Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

I was looking into theatrical horror movies this October season and it seems surprisingly few especially into October itself. Maybe Smile 2 is the only studio large scale release this October. Hopefully more get added.

September 6: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, The Front Room, Red Rooms
September 13: Booger, Speak No Evil
September 20: The Substance, Strange Darling
September 27: Never Let Go, Abruptio
October 4: Monster Summer
October 11: Terrifier 3
October 18: Smile 2, Flight Risk
October 22: Catnado! Unleashed [VOD, DVD - 'thanks' WillieMLF]
October 25: Your Monster, Venom: Last Dance
October 29: The Red

It looks like a bunch of stuff is getting dumped into theaters in August probably so it can be on streaming or physical media by October.

It's there, too. I found it by switching the sort order to alphabetical. Yet another reason the new redesign is annoying is the waiting for new titles to load every time you scroll down, as opposed to having a set number per page. At least switching to grid or compact view speeds it up a bit by loading 50 more titles at a time.

And the IMDB list is the most complete at the moment. The other is missing four titles (579 vs 575).

Yep, Peeping Tom is #367 (with default sort order).

The infinite scroll thing is definitely annoying (IMDb: continuing their tradition of making things "better" by making them worse), but there are some other workarounds when looking for a particular title -- besides the aforementioned re-sorting:
  • use the filters (blue button to the left of the sort options) -- e.g., if you know the approximate year it was released
  • export (top right, below the imdb toolbar but above the list title) and open in Excel or other spreadsheet software
  • use the advanced title search and then add "&lists=ls029042594" to the end of the results URL
Exports have also gotten weirder; instead of just immediately downloading a .csv file named the same as the list name, you're redirected to an exports page where you download a .csv named with a randomized string of letters and numbers (typical UUID format, for anyone who works with databases). But whatever. Exports now include both display title and original title for movies (whereas before they only included original title), which is a rare improvement.

Supposedly they are working on adding pagination and title search when viewing large lists -- they did already re-introduce pagination when editing large lists, which is good -- but I wouldn't count on it happening anytime soon.

I know a lot of people have already submitted their subset picks, but I have been working on creating IMDb lists for the themes so that people can use the advanced search feature to exclude past subsets / highlight not-yet-used TSZDT selections. I'll try to slap together what I've got so far later today, in case it's useful for people who haven't submitted picks yet, or for general reference.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Here are a few choices! I have not seen The Cell since it came out in theaters, and I'm pretty sure it's not the easiest to find. I hate to admit that I've never seen Rocky Horror

Investigations: Jaws 2 (1978), Annihilation (2018), Constantine (2005), The Cell (2000)

Dance the Night Away: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), As Above, So Below (2014), May (2002)

Werewolf: Viking Wolf (2022), Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943), Werewolf of London (1935)

Films Shot at Windsor's Oakley Court: Nightmare (1964), Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny & Girly (1970), The Hound of the Baskervilles (1978)

Monsters: Arcadian (2023), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), The Descent: Part2 (2009)

Then maybe it's something with the Android app. When I click on the link, it comes up with 250 results. I go to the bottom, and there's no choice to go to a second page and nothing else loads. I also don't get the option to sort alphabetically. I looked for that, too. Maybe it's in the settings somewhere.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

^ Well, that sucks! Yeah, it must be the app. I don't think I've ever tried to browse/search a list on the app, so don't know if the 250-result limit is a new "feature" or an old one.

Speaking of truncated lists, the LB one for John Stanley's Creature Features (in the Textploitation theme) disappointingly peters out midway through the Bs. (Considering that's 200 horror movies from just the As and half the Bs, it must be a big book!) I couldn't find a complete list, and I can't stand to let that stand , so I ordered a cheap used copy of the book and should have it in a few days.

Yikes.

I am still going through the categories. I didn’t pick Travelogue but I don’t think the linked list isn’t really horror Travelogue, seems like a lot of just picking movies from different countries and calling it travelogue.

if you go into Letterboxd and search the basic gist of the theme, lists usually pop up

I also updated all to "include adult titles" because the IMDB occasionally lists them as adult when they're not.

The suggestions page is still a work in progress.

Wow, I didn't even notice it in the rush to get everything up. I have the (I think) second edition, and it's 12 pages shorter according to the Amazon description.

But are you absolutely sure you wanna do that? It's not organized by genre, which means you'll be encountering quite a few Sci-Fi and Fantasy films along the way. Let me know if you decide otherwise and I'll just switch it out with another book on the suggestions page.

More forthcoming, but I just got home from vacation yesterday and had an internet outage all night last night.

But for October 1, so far I have The Town That Dreaded Sundown. Either the 1976 or 2014 versions, as they are both available on Tubi. At least at the time of this writing.

For some of you Challenge maniacs out there, here is the poster for you!

Plus you may find some suggestions here (though likely most have been used before since a lot of these are pretty common).

A couple more possibilities: For Giallo, I did not see the remake of Suspiria (2018), and found it available to stream on FreeVee. For POV, I did not see Predator, which while not available for free, is on Prime Video, Hulu and Disney+. More forthcoming soon.

Flash Sale 🏅 ~Go for the gold~ with the ill-fated Olympic hopefuls of Falcon Academy: The slipcover edition of our 4K...

I meant to post this yesterday. Normally I don't reveal subsets before the official release date, but just wanted to give a heads up that this is a potential one with a very good chance of making the cut. Hamilton does have it for a similar price, albeit without the limited slip. It's also streaming on Shudder.
