Sweet! Who knew we would get all the Maniac Cop films on Blu-Ray (eventually)?

Blue Underground typically does a decent job with the movies they release on Blu-ray, but some of their choices for release are questionable.

I have a question, and hopefully this isn't too off topic - if you found the picture quality to be so stellar, why did you only rate it three and a half stars? I hope this doesn't sound like I'm calling your reviewing skills in to question (I thought it was a great review!), I just think it's interesting how people rate things and I was curious as to what your system was like for that.

Re: Blue Underground and Synapse Films to release on Blu-ray

I try to score my reviews with a balance between the objective ("is this a technically strong presentation of this film, taking any limitations into account?") and the subjective ("how impressive does it look on an HDTV?"). Snuff looks terrific considering it's based on a release print, and previous releases have been pretty thoroughly terrible. Taken on its own, it's not going to knock anyone's socks off, though. I figured 3.5 stars reflects both sides of things.

Re: Blue Underground and Synapse Films to release on Blu-ray

Great news from Synapse!

SYNAPSE FILMS, INC. LICENSES “SUSPIRIA”, ONE OF THE MOST ACCLAIMED HORROR FILMS OF ALL TIME, FOR DVD, BLU-RAY AND FUTURE OPTICAL MEDIA.

ROMULUS, MI – Synapse Films, Inc. has acquired the North American home-video rights to the 1977 classic horror film SUSPIRIA, directed by Italian horror master Dario Argento. Described as “one of the scariest films of all time” by Entertainment Weekly, SUSPIRIA stars the beautiful Jessica Harper as a young girl caught up in a coven of witches controlling a German dance academy.

“I’ve been involved in the restoration and release of many films in my career, but SUSPIRIA has always eluded me, until now,” says Donald May, Jr., President of Synapse Films. “It’s one of my favorite horror films and I’m ecstatic that my business partner, Jerry Chandler, was able to negotiate with the rights holders to release this film. This is going to be an amazing project for us.”

Synapse Films, Inc. will work closely with Technicolor Rome and Technicolor Los Angeles to create an all-new high-definition 2K scan from the original negative for a possible 2014-15 video release. “It’s important to spend as much time as possible to create the definitive high-definition home video version for the fans,” May explains. “We’re going to take our time with this one.”

Synapse Films, Inc. is currently planning the extensive work on SUSPIRIA in conjunction with Technicolor, utilizing both their Rome and Hollywood facilities. The film scanning will be coordinated and supervised by Technicolor Hollywood’s Director of Restoration Services, Tom Burton, whose film restoration credits include Ridley Scott’s BLADE RUNNER, Georges Méliès’ A TRIP TO THE MOON and BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S.

Final specifications, retail pricing, and extras for the Synapse Films release of SUSPIRIA will be announced closer to the as yet to be determined release date.

Even if they do, I'll buy it. I know they will deliver a beautiful transfer for that film.

I did get Maniac Cop 2 and Maniac Cop 3 for review, so we'll see how those go. I never did get the first one and haven't seen the Blu-ray.

Suspiria screams out for a 4K transfer not a 2K one.

I just got to see it in 35mm and it look fantastic. I'd love to get a good transfer on Blu-ray.

Re: Blue Underground and Synapse Films to release on Blu-ray

Please, let's get SUSPIRIA right this time, Synapse! There have been three mediocre Blu releases so far. They all get some things right, and many other things wrong in their transfers. The most accurate picture timing seems to be on the Japanese import, but it is an Interlaced (1080i) transfer!

For the love of our money, give us the original color timing, please! No mucking / "updating" / modernizing. Let us see it in its original glory.

They will.

There's not a label the world over I'd trust with Suspiria more than Synapse.

Finally, Suspiria is in good hands. Prices be damned, I trust Don May more than anyone else in the game to make this thing pop and dazzle like it should.

The work that man did on Street Trash blew my fucking mind. It looked like it was filmed yesterday.

If you are familiar with the work Don May Jr. has done for other companies and his own (Synapse Films), your fears should already be at ease.

This is the same man who delayed the release of 'Street Trash' because it had imperfections in the transfer that he was not happy with. The man is a perfectionist and we love him for it.

Re: Blue Underground and Synapse Films to release on Blu-ray

Yes, I'm familiar with Don May and Synapse going all the way back to the LD days. And, I bought STREET TRASH, and it is one of the best technical encodes for a low-budget catalog film I've ever seen. So, yes I trust Synapse probably more than any other company to do SUSPIRIA right. But, what will the master that they receive be like? They can only work with what they get. Hopefully, it's an original 35-mm negative.

According to the press release, they're working with both the LA and Rome branches of Technicolor to do a new scan of the negative.
