Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Crossover Vote - Indie/Arthouse = The Wailing
Crossover Vote - Comedy = Totally Killer

Trying to organize films for the challenge and struggling to find more than a few GOOD recent zombie movies; or rather finding a ton of especially horrible seeming zombie films (Granny of the Dead, Zombies Have Fallen, My Fair Zombie; just horrible parody fluff). It's a shame because Zombies feel like a subgenre largely neglected or fallen into camp (especially main stream) when there are still decent vampire movies (Abigail, Renfield) or serious attempts at werewolf films (Wolf Man in 2025) and even a string of solid killer insect films (Infested, Sting, etc).
Recently I enjoyed Handling the Undead, The Sadness, One Cut of the Dead, Blood Quantum, and Wyrmwood(s) so there's still hope.
Ultimately planning to watch Pet Semetary: Bloodlines, Final Cut, and Birth/Rebirth on Zombie theme day but... where is a modern brain munching undead opus that the world deserves?

Thank you, sir! Added to spot 24.

Late(r) tonight I'll give an update with all the theme counts for each subset, etc. when I get back on my own computer. I just need to update post #8 with the new suggestions.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Well, I don't know what happened but the reoccurring theme Vampires was mysteriously missing from the list. I didn't notice it. Others didn't notice it, or at least didn't say anything.

Anyway, I paired it up with zombies for the Bela 10/20 spot. In the past it was put on the same day as Werewolves, so not the first time. I snatched one of the two subsets that was part of 'tropes' to keep them at 45. So it's all good.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

The subset update...

  • It's progressing nicely. There's still 3 that have yet to give your picks.

  • 8/18 was the day subsets were completed last year, so gonna shoot for that.

  • It's time to unofficially put the kibosh on the volunteering. As always, a couple extra spots will be reserved just in case.

  • Currently I don't have to ask for more picks from anyone. If that changes I'll let you know by sending a PM.

  • And as far as trying to cover a bit of everything - In addition to what you see on the list below, we could use a few more obscure picks (something that might be a discovery for some) and some more cheesy flicks. We do have some of the latter but it needs to be spread amongst more people.

Here's the list of theme coverage for every subset. Keep in mind some of them are probably higher (especially two-word, unused & boutique), but it's impossible to cross-check them with every list. This is just to give those who have yet to provide picks (or wish to provide more) an idea of what to suggest.

1. TCM 50th - 5
2. Giallo - 6
3. Stalker - 8
4. Anthologies - 9
5. Locations - 10
6. Monsters/Creature Features - 15
7. Tropes - 9
8. Road - 14
9. POV - 9
10. Woods - 10
11. Two-Word - A lot
12. Teenage Wasteland - 22
13. Schlock-Fest (USA Up All Night) - 3
Schlock-Fest (Troma) - 2
14. Roger Corman - 5
15. Chrono (1924) - 4
Chrono (1949) - 4
Chrono (1974) - 5
Chrono (1999) - 4
16. Slasher - 44
17. Werewolves - 6
18. Joe Bob - 4
19. Video - 4
20. Boutique - 29 (considerably higher)
21. Textploitation (Suburban Grindhouse) - 1
Textploitation (John Stanley's Creature Features) - 5
Textploitation (Rue Morgue's 200 Alternate Horror Films You Need to See) - 7
22. Unused - 18 (probably considerably higher)
23. Vampires - 4
Zombies - 15
24. Passport - 14
25. Studios Centennial (Columbia Pictures) - 3
Studios Centennial (MGM) - 4
26. Tetralogy (Horror Films of the 1970s) - 6
Tetralogy (Horror Films of the 1980s) - 6
Tetralogy (Horror Films of the 1990s) - 4
Tetralogy (Horror Films of 2000-2009) - 3
27. Mashup - 14
28. Investigations - 17
29. Supernatural - 28
30. Devil's Night - 18
31. Halloween - 9

^ I think all volunteers should throw in at least one more. You know. Just to be safe.

On another note, seeing a news story this morning that next week, a local cider mill will be opening for the Fall has me thinking about watching some horror already myself.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

If we are adding more suggestions, Chad mentioned including more obscure and cheesy titles. I don't think anything is obscure with this crowd, and cheesy lies in the eye of the beholder, but here goes:

Vampires
10 Minutes to Midnight-Vudu
Countess Dracula-Tubi, Shudder, ShoutTV
Daybreakers-Tubi

Werewolves
Werewolves of the Third Reich-Tubi
An American Werewolf in Paris-Prime, Peacock, Tubi

Zombies
Better Off Zed-Tubi
Diary of the Dead-Tubi, Freevee
Cockneys vs Zombies-Prime, Freevee, Peacock, Tubi

Alternative Horror
1BR-Tubi, Amazon Prime, Peacock
28 Weeks Later -Hulu
Psychomania--Tubi, AMC+

Textploitation-Suburban Grindhouse
The Beast Within-Tubi (also fits Joe Bob)
The Being-Prime
Mausoleum-Tubi

Joe Bob
Doctor Mordrid-Prime, Tubi
Seed People-Prime, Tubi

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

I have enjoyed some of the books used in the checklist for the last couple years so I thought I would pick up some of the ones mentioned this year. I already had three of them but I was able to pick up two of them on Kindle (not my favorite way to read but much cheaper than the actual books), the Rue Morgue book on ebay and a couple of books in the library. I picked out Horror! and started to read it and I thought I would recommend it. Kim Newman is a great writer and my appreciation for his writing may have colored my opinion but his background for each decades films (through the 90's so far) has been very good. I will particularly use his background for the 1890's - 1910's as I try out some of the earliest horror films.

Thanks for mentioning these Chad as these books and the books from previous years have been very enjoyable. I already had a pretty good number of books on horror films but you have opened my eyes to many of the newer books (for me) that are available and well written. I have also been able to add a good number of these books to my library which has been great!

Speaking of truncated lists, the LB one for John Stanley's Creature Features (in the Textploitation theme) disappointingly peters out midway through the Bs. (Considering that's 200 horror movies from just the As and half the Bs, it must be a big book!) I couldn't find a complete list, and I can't stand to let that stand , so I ordered a cheap used copy of the book and should have it in a few days.
Did you manage to get this? How was it? I've noticed there are a few additional versions with 'all new reviews'. I was getting a book order together and noticed the original for cheap, and was wondering if it was worth it.

Last year I managed to find most all of the Frightfest books at Hamilton for a nice price. Ended up getting the Newman book and a vampire book by Skal.

Glad to hear it! It's my absolute favorite type of theme, and always happy to see them get more exposure. I've lined my shelves with at least 10 so far.

I've had Horror! in my saved for later cart for awhile but never pulled the trigger. I really should after enjoying as many of his commentaries that I have. And I'm fairly certain last year I tried to add it to the suggestions page after seeing it mentioned on Goodreads but couldn't find a list. Looks like this one popped up within the year, so just did.
