Re: Blue Underground and Synapse Films to release on Blu-ray

at people still complaining.

Synapse is offering all titles, with the exception of pre-orders, at 50% off MSRP. What does the internet do? Still bitch and moan that Demons and Demons 2 are to remain limited editions.

Synapse doesn't owe us anything. This was a great gesture on their part. Save the bitching and moaning until the discs actually come out. They've already announced they've sold 1,000+ copies of each. I expect these discs to sell out before June ends.

True that they don't owe us anything but they ARE asking for something from us. I thought that the idea of a forum was a place to converse. Part of conversing is bitching and moaning. MY biggest complaint with the whole debacle is the shipping charges. A minor issue in the scheme of things but it's just bugging me. I also don't understand why Synapse just can't be honest about the real reason for this "experiment". My opinion is 'it works for Twilight Time, why not us'. I would have more respect for them if they would admit what we already know. That being said, I'll be ordering...

The reasoning, as already mentioned, has been licensing costs. Synapse is "testing this model" to cover their ass so they can at least break even with licensing both films and distributing the content. This experience nets them at least $300K, but who knows how much of that is a profit. For all we know, it might be next-to-nothing.

Italian film companies aren't the easiest to deal and one has to play by their rules. Synapse, unlike other distributors, is known for their quality control. In this case, the two don't go hand and hand and I can see why Snypase has gone for this style of a release.

To flip it a bit, look at Anchor Bay's release of Battle Royale. Anchor Bay has more money than most distributors (as Starz and The Weinstein Company both own portions of it), but Toei was still trying to play hardball with the release despite the film being over ten years old. While the Blu-ray provides a better audio and visual experience over its Arrow counterpart, a lot of the bonus materials were missing as Toei wanted them on a region-locked DVD. For starters, North America still hasn't seen a legal release of the 3D edition of Battle Royale, nearly an hour of bonus material, the extended cut of Battle Royale II, and all of the sequel's respective bonus material. I'm sure we would've if Anchor Bay was willing to spruce for a more expensive release, but that wouldn't have moved units in a retail setting.

Speaking of retail settings, other than indepedent stores and Fry's, has anyone actually seen a Synapse release sitting in a Best Buy recently?

WOW! Anyone idea when these 2 Maniac Cop movies are releasing? I can't wait. Exterminator 2 would be nice too at some point.

Re: Blue Underground and Synapse Films to release on Blu-ray

DiabolikDVD got their copies of Street Trash on Blu-Ray early. 32 copies as of right now. Picked up a copy for myself.

$22.99 shipped if you are just ordering that.

Hands of the Ripper turned out decently. It does not have drastic changes to the color timing like some other recent Hammer BDs, but it also lags in terms of actual film restoration to them.

The 1980 classic PROM NIGHT? Been waiting for a decent release of that one forever. The DVD versions are hideous - either P&S or PAL to NTSC transfers. So, it'll be fabulous to have it in 24p and hidef!

I'm assuming that this would be the Blu-Ray that the backers of the Kickstarter for this (such as myself) will be getting...

From their facebook:
Time for some more news! The Kickstarter backers who donated $50 or above, the DVD or Blu-ray (depending on what you selected) you get will be the Synapse Films edition!

Fantastic news. Long Weekend has been in my personal horror top 10 ever since I saw it on VHS in the mid 90's. The DVD looks spectacular, so I can imagine how great it'll look on Blu. I'd love to see Synapse get Australia's other best horror film, Next of Kin, in the future.
