Blu-ray Disc Player Thread

I'm thinking about selling my PS3 since there are no games I want for it and it's the worst possible DVD/Blu-Ray player because the thing sounds like an active airport and it's absolutely maddening trying to watch a movie with that thing roaring over everything.
Is it still considered the best BR player or are there good $200/$300 players now?

I just got the LG BD300 and so far I really like it. I have a PS3 already, and I think the BD300 loads way faster then the PS3 does. Also the streaming netflix stuff is really nice to have and the quality is pretty good.
I got sick of the PS3 not being able to play PAL DVDs, and I know it won't ever be able to. I see that there are sellers on Ebay with all region versions of the BD300. I want to unlock mine but I can't find out the code to do it. Does anyone here know how its done?

I love my S350 but I found that I had to keep my old Sony Upconverter hooked up for my DVD+R's and even SD DVD's.
The FF is just so choppy and not nearly as fast as on the older DVD player. Some of the DVD+Rs that work fine in the old player will not work at all in the S350 either.

I got in on the Amex Wishlist (Amazon deal), so I feel myself diving into Blu-ray with the BD55k, coupled with the $100 off promo and 4 films but dang do some of them look unappealing (for Blu).

Can anybody with the S350 or S550 note if they're noisy or not? Since that's kind of the main reason I want to change players, I just want to make sure whatever I go to goes back to what I've grown to expect from every DVD player I've ever owned before the PS3.

I have a PS3 and tested a Sony S350 before setting it up at my parents. The S350 is definitely quieter. I didn't notice any noise from it.

Does your PS3 work on your normal TV? If so, the answer would be Yes. It may not look as good as it should, but it will work.

I recently got the S350. I played Transformers on BD. I had a difficult time accessing the BD-Live feature. Reading the manual says that I have to attach an external memory for it to work.
Q1: Is that always necessary every time I want to use BD-Live?
I also noticed that the loading time increased to an unacceptable length when I connected an external drive (2GB USB drive).
Q2: Will the load time always be that long whenever an external drive is attached?
Q3: Should I just leave it attached all the time?
Thanks!

So, quick and simple question:
Sony BDP-S350 or Panasonic DMP-BD35K?
HHGregg has them on sale for $250 and $197 respectively. The Panny also comes with a mail-in for 2 free movie offer. The player will be going into a non theater setup. So HDTV only, no stereo. Which is the one to get?

That's what I was leaning towards just thought I'd check with with the DVDtalk consultants.

I'd personally go with the Sony. Panasonic is too cheap looking (A3ish) for me and the remote is not backlit on either model.
IIRC, the Panasonics do not have a subtitle button...so that may be a big deal for some (Grubert)

Keep it coming. Those factors aren't that big of a deal though. This is going to be a gift for my brother, basically Joe Sixpack. He hates movies he has to read (yes, sad, but what can you do? They aren't for everybody), and the machine will never be hooked to a stereo (wife's orders). So basically it comes down to pic quality and upconverting abilities.
So it sounds like either is a decent option from reviews I've seen, but the sale price + free movies win out on the Panny.

^The reports I have read suggest that the Sony S350/550 players don't have a slow motion/frame-by-frame advance feature but that the Panasonics do.
Unless it has been changed by a firmware update, the Sony S35 can't decode DTS-HD MA for output as PCM over HDMI to compatible receivers. It can bitstream both lossless codecs to HT receivers that have Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA decoding capability. The Panny BD35 can decode both lossless codecs for output as PCM over HDMI.
The Sony S550 and Panny BD55 can decode both lossless codecs and output them as PCM over HDMI or 7.1 channel analog. The Panny has somewhat better speaker controls (needed when using analog with most receivers).
Also, the Panny BD55 is one of the few players capable of handling Divx discs, for those who care about such things.
Both the Sony and Panasonic players have received good reviews. You probably won't go wrong with any of the bunch.
