Blu-ray Disc Player Thread

Discussions about the various Blu-ray Disc players have been scattered in several threads. Since I am in the market for a BD player, I'd like to assemble what information I can about the various choices, both present and future.

My preference would be to stick to Profile 1.1 and Profile 2.0 players. The Profile 1.0 machines are pretty well known to most of us.

Please point out additions or errors. Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge, ALL of the players below are capable of outputting a 1080p/24 video signal. [However, please be aware that many displays that accept a 1080/24 input convert it to 1080/60 using 3:2 pulldown, which is the same thing as having the player do it. Displays that genuinely accept and use a native 1080/24 signal at some multiple of 24 (48, 72, 96, or 120 Hz) without first converting to 1080/60 are less common.]

Current model Blu-ray Disc players:

Sony Playstation 3 Slim
[Note: the PS3 “Slim” model is said to be capable of 3D with a firmware update but since it doesn’t have HDMI 1.4 it seems unlikely that it will be able to provide 1080p to both eyes.]
• Currently available, MSRP $370
• Built-in WiFi
• Profile 2.0
• No Analog 5.1 or 7.1 channel audio output
• Onboard decoding of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio for output as PCM over HDMI
• No bitstreaming of Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio over HDMI to capable receivers

Sony BDP-S370 Blu-ray Disc player
Access to the Bravia Internet Video platform, which includes Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube, Pandora, Slacker, and NPR streaming capability
Can use iPhone and iPod Touch as remotes
• Currently available; $180
• WiFi capable but requires USB dongle
• Profile 2.0
• No Analog 5.1 or 7.1 channel audio output
• Onboard decoding of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio for output over HDMI to capable receivers
• Bitstream output of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio over HDMI to capable receivers

Sony BDP-S470 3D Blu-ray Disc player
Specs say “Firmware update required (available July 2010) 3D viewing requires 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV and HDMI connection. Other 3D accessories (including 3D glasses and emitter) may also be required for 3D viewing.” There is no mention of HDMI 1.4 but Cnet reports that the output is, indeed 1.4. How that would work with HDMI 1.3 receivers is unclear but apparently it isn’t a problem.

Glossary:

Profile 1.1 (also called “Bonus View”): Allows the use of such features as “Picture-in-Picture” commentaries.

Profile 2.0 (also called “BD Live”): Has an ethernet connection for viewing features on-line.

Bitstream: Allows the digital audio signal to be sent unprocessed to an HDMI 1.3 receiver with onboard decoding of lossless codecs. Please be aware that in order to listen to commentaries, menu sounds, and the like, it is necessary to use PCM output so that the sound can be mixed in the player.

PCM, LPCM: Pulse-Code Modulation, Linear Pulse-Code Modulation. This is a digital format that can be used to transmit audio over HDMI to a digital receiver. Technically it is a digital representation of an analog signal. Some Blu-ray Discs use PCM to encode uncompressed audio tracks, but it is inefficient and takes a lot of space. Players that can decode lossless codecs can output them as PCM over HDMI to an HDMI equipped receiver or, in some cases, over multi-channel analog outputs to an older receiver with multi-channel analog inputs.

Dolby TrueHD: Lossless multi-channel audio codec from Dolby Laboratories. Optical and coax S/PDIF connections don’t have the bandwidth to carry this codec, so it requires HDMI (for either bitstream or PCM transmission to the receiver) or on-board decoding for multi-channel analog output. TrueHD is more space efficient than a PCM audio track, but otherwise identical when decoded.

DTS-HD Master Audio: Lossless multi-channel audio codec from Digital Theater System. Optical and coax S/PDIF connections don’t have the bandwidth to carry this codec, so it requires HDMI (for either bitstream or PCM transmission to the receiver) or on-board decoding for multi-channel analog output. DTS-HD MA is more space efficient than a PCM audio track, but otherwise identical when decoded.

S/PDIF: Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format. This is the legacy audio interface used to connect DVD players and Home Theater Receivers. It does not have the bandwidth for lossless audio codecs nor for uncompressed PCM audio.

Lossless: As used here, it refers to compressed audio codecs that retain all of the information of the original. When decoded, a lossless audio track is bit for bit identical to the original.

HDMI: High-Definition Multimedia Interface. This is the current interface for audio/visual connections in High Definition devices. It can accommodate high definition video signals as well as lossless audio tracks. HDMI is similar to DVI, except that the latter interface does not accommodate audio. For HDMI/DVI adapters or cables to work, the HD display must be HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) compliant.

Codec: An algorithm used to encode a particular audio or video signal.

1080p/24: Refers to a player that can output a 1080 x 1920 progressive scan video signal in 24 frames per second. This is useful if one has a display that is capable of accepting a 1080p/24 input and outputting video at a multiple of 24 Hz (usually 72 or 120 Hz). Most films are shot at 24 fps so it is believed that discs encoded at 24 fps and displayed at an even multiple of that frame rate will have an improved picture quality, thanks to the reduced processing required to convert them to 30 or 60 Hz (called 3:2 pulldown).

although the firmware has not been released yet, i believe that the PS3 is confirmed, not just assumed, to be capable of Profile 2.0 as of CES.

awesome, well laid-out summary, by the way!

Correct. Sony had a large display at CES announcing that profile 2.0 would be available soon for the PS3, although no availability date was announced.

And I agree that this is an awesome idea, and very well laid out. Maybe it could be made sticky?

BuckNaked2k 02-12-08 06:32 PM

Can the PS3 be made capable of bitstreaming unprocessed audio via HDMI with a firmware upgrade, or is there a hardware-limiting restriction?

although it's been difficult to find a definitive answer to this question, most people seem to agree that there is a hardware-limiting restriction, based on the particular HDMI 1.3 hardware used in the PS3.

Cool -- thanks very much for this, Lizard!

Maybe more useful if presented as table - with models on the vertical axis and features/prices/dates on the horizontal.

It would make comparisons a lot easier.

PhantomStranger 02-12-08 06:42 PM

The PS3 is already capable of Profile 2.0, it just hasn't been released to the public yet. It was how 2.0 features were tested and implemented like on the Saw IV disc.

Mr. Cinema 02-12-08 07:10 PM

The Panasonic DMP-BD30 can bitstream DTS HD Master Audio.

Has anyone had any experience with HD-SDI modded Blu-Ray players yet? Are we allowed to discuss this? Sorry ahead of time if the answer is no.

This chart has been in circulation at Blu-Ray.com for some time now and has great info in it. I believe Namja also linked it.*

*Release dates are in Euro standard: day/month/year.

Lizard said before that he didn't want a PS3.

Thank you. I've made the correction.

I considered turning this information into a table but it takes a lot of time to format one and my focus yesterday was on assembling the information. I'll try to get to it when I can.

Edit: I've added a table with the basic information.

I've made the correction. The Panasonic specifications for the BD30 say "DTS-HD", which is not the same thing as "DTS-HD Master Audio", so I wasn't sure.

I agree that it is a very helpful chart, which is why I included that link in my original post above. Doesn't have the Denon players though.

That's true, the PS3 doesn't meet my needs in several respects. But I led off my list with it because I am aware that it is the most popular BD player and it will soon be Profile 2.0 compliant.

I'm currently leaning toward the Panny BD50, but it seems likely to be way too expensive for me. I may have to wait a year or so until it is replaced by a newer model and try to pick one up at a clearance sale.

I find the table a lot more easy to read and use as a comparison tool. Thanks!!!!

The Panasonic BD30 is now at $430, shipped, from Amazon/Vanns.

Its $369 at Fry's if you have one nearby.

bunkaroo 02-17-08 12:35 PM

You know that's really tempting for the BD30. I was going to wait for the PS3 to decode DTS-HD MA, but if I can find the BD30 locally under $400 I might go for it.

I don't see this in the local IL add for this weekend though, and their site says $499. Maybe this is a deal just for your store?

bunkaroo 02-17-08 04:35 PM

Well so much for buying the BD30. I'm not buying into what appears to be an unfixable PCM issue with the LFE channel.

This thread is a must-read for anyone considering the BD30:

PhantomStranger 02-17-08 05:05 PM

While the LFE issue on the BD30 is very real, there are workarounds to solve the problem.

insanecollector 02-18-08 06:12 AM

thanks for this thread lizard

I'm aware of them.

I have an Onkyo 605 which I don't believe I can raise the Subwoofer channel output on - only lower it.

I've thought about it some more, and after considering how many Blu-Ray''s I have with DTS-HD (over 50), I may still get the BD30 for under $400 just for those films. I have a PS3 and BDP-S1. While I'd like to retire the BDP-S1 completely from my HT to free up space, if I have to use it for PCM movies, so be it. The bug doesn't affect bitstreamed TrueHD or DTS-HD thankfully. And of course I can always use my PS3, but since I actually use it and bought it primarily for gaming, I haven't played too many movies on it.

DAC 02-18-08 09:12 AM

So the PS3 is the cheapest BD player available, aside from others going on sale?

I think that's correct.

One of the older Samsung's might be on sale somewhere (should still be avoided though), and the BDP-S300 was going for 299.99 at a lot of places during the holidays, but is probably back up to around $350-$400 now.

The PS3 is still the best choice IMO at that price point. The Panny BD30 would be the most obvious competitor, but it's not a perfect machine.

bunkaroo 02-22-08 06:48 PM

Well some great news for the BD30. It's been confirmed multiple beta testers have new firmware that fixes the LFE issue, and Panasonic is apparently ready to release the firmware Monday. See the relevant AVS thread for more info.

I feel even better now about getting the BD30 this week for $439.
