to the announcement, but to another pointless combo release. Can't we just be done with DVD already?

Instantly at the top of my most wanted list! But agree that the DVD is completely pointless. I would rather have a digital copy over a crappy DVD.

Don has already explained that it's the only feasible way to release them from a financial standpoint.

That does make sense, as boutique labels really can't afford to put out separate releases for Blu-rays and DVDs these days. I just wish they'd drop the DVDs altogether, but obviously we're a few years away from that. The price point is the same, so I can't really complain. If anything, it's an issue of space - every inch counts, and one of the things I love about Blu-rays (pretty far down on the list, but on there regardless) is how slim they are.

The majority of two-disc sets are in a case the same width as a single disc, though.

Don sez:

As of this moment we have absolutely no plans to release these as separate releases in the future. Let's face it folks, whether we like it or not, the future IS Blu. Either that or VOD... DVD sales are in the toilet for us. We decided to try something new.

We could've JUST released it on Blu, and we did think of that, but we decided not to. Giving the customer both in one package (at a fair price) is a great way to present this title and the brick and mortars will pay more attention to it if we offer both in one package, too. We're gonna see how this does at an introductory $29.95. Obviously, if it doesn't work, we'll be rethinking our pricing in the future. You get the best of both worlds... couldn't have said it better myself.
From the sound of things, it's not a "pointless combo release" because there is no DVD-only set. If you want the DVD, you get the Blu-ray too. If you want the Blu-ray, you get the DVD. That's something a lot of people here have been arguing in favor of for a while. They may not be moving a lot of DVDs, but going Blu-ray only means they're selling that fewer discs. It's an experiment. Let's see how it shakes out. It's not priced any higher than a regular BD would've been, looking at the usual boutique BD prices, so at worst, you have a free disc you won't watch.

That's good to hear. The only dual-format titles I have are BFI and Disney releases, and all are in wider cases.

TWINS OF EVIL and HANDS OF THE RIPPER will be announced in the coming months for release some time in 2011.

Also the TV series Hammer House of Horror, though I believe Synapse said they were going to wait and see how Vampire Circus fared before deciding if the other three releases would be HD or not. So buy it!

Re: Blue Underground and Synapse Films to release on Blu-ray

YES! Finally, I'll get to add this long-missing title to my collection. I love the fact that it will be a combo pack. Not yet having an HDTV, I had made the decision to try and stop buying DVDs anyway in favor of Blus as it just seemed pointless to continue on in that vein (except for some things which may be a long way off, like Lugosi and Karloff collections). Now I can at least watch it right away and still have the upgrade.

Re: Blue Underground and Synapse Films to release on Blu-ray

So, Twins of Terror and Hands of the Ripper are still undecided for blu-ray?

I hope Vampire Circus sells well. It's a day one purchase for me, very pleased to see Hammer Horror get the blu-ray treatment.

I've never seen Vampire Circus, but I'll buy it simply to support future BD releases from Synapse.

Yeah, I think Synapse wants to see how this experiment shakes out first.

I've never seen it either, but in a posting I was working on to announce this, I found the trailer and it looks fantastic!

Love the Catholic Bishop's quote! Probably not a film I'd be particularly interested in though.

As far as we know, that's still the case, but:

BU alluded to a possible release of SUSPIRIA on their YouTube acct's trailer of the movie. Someone made a comment about them releasing it on blu and they wrote something like "you never know..." Perhaps the Weinsteins gave up the rights when they ran into financial trouble.
