03-03-08 02:49 PM

I'm sure we will also see Bad Boys 1 and 2 on BD this year as well. More importantly, if Sony can get Lawrence of Arabia out this year, that would be huge.

XavierMike 03-03-08 03:23 PM

^^^Wasn't Lawrence mentioned as an '09 title recently?

But isn't it a videogame only? Or did I miss an article that they were going to make a movie? Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing them on BD.

Err, I thought it was a CGI movie with all the original actors voices (including Murray)
