They're still looking into it and will know more tomorrow. They say it's more complicated than the "usual Google ad." They will be looking into ways that stuff like this doesn't happen again. Sorry there's not better news, but that's the latest from IB.

Yeah, they're waiting for tomorrow because it's the offiicial release date for the dvd.

This really is ridiculous and worth every complaint posted.

Add one more vote to the complaint pile.

Also, thanks to Josh for the heads up on flashblock/adblock for Firefox. Took less than 30 seconds, and now I have no idea what ad you guys are complaining about.

As of right now, it looks like the ad is down. Hasn't stopped the in-thread ads but the most offensive one looks to be gone. I'm not using any ad-blockers.

I just experienced it in a thread, which is bad enough. I'm staying away from dvdtalk for a while, this is fucking bullshit.

Would it kill them to have one of their own fucking representatives come on and say that?

Of course, they don't want us to call them on their bullshit.

I'm one of G!'s biggest supporters but this is one of those times when Fuman and I agree on something. That kind of advertisement generates a lot of ill will and while G! might have resolved it somewhat quicker, this has happened under his watch too.

Yes, and Geoff came here and personally kept us up to date on what he was doing about it. As others have said, it's the lack of response from IB that is generating most of the ill will here. The mods/admins have been great, but the owners need to step up.

does anybody else notice that their computer slows waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy down when visiting this site?

Intrusive ads are one thing, but when my laptop fans fire up loudly after visiting this particular website for less than a minute, then something is wrong. the time left on my battery's charge shouldn't be cut in half simply for coming here, should it?

I don't know if it's this particular advertisement, but there is something going on at DVDtalk that is sucking the resources of my laptop every time i visit this site.

Doesn't slow down my PC but the site still hangs like it used too. Not as often though. So much for DVDTALK being put on reliable servers. Yep I said it Geoff, your servers sucked.

Yes, G! was "more" responsive than a corporate owner could possibly hope to be but for those who spend a ton of time here, no one could ever have been quick enough (I recall a number of times when people fussed at G! for taking too long to fix/change something they wanted done). The problem with corporate ownership is that it seems likely that any major decision needs to go through multiple hands with varying degrees of responsibility. Expecting an immediate response to the ad (especially when initial reports came in on the weekend) is not reasonable and the number of "must be a long weekend at IB" type comments forgets that changes in a contractual advertisement probably have to go through additional steps. I also think that once someone at IB noticed the issue (presumably on Monday), that was when the clock started, not when the solution could immediately be made to pull the plug.

As far as the claims that the website is running slow, I haven't noticed it but the move to the new server seems to have sped up the website overall for me. I think that reporting discontent in this thread over the advertisement, if done by a sizable enough population, will have a greater impact if people tone down the rhetoric about violating the TOS, hating the new owners, and some of the crankier comments made but I'm well acquainted with large bureaucracies and corporations so your mileage may vary.

But we do hate the new owners, faceless whoever they ares. If they were a part of the community and actually talked to us (like G!$) used to do, maybe they could be cut some slack.

This notion people keep tossing around of "Just go with the flow, be calm, IB is nice, cut them some slack, don't be angry, just take what you're given" is goofy. Some of us don't like the way things in the forum are going. Compound that with the total lack of attention from the people who own the place and you get some angry diehards who love this place and are tired of seeing it get screwed with by the giant faceless maybe-people.

The only slow downs I've noticed are usually attributed to connecting to third party server (presumably for the ads). Regarding this ad I have to say I have yet to see the whole thing. As mentioned previously long ago I started running the mouse cursor down the side of the forum because of the center place/mouse over to expand type ads and I haven't really had any problems.

So what solution are you looking for? Keep in mind I have no "in roads" to IB and have no power to implement any changes, but I'm just curious.

While Geoff would usually respond to the threads, the few threads I found with a search all had the same ultimate response (sorry that people don't like it, but the campaign is going to run to completion anyway). If someone from IB came and made a post like that it seems like it would just make people even more upset than they already are.

For the record here were the threads I checked:

"Stepping up" at this point would only serve to provide the mob with a focal point to vent against. There have already been several personnel changes with regard to people at IB associated with DT, with presumably more to come, and while I would like at least one of the people possessing some "juice" over DT to participate here in the forums, I think all such people are wearing many hats at IB (running so many websites and all). Spending a lot of time here getting beat up by those "angry diehards" isn't likely something they would relish doing while aggressively dealing with all the issues involved with running the place.

(and "goofy" or not, the majority of the DVD Talk experience is still the same, flaws and all, there just isn't a singular person to vent on as in the past)

Have you guys really noticed that big a change since IB came on the scene? I was expecting to, but I can't say that I have, honestly. And I see no reason to hate them.

This ad sucked, but I've dealt with horrible ads running through ad servers myself and it's a difficult issue to address. I understand and share people's frustrations over this ad, but honestly I don't hold it against them. I do hope they take the steps necessary to prevent this in the future as best they can, and based on the feedback they have received, my guess is that they will.

Maybe we should have them for louder movies.

Again, thanks!

P.S. Can you add a button to the ads that makes them our default home page and doesn't allow us to start browsing the internet until the ad has completed? Maybe even have a voice in the ad say something, and we have to type in what the voice said before we can proceed? That will make sure we heard it with the fantastic sound. Again, thanks!
