Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 16: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
Do we want to put a female director in the list again? Last time we put "any" because there were so few but the numbers are growing, although they may only have one or two horror credits to their name.
I like this idea. As another option, we could do a "Pick a female director from a list" as an option. This list is a good one that includes some great flicks:

The website I used for the tropes category the last couple of years looks to be DOA and has been replaced with this link. I went ahead and filled it out, but I'll be happy to replace anything if anyone wants.
Here's what we've used in the past:

Yay for the list of female directors to pick from!
As for tropes, I like the ones you picked. The other one I like is the "kid doesn't realize it's a ghost". Just rewatched The Orphanage. Those "imaginary friends who are really evil spirits" bit is always creepy. Too bad that trope page doesn't list movies as examples. Perhaps we can share suggestions in the discussion thread once the list is final.

Speaking of female directors, has anyone seen The Nightingale yet? I hear it's pretty intense. Would it be appropriate for the challenge? I really enjoyed The Babadook.

I liked it, but I'd be hard pressed to call it "horror". Others may have a different opinion. Really nothing like The Babadook (which some also question as to it being horror, but I think it is).

I agree with Pacaway, I've heard The Nightingale be referenced as horror but personally didn't think it was. It's nothing like The Babadook except for the degree it peers into someone's psyche, but here in a less abstract more action-y thriller way. Kent has some clear themes that run through both films that make The Nightingale well worth watching and perhaps more timely than Babadook. You're free to watch/count what you think fits but I would discourage anyone from approaching The Nightingale expecting anything like Babadook.

I would change this item
Watch 3 films that you've never seen before that:
--- Was written by H.G. Wells -
HG Wells wrote science fiction and isn't known as a horror author. Someone like Richard Matheson, Robert Bloch, or Clive Barker might be better.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 16: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
I've seen it on several "best horror of 2019" lists, so I put it on my own watch list. I'm surprised people say it's not horror. But I just checked the imdb listing and it says "Adventure, Drama, Thriller". Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Some more checklist ideas...
ACTORS:
William Sadler (12 - not used before)
Watch 3 films that you've never seen before that...:
Stars a member of the Carradine family
Takes place at a boarding school
Features a Paranormal Investigator

One more checklist idea
Takes place in a crypt - on the checklist there is place for this and "takes place at a boarding school" so not stepping on tarfrimmer's suggestion.

I would like to suggest Nick Cage for actor if the list isn’t overwhelmed. I’ve been going through titles and it seems he may be my man this year.

Just to confirm, the early start does NOT count towards your total or towards the checklist correct?

I've just added links to 4 of the tropes so far. I did have to tweak a couple slightly to fit the link but nothing significant. Still working on the other three.

The dead formats category has been...

Still, a great suggestion that encouraged me to dig out my old VCR.
